"Best" rmg templates for newbies?
Hi guys
So which templates would you recommend for newbies (in online playing)... for example Balance although fun, I have the feeling it will be total disaster against more experienced players. Same reason for Jebus but mirrored as they will know how to use all those resources, and kill u before the end of the 3rd week or something Right, wrong? Anyways, is there any templates you would recommend start playing or just jump to the most common and learn on the fly?

I dont recommend balance, its a terrible template with an ironic name for how it really is. As for jebus, I dont see why not play it, there you'll learn how to chain better than other temps cause you almost always have something to work with so its goof for newbies imo but ofc its not good vs good players that breaks w2, even average players break w2 these days. Also panic is a nice temp, give it a shot.

get homm3 WT version (www.heroeswt.net) and ask good player in WT chat window for screen-sharing. There is Mikogo program which allows to do this. So you can quickly learn how to play Jebus or whatever...

For newbies? What will this template teach them? It would be like a singleplayer.
And there is the time factor. For the time they play 1 Extreme 2 game, they can play 4 balance games. And have 4 diff outcomes.
I would never recomend Extreme 2 for newbies.
Maybe Jebus not because of the money, but because the construction of the map is so simple, that a newbie can try to make some strategic decisions.

I think balance is a fine temp for noobs. Its not that complicated to play. For pros it has the problem that whoever gets to the hive area first will allmost allways win and one player can have much easier acces there than the other.
In generel I think you should play the most popular temps. Theres a reson they are the most popular. And you might aswell get started playing the tmeps you will end up playing anyway.
If you want a chance against a pro player play crips cross. Its a totally empty temp with absolutely nothing to work with.

I dont think its so tough. You have HUGE starting area. There is some gold. You can even make hydras/behemots with castle week 1.
If somebody wants economics - i would suggest 8xm8.

The big area in this case is not an advantage only here. You hardly can afford 8 heroes on E2 early. You have to get to your 2nd town as soon as possible. You do not find a trading post every often. The big area means you need a lot of time to get to all the locations needed. Gold mines are all far away and quite tough guarded.
Behemots/castle week 1 is not a good argument in my eyes, because I can't think of a template where you were NOT able to build that..
Take Tower, Dungeon or Inferno and check if you can build level 7 week 1 there.

Big area means you have resourses. And you will keep colecting them long time.
If you are saying that Extreme II is not Jebus - i will agree on 100%. But its not POOR.

How many 8xm8 have you played recently? Its not every time that you can build behemots/hydras there.

So here is my feedback on the suggested templates:
- Jebus Cross - it's a fun map, tons of resources. It would be one of the maps I would recommend for other beginners as well. Great for learning chaining heroes.
- Panic - would be my favorite map. With hard early monsters but still, with room for exploring. Problems with it it sometimes you get blocked in the castle (by level 3 Lots) and also very often the ore and wood mines are either very very far, at least week of travel or guarded by road guards and then by (upgraded) archers. Is it normal or just bad "draw"?
- Mini-Nostalgia - very chaotic, though also fun. Sadly most of the time I get ambushed...
- Extreme II - here is the problem. I walk around and explore, getting some very few resources and doing nothing. By the time I get some army the guarding monsters become even stronger,,, so do you go Castle or for 7 level... and also, you play for years. Tbh I would not recommend, as It is not fun as some of the other maps.
- Balance - very good map, even if it is very hard at start I liked it. I also recommend it as Panic and it seems it is far less "buggy" then it.
- 8xm8 - ??? couldn't find this temp anywhere. I saw 8xm12... can someone link it or upload it somewhere so I can give it a try?

Sorry for bumping old thread but it deserves it.
I personally prefer nostalgia one.
But the point is they can be even better - especially for XXL maps. Someone may improve existing ones like nostalgia or make a new one.
Question is what is procedure of creating such rmg template? (generally of course - we want many parts/numbers that can be touched )

Use TextEdit (recommended) or some spreasheet form, like Excel or Calc.
Then, just add / edit zones and connections. Some info is avaliable here, though RMG templates did not get any extensive and complete description as yet.
As to templates for beginners, I'd recommend recent Rush and, if you fancy, Guerilla. Both have smooth flow and easy guards. I also did some improvements to very old Ocean's Eleven template which make it actually playable, maybe should share it.
As to XXL maps, template needs to have parameter "Maximum size" set to 98.
