Poll Question:
Story tone, serious or not?

Having played HoMMV's campaign, I found it's story lacking, and I'm pretty certain I'm not the only one.
However having now acquired Clash of Heroes on my PS3, I'm suddenly warming up to the new setting a lot more, and I've concluded it's because it doesn't take itself to seriously.

The characters aren't very deep, but are despite that charming and make me care about them without even a word of spoken dialogue
The jokes are funny and the plot doesn't try anything special either but still drew me in.

Comparing HoMMV Ashan vs Clash of Heroes Ashan, I'd say the latter was a lot more enjoyable.

So what are your thoughts on where HoMMVI should go with this?

Also feel free to discuss the story and plot in this thread in general, we've touched upon it in various threads but it might be nice to have a dedicated one.

Responses:
HoMMVI should follow HoMMV's tone but improve (a lot)
HoMMVI should follow MM:CoH
HoMMVI should be darker, grittier
HoMMVI should follow a different game's tone (specify)
HoMMVI's story doesn't interest me at all.

Tones don't matter, HOMM V was just poorly written.

If it was gritty, it would be even more laughable, I reckon.

H2 and H3 style stories were good but no one paied any real attention to them(besides of Cepheus) but everyone remembers H4 and H3 expansion campaigns. Why? They were simply awesome with the characters and the humour. So light with good characters is where it's at.

I dare any gamewriter make a truly gritty dark story. Then we can watch the whole company get sued, boycotted and become a cult icon. Even FF VIII was censored because of the feedback from the demo and it had, like, nada gritty or dark, just some teen sex and verbal abuse.

I normally favors dark and gritty, but not when it comes to Heroes.

However I really want the story to take itself seriously. I have always hated the campaign in heroes, but this time around I actually expect something good, and hopefully it will be serious.

H5 was rather impersonal. Heroes that were either stupid or hard to connect with, story revolving around some kind of generic catastrophic event, there was little immersion value, plot holes and lack of text boxes did not help. Hell there wasn't even a pace in the campaigns in terms of length and difficulty. You didn't get to enjoy the feel of your own faction in some.

Clash of heroes had some nice little touches that helped you get into the world. It slowed down the action, allowed you to have a look, talk at the locals, see the heroes' dreams. Each story involved you.

That is what I like about H6, the protagonist of each campaign is very involved with the storyline. It should help make it more personal.

IMHO it Should be Darker and more mature!

for me personally Stroyline is a very Very important part of the game!!!
and that is the main thing that i Hated in Homm5, even though it was a good game but a poor story combined with childish graphics made me not really enjoy it!
Heroes6 so far looks very promising for me.. as Graphics are way better...
and Ubi's promises about storyline.. well i believe Dev's in this case, worried a bit though..

I'd like to care about Heroes, like i did about Illidan or Arthas in Warcraft.. Like Sandro , Gaudloth , Solmyr or Gelu in HoMM.. Heroes should be memorable, they should be important.. Who cares about Griffin eternal bullsnowtt? Agrael-Raelag-Retard-Ardret? Or Zehir? Heroes should be charismatic, and dialogues should mean something, rather then "filling the empty space"..

Sadly I didn't have the oportunity to play CoH. But would love to.
Te story in Heroes V was really bad, to many wierd plot twists and I dindt have the feeling it reali was coherent.

Some of the TOE and HOF stories were bette
Ornela Ylaia and Wulfstan were the my favorite characters.

But I did play DMMaM, and The story was not bad. Nothing geniuse but still nice.
I do hope that every game we get will be better and better in the story part.

But I have voted for a More dark story setting. I mostly prefere it ant the gray setting of the new Homam has a lot of potential for this.I hope that there will by more continents then the one we have at this time

personally...

I'm kind of torn if I'm honest. yeah, I want a more indepth story, exploring more than just straight "Good and evil" struggles, where not all demons are bad and not all angels are good (I kind of imagine an angel character as a very OCD psychotic obsessed with purity and holiness). On the other hand, the classic fantasy setting of the games is just begging for a much more comedic or surreal look at it, like in Command and Conquer 3, where everyone is at the scenery with knives and forks.

I don't think it was the tone that made the HoMMV's story so bad. I agree with Elvin that it had more to do with the badly written characters, wonky immersion and the complete lack of pacing. The voice-acting didn't help either. I'm certainly not opposed to voice-acting, but most of it sounded phoned in.

HoF was better and TotE was better still. I still love Arantir's cold calculations and Gotai's...well, Orcness.

DMoMM wasn't as bad as HoMMV was, but it was still rather bland. And as someone in the townscreen thread said, oh so unsubtle.(I still love Arantir though)

I don't mind either tone, light or dark. As long as it's written well.
And story isn't entirely composed of the dialog. Writing story for video-games is hard and that's why it's done wrong often. Listen to what the expoits of Extra Credits have to say to yous mugs. Linky
I am apprehensive of the story of HoMMVI. I'm pretty sure it will be better than V, but I fear the worst. I dread that they might have bitten off more than they can chew.

In fact, H5 vanilla's story was quite good, it's the way some key characters behaved that made the story ridiculous (especially Isabelle, Godric and Findan).

The HoF storyline was plain terrible. Bad story, poor characters (Duncan was useless, Freyda was just as annoying as Isabelle, the Dwarf King was ridiculous).

TotE's story started with an excellent story (Arantir) and a good one (the Orcs), but Zehir's mixed campaign was just a clumsy way of ending the story by trying to give all factions a role in the final map. It was just as bad as the final maps of H4TGS and H4WoW.

For H6, I hope the story will be dark and gritty and I hope the character will have some spine, not like Godric who just kept mumbling around and ended up in a prison everytime.

It was? The rise of a dead king and all factions allying against a greater threat was but a weaker version of Restoration of Erathia. Not only they copied it but they made it worse with generic flavour added for good measure. Not to mention the part where things make little sense. That story could only have worked with retarded characters in retrospect.

In general you could say that they went over the top with the H5 characters. Isabel? Too inexperienced, too stupid. Markal? Too deliciously insane and slicky. Godric? Too devoted, Griffin eternal and stuff. Zehir? Cheesy but I could roll with that. Findan? No comment. Biara? Too obviously treacherous. Wulfstan/Duncan? Has their share of cheese alright. Ylaya? Too sexy for H5 Gotai? Too stupid/aggressive. Alaric? Too blinded in his fanaticism. There was no ambiguity, everyone was exaggerated to the point you knew what the character was about the moment you met him.

Not that this matters on this stage, but anyway.
The story should be nothing like the one in Heroes V. The latter failed on all possible fronts. Painfully generic and predictable, with the greatest gathering of moronic characters I have ever seen in a computer game, maddening dialogue and no depth whatsoever. It should not be used as a base, it should not be used at all. Heroes VI is in the past and already has a good amount of plot holes but if making them even more will result in a much better story, then I'm pro.
Besides, they can always say that the story in Heroes V was some Dragon God's bad dream and never happened.

Meh, there was a reason for me not leveling up random female helpers in Heroes 5. They seemed to be so... Well anyway: Apart from Zehir, who's dry humor and back n fourth dialog with his companion feels cheesy but at least justified somehow. Other than that, characters are just black and white or sometimes orange (comic relief!... But there needs to be some tension for it to relieve, or it doesn't work.)

More than anything, I want the story not to be 100% predictable. Please. Make it organic and make it believable (within the context of the Heroes world).

Heroes V story was only good in the Necropolis campaigns. At least they were entertaining
Markal could be too insane, but at least he and Ornella had a personality, and Arantir was charismatic.
But ToE felt like they decided to create two stories completelly diferents (one more serious and one more... simple) and mix them.
I never cared about stories of heroes series untill H5 (bad choice, I know),so I'm not sure if I want something too serious or not.
But at least the idea of a brother who killed his sister because he believes she killed their father is far more interesting than anything H5 had to show. I would love if in the end it was actually Anastasya who killed her father (don't care the reason why she would do that).

Maybe the father was in league with Michael and her murdering him was something that she HAD to do to stop whatever shenanigans Michael had planned.

I dunno, but yes, the family intrigue and so far enigmatic angel plot is already setting this up for a lot more promise.

Funnily enough, after playing CoH, I'm starting to see a lot of parallels in the Griffin children from VI and the Unicorn children from CoH. (not implying anything here)
I'm hoping they'll give us some non-human (and preferably non-elven) main characters, I'd like to really crawl into the skin of something a bit more exotic for once.
Maybe cast the player as a villain again for a change, they did that in HoMMIII's campaigns repeatedly.
Alternatively maybe a unique demon of some sort that's off his usual moral beaten path.
