5 years too, in 1999, HoMM III RoE has just been localized in Russia.
Then year later I tried HoMM II at the first time.

8. Been playing ever since the release. Do you remember when you were unable to activate an adventure map object by pressing space? And when native terrains were not yet a factor, as much as now at least, oh man those were the days... Just give me some dragons and let me play as Solmyr.
Lol. Nostalgia.

I was in college. HOMM was a demo on some shareware CD (PC Gamer, I think.)

A friend introduced me to this game and I immediately liked it very much. I guess I was like 10 or 11 years old

Well, I think I was 6 or 7 when I first played one of the HoMM before Heroes 3. I can't remember which one it was only that I didn't have a single clue what I was doing
When I was 9 my father bought Heroes 3 and I still didn't have an idea of any tactics. I could barely solve the first mission of the first campaign, that's it
Still it was my favourite game then. Remarkable that it is more than ten years ago.

Wow, I can't believe some people started playing at such a young age! I can't imagine a 4 or 5 year old playing it. Personally, I think I was 16 years old.

I was about 12 when I started on HoMM2 with the kid up the street. His dad was able to beat the pyramid scenario, I thought that was pretty cool.

I must have been around 10 when i first tried HoMM2, i loved it even tho I didn't quite understand it and got my ass kicked by the natural units over and over I remember a couple of years later when HoMM3 was released and I played the demo, I found the graphics so realistic and dark compared to HoMM2. I clearly remember the Beholder looking so awesome
Edit:
I remember when first playing HoMM2, I was trying to defeat some Air Elementals by hiring heroes and just attacking over and over, ending the turn to get more money. I didn't realise they got more powerful each week so my attempts were futile.
I also remember very early I learned the lesson to NEVER attack ghosts, my attacks just made them more powerful!(of course later i understood you can beat them by having a powerful enough army)

I watched my dad and older sister play H2 a lot when I was like 5-6, and when I was around 8 I played H3. I loved it instantly, though it took me almost a year to figure out there were maps other than arrogence to play on . I didn't actually become good at heroes games until years later.

Homm2 when I was 7, one of my friends was playing it too so they introduced me to it.
Started homm3 and stuck to homm3 in '99 I did play RoE only a little, as soon as SoD came out (some time 2000 or so I think), it was all SoD from thereon.
Still is the best of the best games in my book, right next to Age of empires 2 ^^ not saying aoe is better, they re both too good

Wow i still play Age of Empire 2, its a great game!
One of my favorite strategy games ahhhhh the memories is coming back to me!
I am telling you they dont make games as heroes and age of empire good anymore.
