Quote: Hey mentat I am curious?
You say Duke is on life Support?
He is breathing in the life support machine because he can not breath by himself?
If the cancer is all over the place, & he can not breath on his own, would the cancer of basically killed him?
He is on morphine, because he is in alot of pain.
I am not trying to be mean, but what is the point? The cancer won?
He is suffering, he is in pain. Should he rest in peace?
He is in alot of pain yea?
Once again I am not being mean. I am just curious.
His on life-support 'cause hi can't breath on his own. His body do it's best against the cancer but the cancer was in the deadly, uncureable period when the doctors found it. It was always a struggle against pure death without real chance.
He's in pain, the morphines don't work at all, that was what the doctors said after some graphs I not fully understand... And despite all of this here, in Hungary, he can't be killed at all. He must die on his own, noone may help him on any ways...

He's not breathing but his heart still beats as his mind is functioning. He can not be deemed as dead until one of these not knocked out.
And he isn't in a permanent coma either. The doctors said he still regain consciousness for short periods of time.

Hi Mentat, Duke use to talk to me about his cancer as I lost my husband to cancer in July 2010 after a year long battle. He use to tell me he was worried about being in pain and stuff.
I can't understand why they would put him on a life support machine when he has stopped breathing on his own. Surely if he has stopped breathing his body has given up and he is already dead so therefore they wouldn't actually be taking his life. When my husband stopped breathing they didn't put him on a life support machine because there was no way he would get better and it would just prolong the inevitable and the suffering of his family. I am just going on my own experience and I feel really sorry for all his family and friends, my thoughts are with you.

I completely agree that this is the rational approach. But emotionally, it is too cruel. Who would be to decide that? Who would accept that responsibilty, saying "OK, stop the machine"?
I just can't imagine what he and the people around him, his family, are going through. I feel really sorry for all. Wish it was possible for him to recover...

I know exactly how they are feeling I have been there.
I didn't have to make the decission to turn off the life support machine as his body shut down on it's on as he was too weak and sick. I sat with him day and night in the hospital for four days and the one time I fell asleep for 5 minutes I woke to find he had died in his sleep.
In someways I am glad the end came quick and he didn't suffer to much. It was hard enough on our 3 children and myself to watch cancer slowly killing him.

Sad news, even if we suspected it would come to this one day. As someone who has also lost close family members to cancer, I can say that when the situation comes to that point, you can actually say it's better to just let them go than keep them artificially alive - nobody wants their close ones to suffer unnecessarily. I do hope for Duke that he will soon find peace and no more pain.

Well... DAMNIT! It was working, why did it stop! And damn all the "Rational" explanations of the cancer mutating, the people making the cure should have been able to modify it... I'm sorry, I know that it just can't work that way most of the time. Very few people can come back at this point... and a few people that do say that they wished they had... damnit.
I'm sorry, so sorry, for what you are going through. Duke is a good man, and he deserves batter than this. I do not envy what you will have to live through, Mentat, nor do I wish this on anyone. If I were to die, I would want to go surrounded by my friends and family, slowly drifting into sleep and oblivion. Please, make sure someone who cares about him is with him at all times, alright? Some friendly face.
I'm going to go break a wall now. [/serious]

Your thread in the VW seems to me to be a reflection of some kind of maniacal energy you're experiencing as you deal with the grief of someone you care deeply about wasting away.
There are no easy answers, no advice however well-intentioned, that can really assuage our grief during these periods. Understand that you are not alone, there are many people who also experience what you're experiencing. They are the ones who are most able, most capable, of offering consolation and guidance during these times. And quite frankly, I would encourage you to seek out other women for your emotional needs during these times.
The Kübler-Ross model, aka The Five Stages of Grief, lists Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance as stages most of us go through as we cope with our loss. From a textbook perspective, it is neat and tidy. However, we human beings, imperfect as we are, will not often adhere to these stages in order. Do not be surprised if, for example, when you feel you have come to accept the loss, you feel an upwelling of any one of the other stages, be it anger, depression, etc. This is expected. More importantly, it is ok.

In the family I have married into my Hubby has lost a grandmother to cancer and his mom had cancer as well. Many of his family friends have suffered it as well. It's never easy to see, and it's always difficult to be stuck on the sidelines always wishing somebody well. Duke, please do not give up. You have the love of everybody here reaching out to you.

Not fully understand why do you think I need this? But it's interesting at least.
BTW
Duke will survive. One of his relatives told this. Not fully understand but it seems almost everyone believe his words. That's the cause why they don't let him pass so far despite Duke's condition.
I wish I could believe in it so strong like they...

If he can't be cured and if he suffers so much, then I feel like it is more ethical to free him from life.
My father's uncle died of cancer last year and sure everybody cried, but in the end he was really in a lot of pain and suffering so death was a liberation for him.

If Duke somehow managed to make a gradual full recovery after coming to the point of laying comatose on life support with cancer spread throughout his body, it still wouldn't come close to being the most epic comeback.
