I saw this yesterday but I'm still not sure how to respond. It's just devastating news under any circumstances. I have known friends with the same condition, but I won't pretend that I have any useful insights as to how it can best be tackled. I suppose I never will.

So there's really very little of substance I can add verbally. You have my best wishes and my faith. Take heart and don't despair in the wake of it. You're in my thoughts.

Well, that is reallt shocking news to hear. I can really not imagine what you are going through. I know these words wouldn't mean much, but don't be ashamed of yourself, instead be proud of what you accomplished and what you are still going to (After all, you're a noble, right?)
And I do agree that you should tell Her (if you haven't done this already) Without knowing her, I suppose she will support you with all her heart.
Best wishes for your cure.

Father Sky should not take great warriors and I hope he will not call your spirit.

Edit: 1 last recommendation: If you haven't seen the film Bucket List, I would advise you to watch it.
And, yep into hell with most of Hungarian doctors.

Never give up hope.  Fight to the bitter end and fight some more. People do beat cancer or at least fight it stubbornly.  Hell, my secretary's mother had stage 4 lymphoma, got chemo, went in to remission, then within 5 months the lymphoma evolved and spread, got chemo again, then was diagnosed with colon cancer, had a third of her colon removed, and 4 years later she is 87 and still kicking!

Hm... many similar things between yourself and members of my family.

My uncle, who used to bike to work until the mucles used for biking got too big and required reconstructive surgery is an entomologist (bug scientist) for the Province of British Columbia. Showed me his huge bug collection when I was young and went to his office.

But what hits me hardest here is the sudden onset of cancer.

Back in 2003, I was working to save up and go back to college (disliked my course from the year before) when both my mom and her mom were diagnosed with cancer.

My mom had breast cancer, she went through chemo and surgery and managed to recover despite years of discomfort (a cut in her armpit that wouldn't heal right for years for example).

My grandmother did not fare so well.

A little backstory about my Grandmother (Yoshiko). My Grandmother was born in the 30's to the Ochi family. Her father, Makoto was one of a long line of Nobles. He married (I forget my own great Grandmother's name) my Great Grandmother of the Awaya family. The Ochi Family was a Noble family made up of Samurai, during the uprising to overthrow the last Shogun, they defended the Emperor.  The Awaya Family were a Noble family of doctors. Ironically, most of them were wiped out by the Spanish Flu years before that happened.

My Grandfather (Shigeyoshi) had more humble roots, a farmer. His hometown is Hikone. His older brother is the Village Elder there (he leads most of the donation drives to restore damaged or lost monuments. Fortunately it wasn't too hurt by the Tsunami and has been offering more support to victim than anything else). Something interesting however, when my Grandfather was a young boy his family moved to Canada. Eventually, sensing the blatant racism and the calls to do something about the "Yellow problem" posed by "Japs", my Great Grandparents sent their kids back to Japan to be raised by relatives. They stayed in Canada however, and had their property stolen legally by the government and forced into concentration camps.

My Grandparents were only kids to teenagers during World War 2. They met and fell in love in late High School, but my grandfather's parents (when freed) were adamant that he wait until he turned 25 to really be man enough to marry. Meanwhile, my Great Grandfather Makoto was revealed to be a war criminal (or simply doing his job/patriotic duty/civilians always die anyway if you ask people who approve of war). Later on my second-cousin Chris Nobu (Photography Major that he is) would go back to Japan and photograph the old Ochi and Awaya family albums. I have pictures of Russian prisoners from the Russo-Japanese war and flattened Shanghai landscape among all of the pictures of family members lined up for photos in their most dignified garb. (And pictures of the "kids" of the time lined up for class photos) Very interesting stuff. Russo-Japanese era photos are equivalent to European photos around the Prusso-Franco war roughly in time.

Back to the family. A year after marriage, my mother was born (sometime in the 50's). My Grandfather then took his family back to Canada, to his parents. They spent all of their money on the boat out. After the war most of my Grandmother's wealth and posessions were either looted by soldiers or sold to make ends meet during those times (they've recovered of course by now, thank goodness the photos survived the fire bombings and the like), so my grandfather worked as hard as he could for his family. They lived on a shoestring budget, my grandfather working multiple jobs to support my Grandmother, mother and a bit later, my uncle. They would live as cheaply as they could. If a piece of food goes bad, you cut the bad part away and use the rest for stew. Eventually my grandfather got work as a Railroad engineer. (He was always naturally good with mechanical devices and fixing them, he also had a quality education) He worked his way through various jobs with that expertise eventually working his final job before retirement as an Engineer at a grain elevator. (The man is so handy and hard working, if you could do a tenth of what he could you'd be a god among handymen these days. He extended his own house by hand on his own, foundation, construction, electrical and plumbing. He renovates things for family members too. Even now at 80 something. I'm nothing compared to the man.)

I'm just going to say Obasan and Ojisan from here out, it's too annoying to type "my this, my that".

Regardless, Ojisan decideing to retire early was a good decision on his part.

He took my Obasan travelling with him and saw much of the world. They actually got to experience the Pyramids and other Egyptian tourist destinations with none of the usual crowd (great timing actually, going right after a Terrorist attack scared away the other tourists). They'd gone to China and were able to communicate in writing. They'd explored many places in Europe, gone to Australia, South America. I believe that was the last place they got to go together. On the way back, my Obasan felt sick. They checked her out and it was a sudden onset of intestinal cancer. They gave her treatments and cut out what they could as a last ditch effort, but it was too late. They couldn't cut out any more intestine without it certainly killing her. She faced her fate stoically but I still am saddened that I did not get to get her to meet my wife (then girlfriend) before she passed away. Obasan died of starvation because the cancer prevented food from passing through her intestine.

I married my wife in 2005. I do not have anything to show for my own Noble lineage except some photos and a few hundred+ year old paintings/artifacts at my mother's house that survived the years. I wouldn't dare ask my family back in Japan for anything either, it's not proper. Though, I am aware some Noble families aroudn the world have snows worth far more than I am.

My suggestions for you Duke Falcon:

Since you are still in the prime of your youth, you may not be able to face things as easily as Obasan stared down death. However, are you entitled to anything? Do you have access to family holdings or wealth? If so, (give me some) do what I would do if your situation is to use it to leave a mark that improves the world in at least a slightly significant way.

Or, alternatively, you go go and enjoy your life in an orgy of unbridled hedonism. That's the easy way out though and no way for either a real man or a Noble to act. Still hasn't stopped plenty of people in the past.

If you have access to an estate, you could turn it into an orphanage. You could use any sort of wealth to start a non-profit anything (heck, even a video game company) where all profits go to either feeding the poor or AIDS research (or mad science if you're so inclined). If your family owns property in the city, would could use it to start a soup kitchen/homeless shelter (maybe partner up with a local charity for the long term running of it).

You are a kind man, at least from what I have seen. That is not a failing as much as we self-deprecating types may think of it when it applies to ourselves. You are not a failure as a man. Just because your time if more finite than others does not mean you cannot grab life by the (what have you) and ride it hard like a midnight pony. Especially if you have access to resources beyond a "normal" man's means.

If you'd like, I'll try to scan some of those photos I mentioned later on.

Maybe we can swap photos of relatives in stuffy old clothes.

Keep your chin up, you are what you make yourself. Don't let yourself down.

Edit: Wow, poured my heart out.

Sorry for the wall of text. I never write this long.

Edit 2:

My uncle who I mentioned being my mom's younger brother is the Entomologist uncle I mentioned earlier.

I am some kind of 'deprived' noble...
When Hungary was invaded (freed as history books call it) by the soviets there came an era of socialism where my House was stripped all of it's lands and wealth. Until 1990 we can't use our noble titles to. Now we can call themselves nobles again, use our ranks and titles but we didn't got our wealth back. Hungary just do not intented to pay back what is stolen from our House.
That little wealth what we rescued is common property of the members of my House so theoretically I have access for it. But the real case I ain't until I become a full pledged noble as I am a mere heir now (and it seems I left as so).
I can't really use my military rank nowadays as the highest rank that someone could bear without promotion is 'Lieutenant' and not 'Captain'. But I find it challenging and not ashameing...

I can carve my name in the remembrace only if I do something really great on my own. But you're right when you said I generally a kind and generous noble (as I experienced so far it is a rare trait) who help others if can.
Only thing is I forbid to everyone is to use of my body after my death by any meaning. Everyone in my House did that because of some of our uncommon traits of our physiology. Here in Hungary people label others easely if she\he bear some uncommon. And my House suffered enough under the millenias.

I, furthermore, thank you telling my your family's history. It was a sad story indeed, something that your family didn't deserved. I wish that your family or your House have a brighter future!

EDIT
I do not have a collection so far as I still searching special boxes for my collection. But I have plenty prepared and identified specimens, some of them are from Turkey (e.g.: Decticus albifrons) and Morocco (e.g.: Acanthoplus discoidalis)...

Seems we have a lot in common then.

Wasn't the government beyond Socialist? A Socialist country can still have wealthy Nobles. I thought it was more because of the near-Communist dictatorship.

Either way, sorry to hear that your Noble standing is much like mine. You can still find something though.

Think postively, you will succeed. Mind over matter.

On a positive note doctors always under diagnose how long you live, mostly for liability. Even though your best shot to beat the cancer is having a positive attitude (not exaggerating - your mental attitude is highly influential of your immune system), they always give short estimates. I know plenty of people who say the doctor say it is a miracle they live as long as they do, but it's not at all, doctors just give you short estimates.

On the other hand if your cancer has metastasized (spread through your body) you are pretty much snowed in.

Fight it though, it is beatable.

No disrespect to you duke, thieves whom with their wealth purchased titles (obviously there were those truly noble) and used to law to protect their wealth this is not what nobility should be. Hungary needs nobles (you know what i mean) and if your worthy of the title you will be a noble, but no-more will i pay homage to those who demand respect for no other reason then being born into a noble house.

It is not titles that honor men, but men that honor titles. -Niccolo Machiavelli.
