Poll Question:
Appointing some kinda Secondary Admin
I just think this place could REALLY use an admin. If only just for uploading avatars monthly at least, but for other tasks as well.
I'm not sure how Val would feel about the idea, but perhaps bestowing some of the admin-powas unto some trustworthy member would be a good idea?
Like eh... Cepheus maybe?

More seriously, though, I totally agree with the idea. Elvin or Doomforge, or why not Adrius - somebody, anyway, to deal with the neglected tasks here is sorely needed.

I've HCMed Val a few times about this idea and also volunteered to help out as a mod if he needed someone, and emailed him as well, but every time the HCM expired without being read - and he never replied to my email.

Unfortunately I do not have it any more. It was rather short, however - merely I told him that this place suffers for lack of moderating activity. And not only because of the obvious reason that a scant few troublemakers have gone undisciplined.
Point of fact is that Val designed HC around a QP system that provides privileges to users who post in good ways. I think it's a reasonbly good system that motivates users to behave through positive, rather than negative, feedback from the community. However, a constant supply of active moderators is a critical component of this system because only moderators can award QPs. Without moderators, no QPs are awarded and so new users do not earn privileges, such as removal of flood protect. Without a bunch of active mods, there's no motivation for new users to stick around and become permanent, contributing members of the community - they can't even post properly even if they want to. I know a number of people say that HC members are well behaved and need little moderation. That's a matter of opinion, of course, but even if I think the average HC user is much more mature and respectful of other people than users at other websites, it remains that no matter how well people behave at HC, this place cannot function properly without moderators to fulfill the role of handing out QPs so that new users can get the privileges they need in order to flourish. And I've seen how a lot of our new users have expressed hard feelings because of this problem, and this problem, I need not remind everyone, will only be exacerbated when H6 comes out.
Subsequently I told Val that a majority of the mods here are no longer active. In fact I count about 1 or maybe 2 that are here on a regular basis. I see lots of posts that should be getting QPs but which don't because there are no mods around to do it. I told him I'd be willing to suggest a few people here who I thought would be ideal mods, and volunteered my own services if he ultimately decided to replace some of the inactive mods. I also told him that it was no secret that he's not around any more, that there are a lot of good suggestions of how to modernize a frankly antequated forum design that have long gone unanswered, and wondered whether he had considered taking on an assistant admin to deal with some of the administrative and programming duties he was no longer interested in doing. He obviously continues to pay for the board's upkeep, which I'm sure we all appreciate, but he should be aware that this place will not survive indefinitely if the neglect continues.
Well, that was about it. I guess you can forward that to him if you want. I'll also point out that the fact that 3 messages to an admin sent from a single person (me) expired before they were read is pretty much proof in the pudding that this place needs some new admin support. But then again I've been saying that for quite some time.

A second admin who could debug HC from time to time and update the avatars would be most appreciated, let's get one.

There are other game forums, as Civilization, who work much better even without any QP (why it needs?!) or active moderators, but intelligent organization of forums at start. By keeping Wastelands, HC is inviting all troubled makers and offers them a well aroused land. Why are allowed threads about sex, penis, pee, puke or others like? There are BS forums out there which are better for those. In "CiV Fan" forums, if you start one of those, you don't get banned but no one is reading/replying to it because the goals are higher. No attention, no reason to keep trolling.

I must disagree with the latest statement. Off-topic chatter, both Tavern and Wasteland material, has been here for as long as I have been here (that is, since 2003, but knowing that, must have been even since before). Hence, it is a crucial part in the forum. Many other game forums feel desolate without such a place to vent out from time to time, or to just have some fun.

Well, ok, but then why want to regulate those forums? They are for fun, still people ask additional moderators to deal with. If you open a forum to all kind of posts, you will have the best and the worse at one time. And for the qp's, I find strange than no one requested more rewards in gaming forums, where people work on long and exhausting projects, but is constantly asked in "fun forums".
