The police are "considering" using rubber bullets, which I had suggested a couple of days ago. I say the time for "considering" should be over. They need to protect the public and themselves.

Police said they were working full-tilt, but found themselves under attack -- from rioters roaming the streets, from a scared and worried public, and from politicians whose cost-cutting is squeezing police numbers ahead of next year's Olympic Games.

London's Metropolitan Police force vowed an unprecedented operation to stop more rioting, flooding the streets Tuesday with 16,000 officers, nearly three times Monday's total.

Although the riots started Saturday with a protest over a police shooting, they have morphed into a general lawlessness that police have struggled to halt with ordinary tactics. Police in Britain generally avoid tear gas, water cannons or other strong-arm riot measures. Many shops targeted by looters had goods that youths would want anyway -- sneakers, bikes, electronics, leather goods -- while other buildings were torched apparently just for the fun of seeing something burn.

Police said plastic bullets were "one of the tactics" being considered to stop the looting. The bullets were common in Northern Ireland durings its years of unrest but have never before been used in mainland Britain.

16,000 cops on the street and they still can't stop the riots? It is time go "John Wayne" on the criminals.

That is what the rioters are.....criminals. They are not poor misunderstood, downtrodden people oppressed by racist white cops. I grew up poor and never felt the need to burn down shops, assault and steal from poeple, turn over cars, ect.

There are a number of videos you can see on you tube about the riots. Here is you can hear a woman screaming as criminals are breaking into the shop at the beginning of the video.

Rofl I actually suggested that , I mean black rioters and a black cop out gets shot??  Something smelt fishy, and of-course the plot thickhens...

But Moroe is there a link you can provide? Or was this a private source?

Elodin: the peaceful protest as a result of the dead guy (Ill copy n paste name in a sec ), the protest was, because of the black hating police. The oppertunist thugs that decided to loot and rob are indeed criminals, and the police will deal with them accordingly.

Also they are poor misunderstood downtrodden people oppressed by racist white cops, and this is how these kind of people decide to act when they've had enough, the only way they know how. I don't approve of the riot, but then again I don't approve of how they were/are treated.

My grandparents and uncle live in England and they have been telling me about it, the news and newspapers.  Grandad is from Tottenham, they have friends there and in  Edmonton, Enfield and Harlow.

Yes that has been reported in the news apparently.

England's too much of a 'nanny state'.   This is what happens when the Government plays too much of a part in family life.  Not allowed to discipline your own children, then schools can't discipline them.  Then wonder why you have gangs of ignorant angry mobs.  Hmmm.

This is mostly opportunitists using what happened to start free Christmas shopping.  Violence for violence sake.  People have even been stripped of their clothes by looters.

I understand why they wouldn't want to bust out the hardcore anti-riot gear right away, but 3 nights in a row... oof. At that point I'd just accept the bad PR and do it. I would be sooo pissed off being a cop and having to just stand there while those ****bags trash the city.

What you have to ask is that if the rioters don't have jobs or don't have reliable jobs, then how long would they be willing to keep it up? Do they have somewhere they need to be? Riots/mobs of working people aren't as dangerous because such riots have an inherently short life span. Not necessarily the case with this.

Lol Morore back in Hungary teachers often used to tell parents to beat their children more often , back in the day of course.

And though I hate rebellions, because all they cause is chaos with no real positive to it.
But this is different...

And blizz: people with nothing to lose are increadably dangerous, because they are relentless.

Definitely sounds like the London police need to change to a more active strategy, at least until things get under control.  Either that or bring in the national guard (or whatever Britain's equivalent is).

Absolutely no way in England Tsar.  The schools are crazy anyway.  Teachers have no authority.  Hell even the police have no authority.  God forbid you should scold a child!!!!   No no no, can't upset them in any way.  That's why England has such violent children.  Surely you've heard the stories.  Trust me its even worse over there.

This behavior doesn't surprise me at all.  I'm just amazed that so many parasites and layabouts have actually managed to get off their fat asses to riot in the streets.  I guess they must really need the groceries huh.

Don't get too deep into this.  Most of the people are unemployed who live off benefits.  They have no intention of ever working or bettering themselves.  They are lazy, selfish and believe the world owes them a favor.  For them this is just a great excuse to go stealing and get themselves a few items, that they mostly have to steal anyway.  But at least this way there is less chance of them getting caught.

Corribus, this isn't the norm, we have peaceful protests (some a little hectic), but this is the first time this has happened in a very long time (if it ever happened before), egro no real measures have been put in-place. As for the children, I was beaten and I turned out fine (not that I approve , I just don't care, it's in the past and I'm on good terms with my father), but I doubt I'll ever need to dicipline my child that way, then again thats what we all say .

My parents didn't make me work, because they were lazy, but because it was my duty at the time. English kids don't know what work is, nor what it means to be needed, but it's not their fault if nobody showed or taught them, weak children yields a weak country and a weak country is easy prey to conquest. Fortunaly, Europe has now realized that there are in fact problems. And you notice that when you see what kinds of political parties that are growing in Europe at the moment.

Hoping I don't sound to racist, just tell me if I cross the line but its the truth.

My friends living in the southern part of London said that tonight would be the make-or-break point of this outrage, so I also agree that the police should bring out the (rubber) firearms and some tear gas, unless they want to represent themselves as the most incompetent police force in Europe.

The police should've acted on day 1. These looters are stealing and destroying private property. Even if the cop who shot the drug dealer wasn't doing it in self-defense, that doesn't justify tolerating these hooligans.
