I'm talking about the first Dark Souls. It is on Steam sale right now for like <$7. As I think I mentioned earlier in this thread, I wasn't overly fond of Demons Souls, as much as I tried to like it. I am wondering if I might enjoy the experience more on PC. But the online "features" like people coming into your game and killing you just doesn't appeal much to me. If I can't play it in single-player, offline mode, I haven't much interest.

The whole invade crap only happens if you strut around certain designated areas as a human. (and the boss must still be alive for both of you) Some places are more common than the others.
Also I just finished Dark souls in preparation for DS2. I tried to pursue all those little mini side stuff, but in the end I had nothing to show for them, so just rushed the "main story". I mostly ran around as a light two hander, but for boss fights such as Artorias and Manus I just donned the heaviest crap I had (Most poise I find is better for me than defence) then I could just take most of their really annoying hits without trouble. (they have auto-lock attacks, so dodging is much harder than most bosses, and blocking is crap when they drop the combos)

You can play offline and that is the only way I have played the game on PC (I own it on Xbox and PC). Basically you need to create an offline account for Games for Windows Live or whatever system it uses. It is not a difficult process and you do not miss out on anything playing single player.

Can I play it with a mouse/keyboard, or is a game controller necessary?

You can play with a mouse/keyboard configuration (I have never tried it though).

Steam says controller "strongly recommended". But I do not own one compatible with PC.

An Xbox 360 wired controller works perfectly with PCs (incase you have a console and did not know).

Admittedly, I have never tried it without a controller and have no desire to do so.

You can play it without a controller but i strongly advice against it, assuming we're talking about Dark Souls prepare to die edition. I played it for a bit without and it was horrible, mouse and keyboard made it very clunky.

@DG, Az
I see there is a mod available for mouse/keyboard support. Does this help at all?

I think it may alleviate the issue. DS2 did okay keyboard + mouse controls. It also may require some getting used to. As I said before, controller really is the best way out (since every button elegantly corresponds to a specific action and I'd just not be used to the extra keyboard keys) but I have a friend who finished the game on unmodded keyboard + mouse, so it's definitely doable if you're willing to spend some time getting adjusted.
You have no official Sony PS3 controller, I take it, then?

i'm like that about computer controls. they feel unnatural. a controller, on the other hand, is so much more ergonomic; and easy to use.

Damn I didn't see that the sale was only gonna last for another 20 minutes q_q or I'd replied sooner.
I can't speak from experience to wether the mod does alleviate most of the difficulties that come from playing without controller. The thing is just that for me personally most of the enjoyment from this came from me gradually improving and elegantly dancing around foes that can 2 shot me after having learned my lessons in blood, sweat and tears from previous experiences, all that came to be because the controls worked very fluently.
Dark Souls already is an unforgiving and at times frustrating experience , but I found it a lot easier to accept that since me dying was mostly my fault (except for the occasional "THIS IS BULL****" moment). Having unresponsive controls and shacky camera control will not make for an more ejoyable experience and only make it needlessly harder and frustrating to get through the game (I bought a controller like 3 hours into the game cause the mouse keyboard thing was killing me).
That being said I enjoyed the game immensely (playing with a controller) and for 7$ I think nobody should pass it up.

I don't.
....wait a moment.. that means... I'm not your friend? Then I must be your best friend
Jokes aside, I saw a youtube playthrough of the game, and I liked a lot of what I saw. Not that it'd ever make me buy anything, mind you.
The guy even tried to get people to join his game for co-op, but he'd connection issues and was still able to play.

No, didn't. I'm sure it'll be on sale again, at which point I'll vacillate till the last moment and probably do nothing. For $7 you'd think I'd just say wth and buy the damn thing.
