Steve Jobs is dead!
We all expected it sooner or later after all we heard this year, but now it happened pretty fast after his retirement as CEO in august.
Yesterday, Steve Jobs, APPLE founder in 1976, died of cancer.

If only God was more like Apple, and could bring him back as Steve Jobs 2S.

"Competent" is the last thing I would say about him. He was not an engineer, he was just master of public relations.

Your point is valid.
However, compared to other CEOs, he is extremely competent. The company has not produced a lot of Vaporware, he has spend reasonable amounts of money on Research and Development, and he was a failswitch before anything was made public.
We got the iPhone, the iPad, the Macbook air and nice OS improvements for OS X.
It is a lot more than what any competitor of Apple can say they have done.

We may not use his products in this house.
And all of said products are always shinier versions of something that is already out but missing features.
But it's always a shame when somebody dies, particularly somebody who could be so successful. I know a lot of people will miss him even those that did not respect him. (In many cases, some of them would now)
Funny he should die on the week my hubby handed in his 2 weeks notice so he could go to a different job.
We'll actually have a smart phone in the house because the new job pays for the phone plan.

We will. I have a certain respect for Steve Jobs because he managed to make something intentionally bad (for its price) and get people to buy it. He succeeded in making money from hipsters/college students. Macs cost twice as much as PCs (roughly), but Jobs's excellent marketing skills entice people to buy them anyway. It is my opinion that no one should ever buy his products (with some exceptions), but I can't deny what he did.

I still can't believe that most Americans call mp3 players "ipods" even though Ipod is an overpriced and weaker substitute for really good mp3 players of Iriver, Iaudio and Meizu.
Guess Jobs' marketing was godly.

It was crazy marketing, the first iPods didn't even work with PCs. They also had much less space than the competition for a much higher price and only used firewire.
Microsoft has been pushing Tablets since the 90's but Apple got them to catch on.
Somehow they dominate despite not adopting features competitors have for much longer (bluetooth, front cameras, business email features, copy/paste, multitasking, etc).
The new version of Mac OS in fact is apparently missing a bunch of features in favour of giving it a more iphone-like appeal.
You have to admire Steve, he succeeded in selling these things like they were God's gift to the world, and people bought the hype like crazy.

Haha yeah I stare at the stuff and my brain says "OVERPRICED CRAP!" and then it says "And so white... and STYLISH!".
He made the stuff into a status symbol.

Is it because of that cult/religious thing [CANADA] you're involved in, which prohibits you from being allowed to apply such products?

I've never cared for Apple's computers, but I recently purchased an itouch4 and it's worlds beyond any other mp3 player I've ever owned. Not even a contest.
More generally, am I the only one who finds it somewhat strange that, in an era marked by so much hostility towards corporations, people are leaving flowers at Apple HQ and Apple stores around the country? The man was one of those uber-rich everyone loves to hate on, and yet he's treated like a demigod, and eulogized like the pope.

Maybe because despite not even doing much in the way of philanthropy he used the apple website to support liberal causes like Product Red and repealing prop 8?

I doubt its that... its just that people didnt associate an evil cooperation stealing their money from them, or some super rich douchebag that doesnt deserve his wealth when they saw Jobs. He was always this casual, very hip and stylish innovator to people. And they loved him for that. Steve "got" them is my guess. That and they love his apple products. I doubt most people knew that he was doing work for beneficial causes.
I dont know the man, but I hate his products with a passion since everyone seems to think they are so superior and that if you want to be cool, in, hip, stylish, up-to-date, avant garde and what not you HAD to have MAC stuff. I laugh everytime I see guy sitting in a starbucks with a scarf, sipping his coffee while typing on his macbook and listening to the new cool music on his NEW I-phone. LOL thats what I associate with apple.
Still sad that he died, he was a clever man.

I don't honestly know anything about Steve Jobs. Did he invent something really special or did he just have a reputation for being a really suave guy?
Either he was really awesome or it's a slow news week. It's as though the Newton of our age died with the way it's hitting the headlines.
