I dont know the man, but I hate his products with a passion since everyone seems to think they are so superior and that if you want to be cool, in, hip, stylish, up-to-date, avant garde and what not you HAD to have MAC stuff. I laugh everytime I see guy sitting in a starbucks with a scarf, sipping his coffee while typing on his macbook and listening to the new cool music on his NEW I-phone. LOL thats what I associate with apple.

The funny thing is that Apple was about being different rather than bein some drone that's exactly the same. The problem is that these products are all the same and designed the exact way that Apple used to criticize other proucts for (Sterile, clean, smooth metal or white/black plastic, mass produced exactly the same like an army of drones). I also largely see them used by hipsters who think they're so different and special for having something that is in the majority. Also the draconian ways that Apple prevents people from doing what they want with their own devices (They stupidly banned absolutely any program not written in certain languages until they were almost held under contempt of anti-trust laws, they initially tried the Sony route of legal action against Jailbreakers, will not allow any software to be written to work for the device without the source code of the software to be handed over later and in many cases, stolen when applied for free as an OS update. Talking about Phone/Touch/Pad here not mac... for now). There are plenty of other people that own these things to, but they don't go out of their way to show them off to show how "different" they think (that's not even proper grammar. It's like whoever made that slogan found it "unpossible" to fail english. To be honest I had difficulty in English class, being an immigrant and all, but I got much better eventually. Even I could tell that slogan was just wrong)

I recently purchased an itouch4 and it's worlds beyond any other mp3 player I've ever owned.  Not even a contest.

For starters, the touch is a great MP3 player, but only because it's not one, it's a handheld computer. It could not have ever been made if all the previous iPods were not so ridiculously popular when better competition was available. The thing about iPod touches is that they are extremely available due to their ubiquity as far as mp3 players go. Better ones exist, but they are not nearly as easily available. Ones that can play far more media formats, do not rely on iTunes to bloat up your computer and (in the case of ones that are in fact mini-computers) allow you to install whatever you please with your own device rather than nanny-ing you.

Everybody has their own opinions, but that's how I see it.

Whats wrong with the article from your point of view? I dont like his tone or his writing style but he is obviously being deliberatly antagonizing. Its in poor taste to talk of the dead in such ways if you ask me.
Now if we are talking about what he is saying, I dont see why I should be shocked or reprimand him. He is right afterall.

I agree with you Azagal. He is right but I was shocked at how blunt he was with his words. The tone isn't particularly respectful. If he worded the article slightly differently it could probably have been a great piece of literature.

Well maybe not great literature, but perhaps a great article. I mean it is an interesting observation that this man is so incredibly revered by this generation, eventhough he has done very little of "actual" greatness. I mean he was a great marketing guy, as he is proving even now. But still...

well, but he is right, if steve jobs get that much praise, then why not almost everyone else?

of course the problem isn't steve jobs himself, but it's just the trend he started, it's just because it's so cool and hype to own an iphone. and the vaccine against polio? who cares, that doesn't make you cooler. but thanks to jobs, you can be cool, having an iphone.

well maybe jobs didn't have any philanthropic organization worth mentionning, but I read that our greatest philanthrope Bill Gates (I was going to write Bob Page ) conceals eugenic programs into humanitary programs.

The guy makes good points but his conclusion is wrong. Yes, Jobs didn't do anything innovative. But he was successful despite that, and that's what makes him great. It takes some skill to make people waste their money like that. He made "shiny and made by Apple" into something worth a high premium.

His article lacks tact but there's some truth to his point.  The way the media (and the public) has deified the man is nothing short of ridiculous.

I heard one source saying that he was this generation's Einstein.  Seriously?  Einstein?

Unfortunately, this coming generation and media in these years is very quick at saying huge things, either bad or good. A woman who can sing a little comes, and they go "she is the new Tina Turner!". A man who just learned playing a guitar comes and they go "he is like Jimi Hendrix", a child who composed 1-line of music in his age of 15  they will call "he is the new Mozart", etc. So I'm not even surprised at this Einstein business.

It's media lol, I'd be complaining if they didn't exaggerate, since I dare-say the news would be considerably 'blander', but I see your angle.

I'm analysing all the different techniques (layout, fonts, et cetera) involved in newspapers and magazines and lol it's all pcychology, baby .

Really people out there consider him great and I dare-say they got joy out of the life of Steve to the extent to consider him 'great', but because he pales in comparison to scientists he ain't 'great'? Reeeeally lol?

@the article:

The main problem I have with the article is that I think he's being preemptive on his accusations of Jobs being acclaimed a great individual of history. He was a CEO/celebrity figure that just died, so of course there's going to be a bunch of hype right now. (I mean what do you want the news to talk about... the latest developments in Libya for the 50th time in a row?) The question on his historical greatness is if he's still going to be an icon 5, 10, or 50 years from now. Will he be a common name in textbooks? If he is, then you can start criticizing the validity of his greatness. Also, I rolled my eyes at his comment "the bankruptcy of a particular age in producing truly great individuals". The author doesn't understand how history usually operates. Most of the world's incredibly famous people were far less famous during the time in which they were actually alive, and that includes inventors/thinkers.  I'm sure there's going to be plenty of admired people in our generation 100 years from now.
