Well are you looking for empathetic or sympathetic?
And in any case, I don't think a character has to be either in order to be interesting. I can think of a lot of great characters that I neither feel sympathy towards or can empathize with.
But to each his own I guess.

I think it's my sheer hatred for the Deb character that has forever turned me off to Dexter.

Well, Corribus, you are right that season 4 was decent, but 3 and 5 were simply unexciting.
Another problem with Dexter is that the longer the show goes, the less credible it gets. I mean how many serial killers can appear in a single town in X years? I'd probably start to freak out if dismembered bodies would appear in random places all around my town on an annual basis. Also, why is Sgt. Doakes (and maybe Quinn) are the only characters that have any suspicions about Dexter? And there are aome smaller plot holes as well.
In the new Season, they are even more lazy, in ep2 there's a direct cut to a kill room with DEx's new victim. No preparations, no chase, no messups/difficulties at all. Sorry, but I don't see how this is an improvement over the brilliant first two seasons.
Anyhoo, that's my 2 cents. Feel free to disagree

My main problem with Dexter out of three seasons that I have watched, is that the basic plot and outcome is the same.
*******SPOILERS*****
Dexter meets someone who can understand him and accept him for what he is (1st long lost brother, 2nd lover, 3rd a friend) but in the end he passes judgment on them too and kills them. Well, I haven't watched season 3 to the end, but I'm sure this is how it will end.
*******************
It got kind of tiring in season 3.

Crime/Thriller
Dexter - The best there is atm
Monk - Not everything is equally good, but a show that relies on plot rather than sex and technology doing the job
Lie to me - Season 1 was the best, but still an interesting show, too bad it got cancelled
24 - You know what you get, but it's still thrilling, and good production
Criminal Minds - One of the few "mainstream" crime shows I like
Band of Brothers - The only war series I've ever enjoyed, and historically correct as well.
Comedy
3D Rock From The Sun - Simply brilliant show, especially the early parts
News Radio - A lesser known sitcom from the past, but brilliant humor and good characters
Better off Ted - Another little known show that got cancelled. Might not seem all that good in the beginning, but watch 3-4 episodes and the show just gets better and better!
Futurama - The funnier younger brother of Simpsons
Frasier - Big Bang Theory did to physics what Frasier did to art, opera and wine. The best and most successful spin-off in history.
The Office - I liked the UK version best, but the US version has it's merits too.
Mind Your Language - If you think language jokes and misunderstandings are funny, you'll love this show. If you didn't laugh during the first episode, you won't laugh of any of the others. If you did laugh, you'll love the rest as well. Lovely stereotypical characters!
Fawlty Towers - The best work of Jon Cleese
Who's Line Is It Anyway - Improvisation at it's best!
- Much of british comedy in general
Shows I started out liking, but turned bad
Lost
House
Heroes
Prison Break (but I watched all seasons nevertheless)
Family Guy
American Dad
King of Queens
Everybody Loves Raymond
Battlestar Galactica
....
The list is actually too long, so I won't do it.

Ok,here's my list. All of them are unique though,I don't know whom to put first or second:
The Mentalist-Great intelligence in solving crimes.
A Game of Thrones-NO 1 Books for me!However TV series has no big battles and too much "romance".I heard however that on season 2,episode 9 is named Blackwater and will treat the Battle of Blackwater Bay from beggining to the end.
Monk-Great series.Alot of intelligence but comedy too.
Lie to Me-Unique series.Does anyone know how to learn those face tricks?
Psych-The detail-watching thing is really great and the comic situations in which the characters are involved

So I watched last night the first episode of the Walking Dead second season. I'm not impressed but I'm glad they're trying to go back to the comic book series storyline. I don't think though they're going to follow it, and that sucks. I consider the comics superior to the TV series but still it's one of the best live action series that I've watched.

Dexter is probably my favourite. A lot of people say Family Guy but I think that's one of the most unfunny, crap shows I've ever watched.

Current shows I love in pretty much random order:
Dexter
Damages
True Blood
Modern Family
Hung
Past shows that deserve mention:
6 Feet Under (best TV series ever!)
Coupling (the funny equivalent to Friends)
Frasier (yeah, that was way better than the show it originated from)

Fringe - a good mix of fiction and science
Game of thrones - unpredictable fantacy unless you have not read the books.
Boondock - animated series baced on a comic strip. It's a social satire.
The big bang theory - comedy about physicists. IMO Jim Parsons (Dr. Sheldon Cooper) is the best actor in the show.
How I met your mother - another good comedy. It's something like "Friends"

Not all of them are serial killers. You have to remember, a lot of parts of America are violent and killings happen all the time. Dexter just targets people who thought they got away with it and then kills them. There have only been a few serial killers in the area. Some of the other ones haven't been from around the area.
Also, in the very first episode, Doakes has a go at Dexter and Dexter poses the question (to himself) of why, out of everyone in the police precinct, is Doakes the only one that thinks Dexter is strange? He's just one of those cops who has a gut feeling that somebody is suspicious. What's wrong with that? In fact, how is that even a plothole?
You have to take the show for what it is. A show. Of course it's not going to be the most realistic thing in the world but it's just a show. They have to write these things in to make them entertaining. How entertaining would a show about a guy who kills other killers be if there weren't that many killers? It'd be crap and would defeat the purpose of the show. Just take it for what it is and enjoy it instead of complaining about it. People like yourself annoy me because you expect everything to be realistic and just complain for the sake of it. It's a show. Enjoy it. It's Dexter, I mean, how can you not enjoy it?
Speaking of that, what do people think of the new season? I think it's a hell of a lot better than season 5. I didn't much like season 5. I actually thought it was one of the more boring ones, in the same way as season 3 was. I'm loving this one already. The two serial killers are amazing.
Going off topic, I can't understand how people can like 'Friends'. It's the most unfunny comedies I've ever seen in my entire life. Everything about it is just stupid. Don't get me wrong, I like the odd bit of stupid humour but Friends isn't that type of humour that I like. I find some of the humour to be very forced.

YES SOMEBODY ELSE SEES THE LIGHT ON FRIENDS.
Seriously though, Couplingis way, WAY superior to their American Counterpart, like always. All Friends has is like... Lisa Kudrow being a quirky retard in every episode (which is funny <3) and that's it.
Then again it really isn't surprising that the British version of a show is better than the American one, because the latter country is a country that actually thinks Jack Black, Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy are "funny" (ew.barf.)

I'm not asking for 100% percent realism, I'm asking for plausability. One brutal serial killer per year in the same town is not plausible in my eyes (not to mention the 20-30 criminals who disappeared as well without anybody noticing at the police). While the show is good at making you forget these matters in the heat of the moment, eventually after X episodes basic logic kicks in, and makes you realise how ridiculous it is.
Also, there is not really a huge progress in Dex's character or the storyline, almost all of the seasons have the same storyline, with some twist here and there. After 5 whole seasons, this is getting a bit boring.

I don't know about that. Dexter is still very good. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (cos of my gf ) got better after Season 4 and the last 2 (had 7 seasons) were very good. Seinfeld was still good after Season 4. Supernatural is still good after Season 4. There are a lot of others that were still good after Season 4 so you're wrong really. And why only 4 Seasons? That's a bit crap really. Some shows need a lot as the story can be quite big and it'd be hard to cram that into 4 seasons plus they can continuously be changed and still be interesting so I dunno why you'd say that. lol
