Quote: Name one game breaking problem in H5 that stopped you from playing.
It crashed randomly, certain creature abilities/spells did pretty strange things on regular basis, the multi-player was basically non-existent both as functionality and balance between the factions, too few maps, most of them small (I very rarely play on small maps), no map editor, buggy and incredibly stupid campaign, idiotic AI. The bottom line is that - if you don't want to play the moronic campaign - you have a very small number of skirmish maps where you can play against an AI which is at a total loss what it is supposed to do and that's it. Far, very far from playable. What we have now is a bit better, although it proves once again that Ubisoft are a bunch or incompetent money-suckers who deserve only a permanent subscription to the labour bureau.
So, it crashed randomly? Heroes VI does so too. It crashes every now and then and not just that but it kicks you out of the game, losing your progress if you somehow lose connection to the internet.
Certain creature abilities/spells did pretty strange things on regular basis? That's the case in Heroes VI just as well. Many of the numbers are wrong, and some don't work at all.
The Multiplayer was basically non-existent? Check that for Heroes VI too. No simultaneous turns, no playing hotseat without having unlocked campaign heroes, you're not even allowed to use other heroes.
No balance between the factions? Heroes VI has triumphantly destroyed balance. Necro too powerful, Inferno too weak. Blood and Tears path are not balanced either, the path you have to choose is clear.
Too few maps? Heroes VI has even fewer.
Buggy and incredibly stupid campaign? Heroes VI says hello again! The most annoying characters I have ever seen in a Heroes game, probably some of the most annoying characters ever in any video game. Buggy? Buggy is Heroes VI's middle name!
Idiotic AI? I can't see how it could possibly be more idiotic than Heroes VI's. At least HV's Heroes would stay and give you a good fight that you had no chance winning with 0 casualties even in big army combats.
And then Heroes VI also has the worst Town Screens ever, "killed" management, unfinished objects, a sneaky DRM, a useless online save system, annoyingly slow loading even after the game is supposedly loaded, extremely awful optimization, no anti-aliasing, lacking a lot of classic features, overpowered healing spells that make the game ridiculously easy, no RMG, duplicate creatures, disappearing unlockables, and the list goes on and on and on...
I can't believe that Heroes V was worse than this on release. I can't even imagine it.
But anyway, the worst was Heroes IV, hands down on that.

Heroes IV is the only game I ever bought and never finished. That's how bad it was to me. Played just about half a campaign and some skirmish and then gave up on it for good. It's the game I regret wasting money on, the most.

Blame your imagination then, it was worse. Although not much worse.

Technically Heroes IV was far better than both Ubisoft Heroes when released - I can't recall a single game-breaking bug. As for the rest - it's a matter of preference. At least it has the excuse of being rushed and underdeveloped due to the circumstances, unlike the next games.

Heroes 4 was not a bad game, it was just a bad Heroes game. I might even have forgiven them the ugly design and poor faction designs had they made unit upgrades, but alas.

To be fair, Heroes 5 suffored the same "if I can't beat you it's probably better I just retreat on turn 1 and loose all my troops" syndrome as Heroes 6 does, it did take them quite a while to get that one balanced properly.

You should try "The Ball" I was just decieved with its trailer. And it was just a f*cking waste of money and half an hour of my life. What's the difference between teaser and trailer anyway? Is it just teaser is shorter?

HoMM4 is still one of my favorite games and I, personally, enjoyed it more than HoMM3. I know this will raise several eyebrows, but hey, that's how it is.
Strong story + likeable characters + improved graphics (over H3) + best Heroes music ever = win

I don't know that I would call what they did in Heroes IV improved graphics.
Maybe "graphics that use newer technology".
Definitely not improved.

@Zenofex
Yeah, I recognize that NWC was on the verge of bankruptcy and they could not fund H4 properly. Ubisoft isn't though and still is not funding H6 properly. On that account, at least H4 was better.
@Alcibiades
At least in H5, Town Portal, Hero free resurrection and overpowered healing spells were not so readily available. I remember having some epic fights in H5, which I won with a lot of casualties. Something like that misses so far from the H6 campaign.

Even mentioning H5 release is silly. The game was unplayable, H6 current balance is much better if you can imagine that.

That's just it though. Who cares about balance when you have game breaking bugs that won't even let you finish a game?
I know Cepheus mentioned that this was an issue in the campaigns and I can't refute that because in all my years of playing Heroes, I've never once finished a campaign. That said, there were never any game enders in the scenario maps on H5 that I ever encountered. So far in one month and two patches in, I've only been able to finish one skirmish map due to this game either taking over my heroes and then locking up or getting the dreaded Week of Plague bug.
No, this game is unplayable.

Quote: best Heroes music ever
Some of the Heroes IV themes are definitely the best in the series but not all. Most of the terrain themes have one an the same core which is... well, a bit cheap. And the Stronghold town theme is boring as hell, surpassing in this regard even the HoMM III Castle theme which is difficult indeed. I find the Heroes III music to be slightly better overall.

Imo., not having a true Town Portal is one of the things that limits Heroes 5 in becoming as succesfull as Heroes 3. I'm not saying that Heroes 3 implementation of TP was perfect - and I'm certainly not saying that H6 implementation is - but not having a TP at all just means way too much time wasted on running back and forth, and what is worse, it kills the possibility to really play huge epic maps. Not that those maps would ever run on the bugge H5 engine, but ...

Well, one thing is for sure there wasn't so much fleeing and teleporting in H5 as it is in H6. It's as if like they didn't know how to make the AI competitive so instead they just make it able to flee easily. Cause when they do stay and fight it's always a total disaster for them.
The game feels challenging only in the hunting them down part. Some weaklings that all they can do is run from you, and it's all over for them when you catch them.

H5 adventure AI was pretty terrible in beginning.
First impressions depend on whether one starts with campaigns, single-player skirmish maps or multi-player.
Since I start out with single-player skirmish maps (& spend the vast majority of my time in this part anyway), I can see how the gameplay/AI feels.
I personally agree with KingImp. H5 didn't feel as frustrating for me because no offline disadvantages & creature abilities/hero specialties/luck mostly worked; but importantly also because I thought they might learn from previous experience & make H6 release better
But H4 release was still the worst for me so I am grateful
It's funny how thread has become discussion of which game is worse at release, but that is very fitting for the title of this thread too

Can't support you here, Heroes 4 is a descent Heroes game, actually it IS my favorite and I still play it now and than - even the campaigns which with the help of the campaign editor tool (fan created) I edit and replay different styles (Equilibris + my mods installed) and me and my friends have a lot of fun playing together. I can live with repetetive town structures on all terrains and the mods tweaked the unit balance enough so no overpowered towns or units. The skill system is the best Heroes series had (I rate slightly bellow H5 TotE skill system simply because it is very far away from the original Heroes skill system and it resembles the feats of a RPG game - not that I don't like RPGs - this is my favorite genre - but because of the personal style Heroes series have in this. The story beats all other Heroes games and the music is addictive. The battles are much more complex than Heroes 5/6 because of the larger field and the simulatanious attacks (I really love these different levels of counter-attack).
I am very curious how all whiners that bashed Heroes 4 back in time are taking Heroes 5 and 6 now. Oh, I know, I was reading the bug list on this forum and I was reading other forums that rate heroes 6 as boring and plain.
