A lot of people are of the opinion that 4 has the best campaign stories.
The campaigns are cool, but the finish when loosing is a let down. I mean, I can't be the only one who was wildly turned on by the loosing epilogue beheading in heroes 3 as well as the corpse in a cage in heroes 2?
Edit:
@Kodial
You mean hell on Earth right? Why shouldn't there be a version of hell on other worlds as well, when there, after all, not only is life, but intelligent beings (comparing aliens to hell creatures). I really like the way the might and magic universe works. There are medivial lore, but we don't have to just accept the world as it is, it's actually explained why some are out to destroy the world, why there is magic in the first place and why the world as it is, even exists, with angels, devils, dragons, titans, etc.
I mean surely, the world is already awesome without an explanation behind it and it's easy to just accept it as it is, because it's so very well made. I however find it to be like extra strawberry topings, when they actually add lore, which not only explain the world in a way that actually make it possible, but also add to the universe in an extreme degree and allow for a ton of stuff to be added without ruining the lore of the world. Too bad though that they have, as I see it, just repeated the same concept which worked well for the earlier incanations of the game (heroes 2 and heroes 3), and for me, it's like rereading the exciting introduction about a field of study I find very interesting again and again and again.., without having the option to actually get to the meat.

The demons in Doom, came from Hell. And they got nothing to do with aliens. The Kreegans were extra-terrestrials demon-wannabe's, a disgrace to both aliens and demons everywhere.

Quote: Yes, if sticking to the spirit of MM and shrugging a fantasy cliché is flawed, I'll take flawed junk any day.
Shrugging a cliché? Are you kidding me? Heroes 3 is the most standard fantasy game I can think of, they made almost nothing different from standard lore. Heroes 6 has Radiant Glories, Tormenters, Breeders, Maniacs, Lamasu, Fate Spinners and Kappas, which is about as many new units they could put in while keeping the mandatory old units, and not putting so many units in the game that it just becomes army. The only units in heroes 3 which weren't cliché were the Serpent Fly, and Gorgon! And you are completely missing my point, which is that people have selective memories of things in their past as being good or bad, and forget details that go against it. People love heroes 3 as much as they do because it was a part of their childhood, and while it was a great game (still the best in the series, of course), they give no credit to Ubisoft for what they do.

You will notice that he mentioned MM and not HOMM. There used to be a difference.
Quote: mandatory old units
This they did not. Where's the black dragons & titans for instance?
Quote: Serpent Fly, and Gorgon
Flying serpents and catoblepi are actually pretty common in fantasy games.
Quote: They give no credit to Ubisoft for what they do.
It's not all about being original, the execution is important as well.
Getting rid of recycled units and giving the New & Original inferno units better names would be a start.

Presumably the first expansion pack will be the war of ashes and add normal and dark elves, and along with them green/gold, and red black dragons. Hopefully they will bring back academy and along with that titan.
Also you only futhered my point that Heroes 3 was fairly cliché.
Please tell me you don't think the game is significantly better or worse based on the names of the units. If you have to complain, complain about balance or few maps coming with the game.

So what? At least it didn't straight-up plagiarize a well-known tabletop miniature wargame.
Quote: Please tell me you don't think the game is significantly better or worse based on the names of the units.
That is but one reason, and it's not even the top of the iceberg, so to speak.
Besides, how would I properly judge balance when I don't even own the game?

Despite having mentioned the alien demons in the first place, I don't think you understand what I'm talking about. Let me make a quote from Avirosb which sums it up:
Quote: Heroes games were best when they actually paid tribute to mythology.
M&M games were best when they turned those myths upside down.
Nowadays it's just generic fantasy trash

You'd maybe be surprised about how often exactly that happens on online talks.

IMO the truth of the matter is that people's preferences are a matter of individual tastes, and that old cliche of 'you can not please everyone all the time' really is true.
I only got to the HOMM series at initial release of #3 because I was looking for a game like Microprose's Master of Magic. I have enjoyed every version since then, but for different reasons. I have also had my gripes with every single one -so I really do not have a favorite.
It is kind of ironic that I didn't participate in the HOMM6 beta test because I refused to pay in advance to do free testing for a game, yet I find that is exactly what I wound up doing anyway for the release version. I find new bugs every day.
Some folks in this thread have brought up Blizzard as an example of 'how to do things right'. Well, as someone who has been an alpha tester for them for the past few years I can tell you that their games have lots of bugs still by the time they go out for testing. Blizzard has just in general had the time, resources, and inclination to deal with most of them before a game goes live... while maintaining good communications with their consumer fanbase in the process. Although that has started to slip noticeably ever since Activision bought them out and now is the one calling the shots.
As far as HOMM6 goes: I like the direction of most of the changes, I seriously hate how buggy it is. I guess that I was lucky to have avoided most of the bugs in v3, 4 and 5 of the series but I can't avoid those in 6.
My room mate and I bought this one on release, and we have had to advise our other friends and online gaming group buddies to stay away until these bugs are fixed.

I was mostly annoyed because I can't even think of a way to express is any clearer. People remember Heroes 3 being better than it was. It is just how the mind works, you remember the good parts and not that bad parts. And then they both go and reply that they remember it being good, somehow responding to my comment without the concept entering their brains. Heroes 3 had plenty of balance problems when it very first released, and there have been plenty of improvements to the series since then. Heroes 3 had incredibly annoying things like month of annoying creature and no caravans. The AI was TERRIBLE. It was psychic: it would base it's decisions off of what you were doing in areas that it had not explored. If you ended a turn with your heroes movement path attacking them they would run away, but if you ended the turn the same way with your hero running away they would attack you. Hell, before the third patch they used to charge units into the moat before the castle walls were even down.
Quote: You'd maybe be surprised about how often exactly that happens on online talks.
Edit: Isn't it usually called a straw-man argument?
No, a straw man argument is if one attacks the person arguing, e.g. you are wrong because you are stupid; the argument stands independent of the person making it. I'm just annoyed that people are judging Heroes 6 against their memories of Heroes 3, while only remembering the most glorious parts of it.

@Avirosb, I'm dissatisfied with AI but it looks like I'm in a minority that plays heroes offline mainly single-player as a TBS. [which others (like avalon) can't seem to see other people's points of view just like his first post in the thread about having all heroes available as starting choice]...because of limited budget I suppose, the move is now towards adventure/rpg (heck in an online game site I bought stuff from before, H5 was in the category of RPG, not strategy)
@Miru, maybe you really shouldn't have mentioned the aliens as the main example of the H3 flaws then...some other examples were much more illustrative
& straw man argument: Offs is more correct, but I don't think it was a straw man argument because you mistakenly misinterpreted rather than intentionally (I can't believe Offs's making more sense now & not deleting his posts & is sometimes funny)

So i should clap when people pirate the game and make workarounds so that people who pirate the game can have their dynasty heroes / weapons.
I am probably in the bottom 20% of worst internet in the country and i have not disconnected from the nexus once. i oppose any and all drm workarounds, why? U ask me, becouse i would like to see a Heroes 7 one day. or atleast expantions for this one.
