Heroes V with TotE was really, really good.
If H7 would play like H3 did, then people would be disappointed.

Tried Quantomas Eternal Essence version? It should fix that.
H5 (tote) gets my vote because it's got the best game design. Hopefully one day, Quantomas and the team will have the game fixed and in the shape it deserves.

i voted HOMM 4 !!!
i just love that game!!!
it has many strong points that are personally important for me!!
the atmosphere , interface, stroryline.. i admire that in H4..
i had a lot of fun making my own maps and playing them with my friends!
HoMM 3 is amazing as well though!!!
HoMM 5 was good, but the campaign is a joke, and design is too childish..

The best version is, technically, H4. It provided the most varied experience, every comparable to a CRPG, actually.
My favorite edition is H5, but only with TotE, otherwise it's painfully average. Hence my vote went to my second favorite edition, H2

Well, the best gameplay had heroes 5 (they improve almost all aspects of game compared to h3). The only thing i didn't like was the cartoony art style, little confusing camera in underground and waiting for computer to play. But somehow i played it only few months, and never again. I play heroes 3 still after all this years, and i still am not bored, so i voted heroes 3. Also if i count mods, then the best game is without doubt heroes 3 wog. But I would vote for heroes 3 and heroes 5 as the best heroes games.

Heroes 3, but Heroes 5 was pretty close. What a shame that they did not keep the core of H5 when developing H6.

For me the game that was, is, and most probably will always be the best is heroes II.
It had good and working mechanics. Very divers and unique factions, that were not that streamlined like in later games. Fast and addictive gameplay and an atmosphere that could not be matched by any of those that came later.

-Heroes 3, considering the whole together. It has the highest replayability value, a wonderfull gameplay, beautiful design and (without conflux) nice factions. It is especially good, imo, considering the time it came out. However, others hsould be mentioned as well:
-Heroes 4. I think H4 contributed quite much in gameplay - but it was sadly poorly done. the factions were far from perfect, and the whole game had the feeling of "wanting, but not being able to", many things could have been good, but were made bad.
-Heroes 5 was superior to H3 in most gameplay aspects. However, the campaigns, the design and, to me, the whole setting, have drawn it down. Thus it can not reach the heights of H3.
I think H2 deserves mentioning as well, because it had a wonderfull atmosphere and was the waymaker for the latter games and especially H3!

I'm inclined to go with Heroes IV. Yes, it dropped the ball on many areas, especially balance, but at the same time, it implemented a great many features I felt were extremely interesting. The hero mechanics are, in my opinion, among the best in the series. Having a hero as an active unit worked extremely well, as long as you knew what you were doing even only slightly. The skill system was fine, though pushing it from the classic "basic-advanced-expert" and adding two more ranks might've been overdoing it, but that's why they added so many skill increase structures and objects, I suspect. Then there's the addition of Caravans. Oh wonderful, wonderful caravans. I was so sad to hear that in V they'd discontinued their existence, and so happy when they re-implemented them in Hammers of Fate. I also adored the storyline of the original, though the expansions shall not be named in that regard... The combination of the new aspects, and the much later released equilibris mod/patch makes it one of the most replayable heroes games for me.
Given that I am primarily a single player gamer who lives for the stories and the gameplay, I think second place goes to Heroes II - I've always enjoyed the gameplay of that game (plus it was my first Heroes game ), and I still quite like the storyline, relatively simplistic as it was.
Heroes III comes after that, for having a great storyline (though I feel it fell apart in the expansions a bit. Armageddon's Blade was great, but Shadow of Death felt a bit too repetitive and predictable to me). The music was brilliant, and I liked the creature system. The only reason Heroes II beats this one is, I suspect, because I played Heroes II first. Whoo nostalgia bonus points!
Heroes V is up next, and this, to me, is where the series took a bit of a downturn. While the gameplay was fine, brilliant in places even, with a fairly well-developed skill system, fun spells, a working battle-system, and a modicum of balance (admittedly, after two expansions and a bunch of patches, but that aside). I greatly enjoyed playing through it. Sadly, the storyline is one of the worst I've seen in years. I could predict what was going to happen to Isabel from the start, every dramatic turn wasn't, and the voice acting was, over-all, subpar at best. And really, Isabel is probably the single stupidest lump of meat to be blessed with a mouth in known history.
Finally, we have last place (note that I'm discounting Heroes I in this lineup, given that I barely played it, and as such cannot really assign it a place in my personal list), which goes to Heroes VI. There's no denying that it has potential, and I concur that Heroes V had similar issues at launch, apparently (I never had issues with it, but it was a fair while ago for me, so it could be that it's just receded in memory). Heroes VI suffers from a multitude of faults. The enormous amount of bugs goes without saying, and is a temporary problem, hopefully. However, I felt the storyline wasn't really any stronger than that of Heroes V. The second his Arch-angelness appeared at the end of the tutorial missions (minor spoiler, I suppose, but still), I could practically predict the rest of the storyline involving that git. The music, I felt, was quite good, if limited, though I quite enjoyed hearing some classic tunes again, I do agree that just remixing them is a bit of a poor showing. Gameplay-wise, I don't really like it either. This is of course my own opinion, and should in no way be taken as stated fact, but I feel that the battle system is severely limited, I dislike the reduction of available resources, and I'm not overfond of the control point system, though I can see where it has potential. Finally, the singularly, absurdly, absolutely, astonishingly atrocious DRM system. UPlay adds features. Yup, including unplayability the second UbiSoft cocks up (see yesterday's entire day, for example), and a great many issues. I couldn't even run the Conflux's built-in skype system because the second I even went near that button, the game crashed. At least they fixed that now, I'll give 'em that.
Dear me, this turned into a full-blown rant on the best AND worst Heroes games for me. Oh well, at least I had fun writing it.

The poll here says they have the fan base of same size and H6 is still without expansion.
