The HC Project
This is a lil' game I've been playing around with. Unfortunately, like all novice game creators I started out with way too big ambitions.
Turns out game development takes a lot of fricking time, I've been working on this for 20 days and managed to create about 40 minutes of gameplay. My trial for the game-dev tools is running out soon and I don't feel like paying for them, so this will remain unfinished.
As it is now, it's simply a demo of what could've been a much larger game, but it's fully playable and I hope someone enjoys it. Most of all I'm hoping that it effing works *shudders*. It's my first game ever so be nice.
Features.
- 3 classes to choose from!
- Explore Heroes Community gone fantasy!
- Meet fellow members of HC, perhaps even yourself!
- And ****, I'm not even demanding payment.
- Jesus effing christ I can't believe I spent this much time on something for free.
- You should all be fricking thankful.
- Shut up and play.
Screenshots.
Helpful gameplay notes:
- At character creation, use a unique name. You are roleplaying a newbie, and since there's a chance of you encountering yourself it's for the best!
Otherwise it's like, time paradox and ****, divided by zero and imploding universes, you don't want that.
- Game controls are: Arrow keys for movement, Enter for selection and Escape for opening and going back in menus. F1 opens up the launcher options.
- The letters after the equipment names tell you which class(es) the equipment can be used by.
- Gameplay is designed for zero level grinding, you will always be just strong enough to survive.

Been thinking about doing something like that a while back, but decided that it would take too much of an effort.
Let's see what we got here.

RPG Maker VX right? Hm... you know we could make this a community project and have members of the community pass around the game data and gradually "improve" it using their trial times until it is a complete game. =)
Just an idea.

Thank you so very much Adrius! It's incredibly awesome you invested your creativity for our leasure and for free even! I think you can be really proud of this accomplishment of yours!
The game demo is really well made (so far) and if you ever feel like making anything else, I'm sure it'll be super!
Okay, I've started, but I'm not very far yet. Trying to explore everything, I've met Joonas already.
**COMMENTS**
Music -
Main Menu: Good choice! Give a nostalgic game boy like feel of childhood, like when you're sitting comfortable in the living room and enjoying the sun light while playing. The music creates a positive and happy kind of atmosphere.
Intro: Nice dark cosmic music, it makes the game look epic with the combination of music and background!
Witch tower: Haha, the piano is awesome.
Gameplay -
Intro: Newcomer Morph has been born! I choose wastelander for him.
Glade: Trying to find my way through the witch tower, so Joonas will be my pal. I found the secret room, destroyed the undead (and had some battle experience wuh!) and now I've exploded my way into the secret room. I even found a sirious sword!
Though, I can't seem to find the witch/healer. Joonas just says there is bound to be some clues, but so far it looks like Joonas won't be my pal.
I'm gonna take a break now, but I look forward to play on. So far you've avoided a lot of the "stupid" errors published and well beta'ed games seem to make. I really look forward to continue my quest and am a bit sadden that this will only be a demo, I can't wait to see what else you've come up with.
Again, thank you so much, it's stuff like this that makes heroes community not only unique but among the best communities in the world!

Played it. Finished it. And there was much rejoicing.
Won't mention any names, but I loled at the little flying demon near the end.
P.S. QP the man right the **** now.
P.P.S. I'm all for making this a joined project. How do we organize this?

Yeah, sure. Passing the thing around and using up a sequence of trial times is neat.
...or you could pick a proper, free program like Game Maker 6.1 and make any kind of game you want instead of the fill-in-the-blanks mockery of the RPG Maker brand

Yay, so happy that people are enjoying it!

Yeah maybe, I made some last minute adjustments to him because during balance testing the Other Sider owned him so fricking hard. I needed him to be stronger than the previous battle without being annoying, so I simply combined the HP and well... he got tanky.
If his Genocide Slash doesn't hit your healer and you've got Magic Water left, he's pretty easy.

Hmm... yeah maybe... not sure who I'd trust with my baby game
RPG Maker VX is easy to create stuff in, but it's still got a learning curve. You do need to dedicate yourself a bit.
I think this could work well if we make sure that we always finish what we wanted to do, that is, not handing over a half-finished realm to another creator. You know, so the next person can start his work without worrying too much about what all these left-over scripts are and stuff.
Also, for the gameplay to stay good we'd have to be consistent with the style.
If anyone's interested, do tell.

Yes. Was fun, although I'm not sure that was the right character for the story.

I think the main problem with continuing on this would be the basis itself. However awesome your additions are they'll still be limited by my own faulty gameplay design.
This primarily started out as a fun thing that I did for myself, but like with everything I do I can't simply let things stay small, I expand and expand until I don't even know anymore.
One of the issues concerns the multiple classes and player Stats growth. For a long game, my system wouldn't work very well because the stat growth between the classes are exactly the same. This means that a Wastelander will have the same Mind growth as an Altarist.
I can change the classes and names with scripts, but I couldn't change the parameters used to determine stat growth.
I planned to solve this by making the player's stats primarily defined by his equipment rather than his class. It's still a shortcut that doesn't really solve the problem, and looking back it would've been a much better choice to simply have one class (especially for balance testing... holy **** that got annoying after about 20 playthroughs...).
I'd rather encourage people to create their own game rather than building on top of mine. Much easier.
Perhaps a story in the same world at the same time, but with different characters and in a different location? Could weave it into my story without having to deal with my scripts.
EDIT:
@Geny: Maybe, I needed a veteran that likes to talk about the old days
@Bak: It tells you to come back with the right numbers. Maybe I missed a moment of hilarity there... could've thrown the player into the void or something if he got them wrong ^^
