maybe initially they wanted 2 types of resources that would kind of echo the whole blood/tears system, in that there's a tears blue resource (crystal) and a blood red one (say, ruby). But then maybe they couldn't get it to work properly, or at least not in time (for whatever reason) so they cut one and added blood to the crystals.
'cause you have to admit, for blood crystals, they don't look very bloody. Then again the dragon veins are clear blue too, so there's still an explanation for it.

It is a level 15 skill that shows for sure 3 resources. The fourth one cannot be anything else. I mean... it is a resource, it is red, and opposed to crystals...
Blood crystal is just a name for it. It is a fourth resource that UBI tried and I find it sad that is is gone  .

Well, think about the uproar that was caused when they got rid of Gems, Mercury, and Sulfur.
Now think of what would have happened if they not only got rid of those three, but then added a new completely unprecedented resource.
Blood diamonds, indeed.

Actually would have made things a LOT easier for them.
The guys wanting 7 resources would not have been so pissed off because 4 is better than 3. And the guys that now want an extra resource would have had 0 reasons to whine about.

I'm not sure it's actually a ressource. It looks like ... a hand? Albeit a very red one (demonic?), but if certainly looks like a fist seen from the inside of the hand, with the thump on the right side (facing towards the viewer). And then there's something behind, which is roughly in the shape of an axehead?

I'm stone cold dead sober and I would agree with Alci here. It looks like some hand-like thing with an axehead. It would take a lot of Wishful Thinking to see diamonds in that, even uncut ones. (nothing personal krs)
I think it plausible that there was once an idea of a fifth rescource, but it got cut before the final version. And the idea that one was linked to Tears and the other to Blood seems plausible as well. However that image is sufficiently blurry to not be able to tell what the hell that is.
Personally, I see no need for another contrived rescource. And as I stated in the Wishlist a while back, I actually consider every rescource that Heroes has or has had in the past that are not Wood, Ore or Gold rather contrived. Especially since none of them has any productive or constructional use. Also, I disagree strongly with those who say that balance depends on the number of rescources and that the addition of x rescources will make things more ballanced. When it comes to ballancing rescources, it is a cost-reward equation. The number of variables is of less consequence than the lopsidedness of that equation.

Maybe the name that sticked in my head for a fifth resource blood oriented (Blood Diamonds) is not the greatest one. But if in that picture there isn't a rare resource blood oriented I really need to see a doctor .
In my "defense":
- It is an icon for skill about resources
- There are only resources in the picture
- ore opposed to wood and crystal opposed to ... something red
- they got rid of the icon sometime in the beta and replaced it with the current one
- the skill was so powerful they considered it should be available from level 15
- if I were to make a resource out of blood I would give it the same roundy coagulated looks.
Yet 2 people keep telling me there is a hand with an axe.... 3 more like you and I go see the doctor .

I suspect that until some point close to beta they have toyed with an extra blood resource. And in the light of this, why never ever admit it? Say something like: we tried it was supposed to work like this but we found out it was total bullsnow.
What they say now is only 8 resources crap 5 resources good. Not a mention about a more convenient middle way 6.
