This is the 7th time I do this battle, twice due to the game crashing randomly, and the rest cause the game keeps setting the battle timer to 20min. BUT, I finally managed to do it perfectly:
(When I took the screen shot the game quit, so cherish this for I'm going to go commit suicide)

Back to Shogun 2 fall of the samurai, thus far all is going well, but started off extremely hard, I mean my line infantry caused severe casualties, however they could only get off one volley before the enemy reaches them for melee, in which they are next to useless, anyway after much initial anguish I set up a professional army then disbanded most of it when peace set in, now I have a policy of quality over quantity, so I hired some French foreign legionnaires armed with chassepot bolt action rifles. (you can only recruit 3 max) I sent these guys to crush an island nation who's been raiding my trade routes, seeing how its a one settlement clan I expected there to be little resistance, when I found a solid army waiting for me I gawked, but pressed on never the less. Now, I've never tested my French guys so I didn't know what they could do, but the battle was more of a slaughter fest rather than a battle, mostly since my artillery decimated enemy formations and their flankers were shot down swiftly before they could do devastating damage.
Here's a screen shot of the end results, and here's the replay if any of you are interested.

I bought napoleon total war, urgh 12gb download. I also just bought Rome 2 total war (don't like preordering it too early, just like a week before release for the extra goodies and early play) but I bought a hard copy, I am not going through the agony of so many massive downloads, Shogun 2 was 30+ gb. (it downloads all the dlc as well, even if you don't own it)

The local retailer sells Rome II for some 45 euro (including the Greek Cities pack) while the digital pre-order is 55 euro... It was a tough decision.

Just had the most pleasing battle yet. Started a new Campaign as the Brits. Went to capture Dublin, had four units of spearmen and, including my general, two units of cavallery. Enemy had 5 units of spearmen and 3 units of archers.
I marched all my spearmen to his front, created a half circle with wide-spread lines. My cavallery ran around and took out his archers almost immediately. Then they turned around and went at the spearmen from behind. Battle ended in less than two minutes, I'd lost 26 soldiers, he'd lost 300. Felt so damn good.

How come nobody is screaming "ROME 2!!! YAAAAAAAARRRRRRGHHHH!!!" and goes crazy with hype?
I was there at release (9AM here) and got it ready to play as quickly as I could and managed to start an Iceni campaign (on easy ) and quickly conquered my first settlement before I had to go somewhere.

I have not had any issues with graphics but despite playing on highest(probably), I am not impressed by the details. Not any better than Shogun 2 at all as far as I can tell.

Are you kidding me? Slaves have a serious detrimental effect on public order, they're slaves for crying out loud and they ought to make peeps happy.
Also something's up with auto battles, I have like 300 men on my ships and the enemy has 500 and the battle is in my favor 9/1, but when I fight the battle I get my ass handed to me since I ain't fighting a mob, but formidable enemy forces. While on the topic of ships, I ****ing love naval battles, the sound of rowers heaving in the hull as my general gives a speech gave an epic feel.

The campaign map looks WAY better than in Shogun 2. The battle map is another story - there isn't much improvement there indeed. On the other hand, the animations are now smoother and when you zoom in on the units, the details are quite nice. But why the hell did they have to replace the portraits of the characters with generic animated "talking busts"?!

I have only lightly played Rome 2, just to get a feel for the game and some of the groundworks, but don't intend to start a serious game till Amazon finally sends my Greek pack code , Athens all the way, can't wait to become a dictator of the Athenian people.
Also @Zeno
In Shogun 2 the combat animations were fantastic, a lot of mini 1v1s with sexy kill moves. (especially with the "blood" dlc that unlocks dismemberment effects) Not that I think that Rome 2 is lacking, to be honest I haven't seen much, particularly love the projectiles as they impale their victims or get stuck in shields.

Battle animations in Shogun 2 seemed a bit "wooden", so to speak, while in Rome 2 they look more natural.

After making sure I had extreme graphics on I must repeat how disappointing (but smooth working) the graphics were after having seen high detailed cinematic roman faces months before release. I am by no means a graphic snow and gameplay comes before graphics but I had expectations that it would at least look better than or at least equally good as Shogun on highest.

I have to say after haven taken a closer look, the melee combat animations are just absolutely awful. Like robots they just make attacks against each other and they do not feel alive at all. In vanilla Shogun it was the other way and the fights were overdramatic duels but Darthmod Shogun is probably the best among both vanilla Shogun and Rome when it comes to combat.

Make sure to send Elvin to a labour camp. Why? Just cause...

Got the key late last night and began immediately, I burned Cyprus to the ground and I got tight with the Spartans by mutilating my defeated foes. (they got some kind of sexual gratification out of it I guess)
One small problem though, I supplemented my army with extremely cheap but effective mercenaries (thinking that CA are dumb) and I had to hire an entire fleet of mercenaries after my original fleet was destroyed. (I was besieging a town from both land and sea, but somehow the entire garrison just attacked my fleet and for some reason my land army wasn't in the reinforcements) Anyway, the problem was that though mercs have tiny recruitment prices they cost a ****ton to maintain, which I didn't realize till my economy was driven into the ground.

Mercenaries do indeed have crazy upkeeps so I guess they are only meant as emergancy/expendable troops. Sparta seems pretty worthless though to me. No sword infantry at all and even Spartan Royals and Heroes gets easily butchered by elite sword infantry. The other two DLC factions do not look very good either but Macedon looks very solid and their Royal Peltasts should be able to crush greek Hoplites without effort. Poor Elvin is doomed to have his homeland destroyed by sword using barbarians or romans.
