Might and Magic VII Take 2 — IC

All:

The first thing you are aware of is a crushing cold. The next is that you can't breath, and you're surrounded on all sides by water. A few desperate moments later you manage to surface, to see a moonless sky above you and dark waves all around.

A few heads bob in the surf as others surface, disturbing bits of rotting flotsam floating on the tide. You have no idea how you got here, or where here is.

((Let the game begin. ))

Bowie opened his eyes and saw something he never dreamt of - his green hands on his green body. Just a second after that, he realised that he's swimming in water.

"WHAT!", Bowie shouted in shock, "Why am I green? Why do I feel strange? Where am I?"

So many questions, no answers...

Bowie managed to stay on the surface and regain his balance on water. "Now, let's see what is going on here..."

At first Broïndur thought he was being dunked into a bucket of water to arrouse him from his sleep. On night were he had been drinking heavily, his commander found that to be the only way to wake him up. And he had been drinking last night, Broïndur and his comrades-in-arms had succesfully beaten back an Orc attack on the pass once again and they had been celebrating.
But it did not take Broïndur long to realise that he was bobbing underwater entirely. His mind raced. The first lake to be found near the lands of the Lorimbur was at least 20 leagues into Idoslân and he would not have stumbled that far if he had been drunk enough to get it into his mind to go there. And the Waterreservoirs were to heavily guarded, even at night, to stumble into there unnoticed. It was also strange that his heavy armour was not dragging him down.
But first things first, his lungs were burning for air and he had to swim to the surface if he did not want to drown. As a rule, Dwarves hated swimming and Broïndur was no exception. But with a few strokes of limbs that felt entirely too long, he reached the surface and gulped the crisp air greedily.
Once he caught his breath, Broïndur noticed a few Human heads and flotsam bobbing around him. But he had other things to worry about, getting out of this water chief among them. It was no secret that the Goddess of Water, Sitallia did not tolerate the creations of the Dwarf-God Vraccas in her realm and she would drag them to her depths out of spite. And she made no distinctions between the Dwarf-tribes, so Broïndur being a Thirdling would make no difference. His instinct told Broïndur that the shore was nearest to his right, so he made for it as fast he could. Admittedly he began to panic a bit, it would not be long before Sittalia would notice him and drag him to the depths. So panicked was he in fact, that he did not notice his too long limbs were green or that the other people around him were clamouring.

Fandral wakes abruptly and gasps for air to no avail, his body guides him to the surface, to which he swam with all his strength. Fandral pierced the veil of the ocean surface, and after gasping several lungfuls of air, he looked up at sky and wondered if he had fallen overboard, again. He took few short glimpses at the other individuals wading nearby, but took little overall notice of them. (he was just waiting for his companions to realize what had happened and come to his rescue, afterall this is neither home nor a world region that's familiar)

Rincewind gulped for air. He had no idea where he was or how he got there. This was not unusual for him. It still freaked him out. He looked around and saw other people in the water. hat freaked him out even more. It's not that Rincewind was unsociable, it's just that from his experience most people are not to be trusted and best avoided unless necessary. He couldn't spot any land close by, so he grabbed himself a piece of wood and started slowly wading away from the crowd.

The Genie shot up in the water, glancing around wildly. His face felt odd, as did... what in the-he was a-where-

For the firs time in, quite possibly, ten thousand years, the Genie was lost for words. And little wonder. The last he remembered, he had been journeying through a desert, with no water around for miles. The last he remembered, he had been a genie, not a-a... how in the Cave of Wonders did he become a human? And what was with this tasteless garb and staff? It was so ugly. Hesitantly extending a hand, semi-remembering how Aladdin used to swim, he tried paddling toward the other people, and slowly moved forward. What in the world was going on?

Those of you looking around notice a dark shape near the horizon, nearly invisible in the night except for a few flickering golden lights. Careful observation reveals it to be moving at a stately glide, so it isn't land.

Mathirim Cauthon tried to open his eyes and found, much to his surprise, that this caused a horrendous stinging to burn in his one good eye and in the empty socket of his left. He gasped out, losing most of the air he had in his lungs. Desperately, the man began to claw at the water. Hadn't there been a glimmer of light over there? Yes! There! Clenching his eye shut, Mat pushed himself towards the light.

By the time his face broke the surface, Mat had taken in one strangled gasp of water, which had filled his burning lungs with an almost gleeful eagerness, Cauthon could Bloody swear... He clutched at the closest thing his hands could find, coughing, choking and struggling to stay on the surface. Mat happened to grab his hat. It was a good hat. Unfortunately, it wouldn't keep Mat Cauthon from drowning in the bloody flaming sea, now would it? He grabbed the next item, and discovered that it was his spear. Only slightly more helpful, since its shaft was made of apparently very buoyant wood. It started sinking as soon as Mat grabbed it.

Not willing to let either of his possessions go, Mat looked around and finally found something that he could hold on to. The man was green, poor fellow had probably been dead at Sea for a while, and he seemed to be floating quite well for himself. On reflection, Mat realized that a rotting body would most likely reek something fierce, and he decided to grab a much closer piece of flotsam instead. Throwing his spear and arms on top of the log proved a bit difficult as his red coat pulled at Mat's arms, but he was able to manage the feat after a difficult second or so.

When he had removed most of the water and caught his breath, Mat began to wonder where he was. "Now this isn't Caemlyn..." he muttered, "If Grady bloody messed up after doing so bloody well with those gateways, then he better have a flaming good reason for dropping me in the bloody ocean! Blood and bloody ashes, a bloody ocean filled with bloody corpses!" He hadn't realized that he was on a different world at all, and that Bowie was not actually dead. He also hadn't spotted anyone else, as his eye still burned from being opened in water.

Tristan was gazing upon Earth, Yvaine looking upon the world not too great a distance away from him. Both of them were shining brightly in the planet’s night sky when, suddenly, one dimmed out of view.

Tristan found he was no longer in the deep darkness of space, but now in the not so deep darkness of lots of water. This was a strange feeling for Tristan. He had not touched water for… Well, he couldn’t even guess how long it was. A few hundred years, at least, back when he was human. The realization that he was in need of breath hit him a few moments later, and he ascended to the surface as quickly as he could manage. That need was another thing he had grown unaccustomed to.

After he hit the top, Tristan looked to the night sky. He scanned it thoroughly, searching for any sign of Yvaine, with nothing as a result. He couldn’t even identify any of the other stars in the sky. All were unfamiliar to him, and they were all so silent. To add to it all, the moon was missing. Where had it gone?

Tristan eventually looked down, noticing the others floating in the water. He couldn’t make them all out, but none of them seemed to be Yvaine. He spun around, trying to see if she was floating behind him, but couldn’t find her.

“Y-Yvaine?” he managed to get out, after a wave of water crashing into his mouth as he began calling out her name. He received no response in return. He tried a couple more times, with the same result.

He was alone. Sure, he had all these other people around him, but none of them was Yvaine. His gaze went back to the night sky as he drifted there. He stared at it, hoping somehow it would change back to how it should be, and him being a part of it with Yvaine once more.

More nothing. No changes from his current state.

With a heavy sigh, his head lowered back to a point where he could see the water. Though, with the view of the water, he saw lights in the distance. Perhaps Yvaine had come to this confusing place as well, and this was her signaling him? He didn’t have much hope for such a fortuitous event, with all that had been going on so far, but he decided he may as well go for it, just in case.

Using the wooden shield he had for whatever reason, Tristan paddled his way over to the lights.

Bowie grabbed a nearby peice of floating wood. "Better to save my strenght here in case I need it."

He noticed the lights and he also noticed people swimming towards it.

"WAIT!", Bowie shouted, "It might be a trap! We should better wait for the day."

He hoped that someone would listen to him.

Swimming to where he thought land was supposed to be, Broïndur noticed some light in the corner of his left eye. It must be a ship, but every instinct Vraccas had blessed him with screamed that was the wrong way. Ships were just a way to postpone Sitallia's Wrath, since they sink all to easy when the the Goddess feels like it. Yet his rational voice kept insisting that is was safer to go to a ship he could see, than to a shore he only imagined to be there. Besides if Sitallia would have wanted to drown him today, she would likely have done so by now. But as mercurial as she was, that was only as good as it lasted.
Still, Broïndur's ratio won the argument and he turned to swim towards the light. Again he noticed how his limbs felt entirely too long and that his beard, the one he was so proud of, felt gone. When he would get his hands on the cretins who had shaven him, they would rue the day they had decided on the worst idea of their lives. A shaven Dwarf was a Dwarf banished, a Dwarf who had lost his honor. And Broïndur had done nothing to deserve such a fate.
As he swam, Broïndur silently prayed to Vraccas to keep him safe until he reached land.

Fandral was lost in thought and memory when he felt movement around him, he noticed that the creatures around him were paddling toward some light in the distance, after a quick glimpse at the night sky (and stars) he decided to follow,

"We're in the same boat afterall" - he chuckled at the notion as he backstroked toward the light.

Afterall there is bound to be a adventure wherever this merry-band of strangers is going.

Mat climbed up on the piece of wood, sitting down and dripping something fierce. In the constant mumbling coming from his mouth one could hear an occasional "bloody" and "flaming," usually in the phrase, "Bloody flaming Aes Sedai with their bloody flaming gateways dumping me in the..." His vision had finally recovered to the point that he could make out the lights. Using the bladed spear as a paddle and setting his soaked hat on his head, Mat moved unsteadily towards the ship on his improvised craft.

Seeing that the others have no interest in him Rincewind relaxed a bit. That is to say that one couldn't play on his nerve strings, but could still very well strangle someone with them. Everyone were moving towards a floating light. It wreaked of excitement, but it was either this or drowning in sea. Rincewind considered his choices. After an intense battle, his reason took the upper hand and he paddled slowly after the rest.

As you approach the shape resolves itself into a ship; a large, sailing ship, with a sleek hull and a spiderweb of masts and sails overhead. The lights prove to be lanterns, and by their illumination you're able to make out some details of the crew—not much, but enough to see most are dark-skinned and none of them are wearing uniforms of any kind. A few of the men on board have drawn bows at your approach, but the attitude of the bowmen suggests this is more a precaution than because they genuinely regard you as a threat; most spare you a few curious looks and continue on with what they were doing. One of the latter peers over the side at you and calls:

"Ahoy down there!"

Drawing closer, you can see he's of a piece with most of the crew; dark with white or near-white hair, clothing respectable but of no style any of you recognizes. But his voice is cheerful enough as he continues:

"What are you doing down there? You don't look like tritons or seamonsters, and if you're pirates you're the most motley bunch I've ever seen."

"Sea folk?" Well, it seemed that despite the bloody Asha'Man and his failure to get Mat where he was supposed to be going, Mat had landed in the hands of some welcome allies! Then again, that ship wasn't as sleek or thin as a Sea Folk vessel... Maybe it was a Seanchan ship? But no... those were basically floating fortresses.

What country had Grady sent him to?

"I should hope I'm no pirate!" Mat yelled up. Though, come to think of it he might make a dashing young pirate with his hat, and he could get a wicked eye patch if he wanted to... that's what Talmanes would buy for him, an eye patch! Let the bloody noble buy him a gift if the man wanted to so badly. "Do you think you could help a stranded adventurer?" It wasn't too much of a lie... Mat was both stranded and an adventurer. No need for other titles that might make these people, if they were pirates, think of holding him for ransom.

There were only two places Broïndur could think of where people had need of ships this big. One was the lake-realm Weyurn, but that was on the other side of the Safe Lands and traveling there would take weeks, if not months. And these people looked nothing like the weather-beaten Weyurners. Not those Broïndur had seen at least, but then again, none of the Humans of the Safe Lands had such dark skin. The other possibility was that he was in the Lands-on-the-Far-Side-of-the-Mountains. The chaotic lands where the spawn of Tion roamed free and safety was unknown. But from what he had learned of the few Human traders from those lands that traded with the Thirdlings, they had no such bodies of water for a great many leagues. So where Broïndur was, was an ever greater mystery.
"Nay, a pirate I am not, of that ye ken be sure. Now, I'm gonna climb aboard your ship here, before Sitallia's spite claims another Dwarf, aye."
And Broïndur started climbing onto the side of the ship.
