Best rank that can be achieved?
Okay, if you are playing on normal what is the best score and rank that is possible in a single scenario? The best I have gotten has been 244 with a crusader rank on normal. To me this does not sound too good but how far away from the top am I? I always take too many days so my score is pretty crappy. Maybe if I know what all the seasoned veterans here got when they played on normal then I will be able to tell how truly lame I am. 
If this topic has already been discussed someone can point me in the right direction. BTW is there a way to search all threads for a particular topic? All advice is welcome!

I think the ArchAngel is the best rank if not it's the Azure Dragons and I'm pretty sure it's almost impossible to get it. I can be wrong though!

Yes, but you can't get Archangel rating while playing a map at 'normal' difficulty - only at impossible!

For most practical purposes, if you beat everyone and get the grail, that would be worth 250 points, and *then* the time it takes reduces your score by about three points a month (depending on the number of towns).
I usually play on 'hard' difficulty (that being the one where AI and Human are closest to equivalent) and get scores around 284.

Well I'm no seasoned veteran but I normally get the stone golem, the Dragon fly or the archmagi
but i only play on normal to get them.

Hehe, just for a change I played the following recently:
Random XL with underground, 3 comp opponents (allied), Impossible setting (200%). I won in month 3 or so, and got 444 Points, rank Archangel

Thanks for all the input. My sister and I kinda suspected that you were limited in rank due to the difficulty rating that you chose. Thanks for the breakdown of the scoring, Dragonsister! I am trying to improve my score. I also need to be brave and try some scenarios on higher difficulty. I just have this thing about getting my butt kicked by the AI! My highest campaign score to date is Wyvern Monarch (1575) for the Armageddon's Blade campaign. I mainly concentrate on finishing the map or campaign and not think too much about what the score will be and how to get the highest. I would like to go back and play some over and see if I can improve my score.

I mainly concentrate on finishing too! Too many good maps on the web to waste time re-playing more than a few. Well, I would say that - I don't have as much time to play HOMM as I would like, and what I *do* have I often spend playing and reviewing usermaps.

That's quite impressive. Do you think it's easier to achieve AA rating playing an XL map than... say a medium map? Or do you think it depends greatly on resources available around starting town?

I'm no specialist for single player maps I must admit. The game I mentionned I got necro, so things were quite easy. After getting 2000 skellies I left them at home tho, lol.
So I think it also depends on the starting town.. I tried that with Tower and it took me some weeks to build Magi, because I didn't find one or two ressources. Of course a larger mapsize is helpful, since u usually got some time to develop there.
Generally, in early phases on impossible settings (ressource scare maps), I would concentrate on key units, like VLords for Necro, Master Gremlins for Tower, Marksmen for Castle etc. to get a good start. But as mentioned above, I'm no specialist here

Yep, its true, you can only achieve higher ranks on high difficulties. Usually I play expert difficulty and get a dread knight or naga queen rank (naga queens really are better than dread knights, if these ranks are anything to judge by ) Just last week, tho, I played 'Rise of the Phoenix' on impossible and got 436, which is an archangel ranking (sorry, don't mean to boast).
Anyway, when you are playing on a high difficulty, its really important to get the town portal spell and advanced/expert earth magic. As soon as i get those two, I know I'm gonna win because I can hoard all my units into one great big army which will crush the AI's split up armies without too many losses.
But the most important thing is not the score but how much you enjoyed the game. Personally, I would rather play a really long game and explore the whole map than take over everybody in the first month or two. Cheers.

Maybe because you can't set the difficulty level in h3 campaigns (at least you can't set this in RoE & AB campaign). So no matter how fast you finish, you can never get high score.
When I play single map with impossible setting, it's not difficult to get archangel ranking. But if I set at expert difficulty, the best I can get is a behemoth ranking.

I'm afraid I can't help you much there Robinhood. It was a map that I downloaded before AB came out.
It was XL with no undergroundand rated Impossible. I cranked up the diff to 200% and beat the thing in 68 days.
I had 7 other opponents.
Let's see.... I was the Necropolis and all of the towns had one of each of their creature generators all grouped together within a day of the town, with the exception of the horde creature generators. They were 2 days away, grouped together, and there were I believe 4 of them.
I had Thant, ex. log, ex. pathfinding, ex. air., ex. earth., and intel. My town gave me d-door and the first castle I took (dungeon) gave me town portal.

morcoz, when you got the high score, did you get the grail, because if you didn't, you could potentially increase your score by 25. Then you'd be over 500

According to the Ranking system Naga Queens are the best level 6 and Behemoths are the worst level 7.

creatures and gold has no effect on your score.
you can basicly say, that 5 things affect your final score:
- difficulty
- days spend
- towns owned
- dug up grail
- defeated all enemies
if you want a really high score, difficulty, grail and defeating all enemies are the important things.
