i like the new system grouping unit was a good idea but like stated it's really about the gap between core/elite/champion maybe upcoming patch will re-balance the numbers it's all about numbers shouldn't be impossible to see in the futur

For me it looks more like people are not disliking the fact that there are 3 tiers,but more the "balance" in heroes VI.
I mean most people complain that the champions are not strong enough this way,but I think they can theoretically be even stronger than in other games with this tier-systems.
I mean if the core-tier is roughly comparable to the 2nd-tier creatures and the elite tier is more like the new tier-5,then there would be an even bigger gap between champions and non champions than in other heroes-games.
So I think the 3-tier-system itself is good,but the way they handled it in H6 wasn't optimal,cores could be a little bit weaker and champs could be stronger.
I am also ok with the idea of 4 tiers,but the synergy between sets of 3 creatures works better in my opinion.
The possibility of having 4 cores and elites and 2 champions to choose from seems also interesting the choices for the cores/elites would probably be always between melee-shooter-flyer-supporter(with some exceptions),but it would be hard to balance.

That's why I prefer a 3/2(3)/1(2) system.
You'd still have 3 cores units for early game, with no choices, making a bit easier balancing the early game. At Elite level, you have to decide which two out of three compose your army, and at Champion level which unit will give your army and edge.
And at the same time keeping a reasonable number of units (eight), so it wouldn't cause a lot of headaches to balance it.

well unlike 'most people' reason i dislike the 3 tiers
is not about the balance,
but rather replayability!!!
at first i found it innovative and logical probably to have 3 tiers But
in practice it turned to slow the game, and make it just plain boring..
i realize that weak magic contributes to that,
but still, 7 tiers was so much more fun to play!
so i believe in future games 7 tiers should be returned to HoMM
