Yeah I remember ordering my first Pizza in Italy, it came with fried egg and tomato slices and that was about it. I kept thinking "these guys invented pizza? Shoot, Bubba at the Dew-Drop-In is more masterful."

About the McBurger Gunner, you might be on to something there. France had a burger-joint called the Love-Burger...I was junk-craving and desperate; didn't help...it was awful, but then again, across the street in a upscale place; they were serving cold fish and charging lots of Francs for the stuff.

Soda, soda pop, pop and soft drink means soft drink
and those are difference sizes: small, medium, large and extra large.
If you don't want ice, you must say to No ice, please.
Non-sugar soft drink is Diet, for example Diet Coke,
(Coca-Cola Light in Europea), Diet Pepsi (Pepsi Light in Europea)
and also get the decaffeinated soft drink.
Tea? If you want ice or hot. You may must say to.
You can get the decaffeinated coffee or tea. You ask for decaf.
Ok about more important alcoholically drinks are beer, white wine, red wine and Scotch.
Ok I quote from the book but better would be Detroit? Fred is boss

I always get sick and tired when people ask me this.

People ask this not because they care, but they want to prejudice against others... Its so obvious, its insufferable.

Strangely I just had a similar discussion with one of US colleagues!

Quote:
1. have you ever been to the united states? how long was the trip, or stay?

Yes, spent 2 weeks in Houston, Texas.

Quote:
2. your likes of the u.s. , as well as dislikes, and WHY, for each statement.

Like:
- Roads - these are really great. In general I think roads have impacted heavily on american lifestyle and values. Literally they reflect an american concept of freedom - choosing direction and going for it. As for Russia, we don't have anything close to such massive infrastructures.
- Nature and wildlife - one of the reasons why it was called New World!
- Museums and attitude to history and scientific knowledge - History, especially US history, is wrapped in reverence and there are plenty of unique things that were preserved with great care. Scientific knowledge is also held in high esteem. Regretfully, same cannot be said about Russia.
- International americans - yes, I tend to distinct these from local americans. Basically these are US citizents that've been in Europe and other countries, and who have any knowlege about other lifestyles. Trust me, they differ a lot from local americans in a good way. They are hard-workers, and tend to be more open-minded and carefree then local americans. Again, in Russia we don't have nothing even close to these people in terms of numbers.

Dislike:
- Materialism&Religious Conservatism - Surprisingly these two produce a strange mix that corrupts american values, turning them into hardline dogmas (make more money and praise Jesus).
- Fast food "Cousine" - Come on, you can't be serious about its quality!
- Ignorance - Most likely it is a byproduct of Materialism&Religious Conservatism. Americans use to view other cultures and lifestyles as inferior or broken in some way. Yes, we have plenty of this stuff here, in Russia.

Quote:
3. what country you currently live in, and what countries you have lived in.

I live in Russia. I lived in Norway (around 2 years), Finland (6 mnth), Sweden and UK (few weeks), and in some other countries (Italy, Latvia, Turkmenistan, Egypt, Cyprus, Azerbaijan) less then 1 week.

Quote:
4. what you liked/disliked about your current country, or any that you have stayed/lived in.

Well, I like my country to such degree that I can live with a million of deficiencies it has.

From a philosophical point of view, roads are actually restricting freedom. Somebody made those roads with the purpose of making you choose one of the roads chosen for you. Without roads, you can go anywhere you want without anyone influencing you.

...So what's the point of all that?  Well, nothing much - and I'm not sure why it's become a focal point of the thread - other than to say that while there's no unified "American cuisine", there's no real unified cuisine of any country we typically think of.  There are regional dishes and cuisine styles everywhere, in the US, Italy, China, whereever....
I hope you don't mind, but I have to disagree a bit here.

There ARE typical dishes for every country, even though there are regional differences. Same like it is with languages. Of course the typical language of Germany is german, you can be sure a guy from the City of Cham (lower bavaria, bavarian forest) seem to speak a mix of american english and chinese, and no other german outside of bavaria will understand a single word.

So the typical italian food IS pasta and pizza, no matter if you have regional differences. Just check the menu card in an italian restaurant: 2 pages (at least) of different pizza, 2 pages (at least) of different pasta, half of a page different meat meals.

And no, , the typical german meat is NOT Kraut (anymore )

@Corribus. I think the point of those who say "there is no American cuisine" means the same as "there is no European cuisine"

It needs to be more spesific when it differs so much from reagion to reagion. There surely is Hawaijian cuisine, Southern cuisine and all sorts of cuisine, but I can't define American cuisine any better than I could European cuisine.

Italian cuisine can be defined, so that example is poor in this regard.

Good ideas soured by moments of idiocy and zealotry. A grand experiment that has, over all, benefited society, but has also given us some of the worst moments in recent memory.

I honestly think the world would be a very different place without the states. They gave us jazz and rock and roll, but also made justin beiber possible. on the other hand, Britain gave the world the beatles, the rolling stones, black sabbath etc, but also gave the world one direction, so meh, take the good with the bad.

Difficult question. My opinion about the USA is quite divided.

On one hand, this country seems to be very modern, freedom loving, full of hard working people who love their family and like to live their life as good as possible.

On the other hand, I think this country has stopped at the middle ages in some points (see below), which is hard to understand and it also seems this country is full of selfish people who mostly look after themselves and only realize they are a nation when it comes to war.

You find anticlimaxes everywhere:

There are tons of successfull and rich people there, but also many people who live below a common western standard level.

The most (successful) porn magazines and porn movies where made  there, but if you see a naked breast on tv, the whole nation starts to panic...

The biggest bank system on the planet is located in the states, on the other hand, many many people still get the money from their job by a bank check and not on a bank account. (You hardly find check paying in any modern western european country anymore....).

A nation is some kind of community. A community only works if everybody plays his role. Some are strong players, others are weaker players. The motto "only the strong survive" is kinda old fashioned and doesn't fit into modern times any longer..

But that's just me....

1. Too far away, also i'm afraid to travel to USA

2. Americans are obese, uneducated (in broad sense) and free to shoot people right on a street.
What I noticed about USA is that it allows smart people to get great education and make career, as wlel as run business for everyone. On the other hand, dumb citizens became dumber and poor - poorer, and this is called "freedom". Also, ignorance and indifference hide behind same word.
Another issue is american imperialism. USA tries to export its values and lifestyle to all over the world, claiming it's the only acceptable. Probably there's nothing wrong in being able to eat in MCDonald in every part of the world, but there are much more serious concerns. Enforcing democracy with military measures in traditional communities leads to nothing and shows inability of Americans to accept different mentality and lifestyle than their own.

3. Poland. I visited a lot of other countries and most of my friends are foreigners, but again, I'm not a kind of traveller.

4. Poland - the mental disease of Poles is the complete lack of hope and trust. Poles don't believe in group success, they don't believe each other and are selfish. Cheating in exams, taxes or at work is considered the only right way to do stuff for many. That's why we keep walking in circles and progress is slow.
This is especially noticeable in politics. We have hundreds of smart, competetive and noble experts, but they are not relaly expected to take part in politics. Politicans choose commrades that cover their back and obey orders and don't have the idea of greater good. Neither they are expected to have one - one politican is voted only to stop the other one, not to actually do the job.
The specific thing in Poland is that our "patriots" claim that the country is ruled by outer dark forces, agents and traitors and it's coming to its doom.

5. These are very different.

My opinion of the U.S.?

Having lived in the place all my life I can tell you, it's complicated

It's hard to complain about living in the world's richest and strongest nation, especially in the part of the country I live. I feel secure and I feel privileged. I'm proud of our history and what we accomplished, even if our past is checkered.

America is a great idea for a country, because it's based on an ideal instead of an ethnic group. Even if you're not a citizen you can be an American. You just have to want to speak, and believe freely. If I spent the rest of my life in another country, I would never be able to get rid of the American in me, even if I tried. The first amendment is a part of me, and it will be until I die.

But the very thing that makes America great is also the very thing that makes me feel unwelcome.

America is a beacon of freedom, but the cost of freedom is loneliness. Everyday I'm reminded that's it's my job not to care for my fellow Americans, because caring might take their freedom. By the same token if I fall on hard times, then it's supposed to be on me get out of it, and if I starve to death, then it's no skin off of America's back.

I never wanted a baby-sitter or to be one, but for god-sakes we're a county. We're supposed to care about each other a little bit. Then again I'm being greedy. I can't have it both ways. Ether, I'm in a group or I'm free.

Sorry for rambling, but your request touched on a lot of complicated stuff.
