I think the poet is in us very early, meaning I think we learn to let him/her out to play.

When I see the world I often see it in pictures instead of it always being a real-time movie. So it's those snapshots that I've found myself thinking about and sometimes putting down to share.

Once in a while I used to get a little whimsical. Pain has a way of driving the carefree away, so you have to battle to keep it or you become a shoe-horn.

From years ago:

"Onward flies the everlasting engine"

Onward flies the everlasting engine...I know
Going nowhere at breakneck speed...I realize
Venturing to heights never explored...I can
Re-visiting a well trod valley...I rest
Listen to the noise of yesterday...I hear
Calling out an unfamiliar name...I do
Whispers of a visited tomorrow...I shouldn’t
Catcalls from a freckled child...I cringe
Dust is rising somewhere unseen...I care
Clouds drift across minds...I am
What of the fabled promise?...I believe
Seven is the number...I see
Skylines and tree lines collide...I witness
To ride a sunbeam to a flower...I try
Stumbling in the shade of the past...I regret
Hold fast to the purging soul...I will
Void of face are the forgotten...I remember
Mirth chases after me...I stop
Casting magic at my toes...I dream

Halloween

The day dawns bright
under full sunlight
The sky is blue
no frightening sight

Leaves have told
that leaves are gold
the leaves are leaving
as night grows cold

As the Sun goes down
without a sound
Shadows stretch long
across the ground

The moon's glow
only faintly shows
on trees and homes
and the ghouls below

Scary masks on faces
racing across spaces
carrying bags in hand
spooking homely places

Then they'll greet
Trick or Treat!
opening large bags
wanting something sweet

Young voices soon tell
that all went well
getting lot's o' candy
ringing Halloween's bell.

Try to crack this one down if you can:

Light is fading
Sound invading
And we're now left in the dark
Screaming at each other

Enveloped in darkness
Guided by noise
We find our way
To how it once was

Sounds like War or Blackout or something equally nasty. A not-fun.

Yes, it's about war, but I like the blackout idea.

We're reading a lot of post-WWI poetry in school, so this little poem came to mind.

It's that time of the year again
Moody and rainy days rolling by
I require warmth
I require a warm touch
And a moment of silence
That would last forever
With the right person

Frigid are the nights

I think of the heart's desire
To make it through the cold

Vastness of the smile brightens my day
In dreams, a surprise guest
Roses and tulips pale in comparison
Getting lost in the fields of joy
Only to find my way back to the start

Visits now long awaited
Indulging in moments of deep thought
Ready to separate from the predetermined
Glowing heart beating for more
Of what it longs, and longs, and longs

Velvet embrace I'd never give up
If Chronos allows, then it is forever
Repeating, chanting like a lunatic
Gifted with an angel in his mind
Of soothing light and purity

That one actually took some effort *shock*
I don't know why, but it just isn't as easy for me to write like I used to.  Back then, it just happened.

Bravo! Yes...you are a budding-Poet. If you were not, the first tries would not have happened because you would not have had that instinct. After that start, we move on to the seeing words as tools and we begin to "dig and sculpt Meaning with them" molding a series of words into some form of music...be it neutral somber or joyous and full of wonder.

More power to you.

Hmm, a good point.
I noticed that the more we cover modern poetry in school, the more I gain insight into the workings of creativity itself.  I will try to incorporate more layers of consciousness into my works from now on.

That's good to do for sure. I will add an experience that I've had. Though I am not saying you will encounter this but be aware for developing a habit of too much focus or seriousness. It's hard to describe what I mean without sounding nutz, but I have found that "for me" when I have written my best has often been without striving and sometimes my least meanings conveyed happened when I overworked so-to-speak and didn't flow.

I'm not saying to not follow your instincts or in this case your immediate approach - I'm speaking more to an awareness of Self. Hope that makes some sense.

Anyway, I must add that you are an encouragement to me and I enjoy your efforts these many months.

<imo> Poetry, in it's many forms, is too often thought as outdated for Society or even worse sissy or boring. I know now, that done properly, it is a potent form of sharing and perfect for this present age that is so "instant" that many people do not or will not take time to read long communications unless they must for some reason.

Pawns

Heads up!  Look straight!

   Why do we wage wars?
Why do we live behind bars?
   Why can't we know more?
Why is everything we see gore?

Mouths shut!  Form a line!

   A child is born
   His hopes high
   The dream is torn
   He doesn't know

   He eats his bread
   In darkness, in fear
   He knows naught but dread
   "The enemy draws near!"

Weapons raised!  Aim, fire!

Another story of valor and bravery
"He died a hero and patriot"
It is nothing more than slavery
Getting crushed under the war chariot

Didn't you say you were also studying WWI? Anyway, regardless that put me there (any war really) and made me think of the "war-poets." I think there is a free book at Gutenberg on them and their protest poems. Not sure though. Men like Sassoon<sp>? and other. Stuff like "Flander's Field."

Btw, if you are in the mood to explore...just put poetry into the search-bar at Gutenberg.org and you will see...mankind until this present age has thrived on poetry in a vast amount of forms.

Since you like HoMM like me, there is a chance you might really enjoy Icelandic, Norse and Anglo-Saxon works very much. Many of them are also free for download if you want to study, Myth, History and Poetry all at once.

Make it Great!

Thought I would share an important Poem from history translated into modern English.

THE RUIN
[Text used: Kluge, Angelsächsisches Lesebuch.

This description of a ruin with hot baths is generally assumed to be of the Roman city of Bath. {In England} The fact that the poet uses unusual words and unconventional lines seems to indicate that he wrote with his eye on the object.]

Wondrous is its wall-stone     laid waste by the fates.
The burg-steads are burst,     broken the work of the giants.
The roofs are in ruins,     rotted away the towers,
The fortress-gate fallen,     with frost on the mortar.
Broken are the battlements,     low bowed and decaying,
Eaten under by age.     The earth holds fast
The master masons:     low mouldering they lie
In the hard grip of the grave,     till shall grow up and perish
A hundred generations.     Hoary and stained with red,
Through conquest of kingdoms,     unconquered this wall endured,
Stood up under storm.     The high structure has fallen.
Still remains its wall-stone,     struck down by weapons.
<line 14>They have fallen . . . . . . . . .
Ground down by grim fate . . . . . . . .
Splendidly it shone . . . . . . . .
The cunning creation . . . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . from its clay covering is bent;
<19>Mind . . . . . . the swift one drawn.
The bold ones in counsel     bound in rings
The wall-foundations with wires,     wondrously together.
Bright were the burgher’s homes,     the bath halls many,
Gay with high gables     —a great martial sound,
Many mead-halls,     where men took their pleasure,
Till an end came to all,     through inexorable fate.
The people all have perished;     pestilence came on them:
Death stole them all,     the staunch band of warriors.
Their proud works of war     now lie waste and deserted;
This fortress has fallen.     Its defenders lie low,
Its repairmen perished.     Thus the palace stands dreary,
And its purple expanse;     despoiled of its tiles
Is the roof of the dome.     The ruin sank to earth,
Broken in heaps     —there where heroes of yore,
Glad-hearted and gold-bedecked,     in gorgeous array,
Wanton with wine-drink     in war-trappings shone:
They took joy in jewels     and gems of great price,
In treasure untold     and in topaz-stones,
In the firm-built fortress     of a far-stretching realm.
The stone courts stood;     hot streams poured forth,
Wondrously welled out.     The wall encompassed all
In its bright embrace.     Baths were there then,
Hot all within     —a healthful convenience.
They let then pour . . . . . . . . . .
Over the hoary stones    the heated streams,
Such as never were seen     by our sires till then.
Hringmere was its name . . . . . . . . . .
The baths were there then;     then is . . . . . .
. . . . . . . . .     That is a royal thing
In a house . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Lines 14-19. The text is too corrupt to permit of reconstruction. A literal translation of the fragmentary lines has been given in order to show the student something of the loss we have suffered in not having the whole of this finely conceived lament for fallen grandeur. The line numbers are those of Kluge’s text

A beautiful vision
Once danced in the mind's eye

Time stood still
Autumn leaves painted green
Rain felt like sunrays
Warm were even the coldest of days

A vision
Once stood in the mind's eye

Time went on
Autumn leaves kissed the stone
Frigid rain never ceased
Bright days long deceased

Nothing in the mind's eye

Time ran out
No leaves
No rain
No day

Just a hole
And a fistful of lost hope

The night crawls far away
The wind is asleep, the moon is silent
Cold, cold winter
Makes me remember

My heart is bouncing
My body stressing
I feel deep inside, I sense
I feel deep down something changing in my soul
Anger, bitterness
That tiny voice, that scary sound
Going insane, I hear a monster murmuring inside of me
He says hatred, he says misdeed
Now, without any doubt
I know, that in the depths of my soul, evil is lurking, whispering,
Calling for madness
Indeed I know, that I'm changing to a terrible monster
Falling down to dizziness
Giving up to loneliness

Why should I apologize?
Why?
They made me this way, why don't they?

Then, like a flash of hope
Dawn calles up to the skies
The Wind wakes up, starting to blow
And then she came
Brightening the fearsome night
Brought warm to my life
Brought rest to my soul

The summer's night never felt colder
I lie on a nailboard
Shaking
Thinking

My voice is gone
Yet I internally scream
My eyes are gone
Yet I wipe the tears

An endless gallery of memories
In my head
I stop at each picture and gaze
Trying to comprehend
The end

I was blind to it
With my eyes I didn't want to see it
But now I don't need them

The end is here
And it blew away the warmth
Of the embrace I grew to adore

The end is here
But it couldn't cut the bond
That links you to my heart

I don't want the bond to break
Because I know
Alone we wouldn't make it through
Because I know you love me
Because I know I love you
