FOR THE HORDE!
I am a Horde player So the Orc one of course
Oh man! I am so psyched. It has been 7 years since I was in California last time. Gonna be insane with this little nerdgasm. Blizzard is my favorite game company and as I have been getting older, I can see how much the company has changed from EPIC to being owned and controlled by Activision. So I really want to feel that last breath of greatness before they end up like EA

I've read Activision Q1 2019 financial reports. King games (they make the whole Candy Crush c*ap) beats the rest of the earnings by a mile. Hence I don't see any other direction then mobile for Blizzard which is sad.
If Blizzard ever wants to go back to their old selves it's either by seperating from Activision or showing that they really care and making a stand and saying "we want creative freedom!".
Which will never happen.
Then again Blizzcon itself will probably be a great expierience for you, their fandom is one of the best out there.
As I'm not going to Blizzcon, I will need to make do with the Art of WoW artbook (still waiting for the delivery), which encompasses WoW as it was before it derailed.
EDIT: @emil, take a look at this https://www.reddit.com/r/wow/comments/bkd5ew/you_need_to_have_a_phone_to_attend_blizzcon_this/. Just so you're aware. Also a few comments below a guy precisely dissects the app.

Well it's seems to me Blizzard has started to be really profit-oriented, even if it means loosing the hardcore fanbase (because there is only so much fans can take). But, because the fanbase is actually a small % of their total income it is a loss they can calculate in. I mean every big company nowadays does it (especially Activision and EA), but it hurts to see Blizzard as a victim of this policy. Blizzard of old had bigger pricetags on their titles, but with it came quality and a feeling of games made by fans for the fans. Now fans are nothing more then moneybags.
Hearthstone is in a moderately good state because they still keep a piece of creative freedom, although some decisions (ever-more expensive preorder deals) show that the "most profitable" IP will also be changed sooner or later.
It's worth going to Blizzcon for the people and atmosphere, so you shouldn't feel discouraged emil, but I think it sugar-coats the state of the company as a whole. Imo this years Blizzcon might be groundbreaking (maybe "historic" even). Either they will show remorse and show love for the hardcore fans or continue on the profit-oriented path. There will be no coming back from this point onward as grim as it may sound...
PS: You can always bring an old analog phone or no phone at all emil

I knew about the mobile phone in order to get in. But that is no worry imo.
We are addicted to our phones in DK. For the love of god, I have all my credit cards on my phone. I do not use cash or credit cards anymore. I just use my phone.. Google knows everything about me
I agree Blizzard is diffently not in a great place creative, but this is something I just have to try

That is probably what Blizzard assumed: they "all have phones", so people don't give a rats ass either way, so why not use it? I think a big part of the visitors won't even know about this, personal security in this day and age is a really disregarded afterall...

Well, this is why I said that people do not care about their personal security. But it is not emil alone, it's simply how people are these days. "We are already invigilated, so why care?". And that's what Blizzard is exploiting: "everyone does it!". It's one thing if a company like them wants to use gathered information for marketing purpose. But the main issue here is that the app might be used by some ill-intentioned people.
I still have a big sentiment for Blizzard, I simply can't stay indifferent to the their games. But the main difference is that once I was very exited with their worlds, storytelling and characters and tracked any news with interest. I still am doing it (especially related to the older stuff), but I can't shake this feeling of being disappointed, cynical and wary whenever I see something related to them. When I see this "in Blizzard we care about what we create and the fans" I can't take them seriously anymore. For instance Blizzcon which was a celebration of everything Blizzard, has become this "how much will they disappoint us this time?" fare.

Sheeple. They let absolute complete strangers know everything about them. Passwords, pins, codes, location, occupation, friends, private life, everything. Information is power and power corrupts, just take the Facebook incidents over the years (only the tip of the iceberg).
But I believe that most Blizzcon attendees know better. It's not like they're complete newbies, I expect most of them to be savvy in the world of information such as to carefully consider their privacy. Blizzard as a whole can go to hell as far as I'm concerned, they were once a bastion of creativity and quality, but now they went on the cancer side.

Yet we still play their games.
Their recent actions simply show one truth: as with many big developers they (unfortunately) reached the state in which they calculated that "big money does not necessarily mean happy fans". It is the sign of times. Some developers still make games for fans, are still bringing quality over quantity, but there are less and less of those left: gaming has become a big business that emphasizes raw numbers. It's a simple fact.
It doesn't mean they won't make good and enjoyable games anymore, but somewhere along the line the "magic" was lost. Now it's more of a "service" then anything.
A'right enough with this grim talk, somehow I always bring this "state of Blizzard" thing up. Sigh.

On another note, I realised that becoming a HS pro is actually way harder than just being good at the game. You have to have a collection on 3 different servers, you have to go to events and you also need a team or a sponsor otherwise you'll go negative. Is it really that convoluted as it seems, or do I have a decent shot? I don't even know anymore, but for now I'll keep on trying to climb the ladder.

If by "pro" you mean good enough to at least try for the tournaments, then yeah of course it's hard. You need to sink unimaginable amounts of time into the game and that does not come without sacrifice. I think it was bloodyface who hovered in a high position for a while, but only really broke through to what he is today after quitting his job to focus on HS.

The Dalaran Heist
It appears they put a lot of work into this solo mode. Looks interesting. The question is: does it have enough going for it to hook (and motivate) a player for longer?

Seems it will be a full-fledged, RPG like single player experience (well as much as Hearthstone engine can allow, but they said it's pretty flexible), with mini-quests, deck managment and even "buying" cards. I also like the "henchman" designs.
It might turn out to be very cool, but the problem with Hearthstone is that f2p games make it hard to enjoy this type of content as it does not give anything more after completion. It is not an accusation, it's just how my mentality/time restrictions work in this game: I rather play something which will grant me packs rather then repeat something I've already completed once. Ofc if the mode does turn out worthwile I might change my approach Plus some players enjoy this type of content even more then standard modes. And the more I read about it, the more it might be worthwile.
I wonder if they could exchange this for Tavern Brawl: for instance make a mode in which there are weekly updates to the mechanics/content (seems they've actually created something like that with "Anomalies").
A 1997 Microprose MTG style game is what I'm dreaming of

The heist looks cool. It looks more like something, I would enjoy than the previous single player content.
It has that League of Explores wipe to it.
What I hate of course is the wing aspect.. The use 700 gold on a short lived experience and not getting those 7 packs.. yikes..

They did say it's going to be akin to the Dungeon Run. So I hope that while it has old school wings they will be longer or with more replayability than said old school wings.
