I've also played hundreds of hours of homm 3, but keep throwing out that strawman, because it's all you have

The first rule in Russian league is "if players meet first week, restart game".
What you look at is a modified game, with custom rules, not even close to original Heroes; several spells are removed, several Heroes and skills banned and so on. But sure, if this serves your argument, continue to give the bad examples.

more homm 3 hilariousness. This game actually had a few (completely inconsequential) battles before it between some scouts, but once again the game ends after several hours in a fight that is over before it has even begun

I don't really have much experience with those games. I've played II a little bit a long time ago, but not the other two.
Maybe they're great games, who knows? The difference is, there isn't an army of people trying to snow on other games for "not being heroes IV" while the game is clearly garbage from anyone that doesn't have an unhealthy emotional attachment to it.
