Regarding a vision how to evolve the gameplay, here is my current plan. First, I like to introduce a worldstate. It defines who owns which province on a worldmap and the strategic resources and assets. In effect it provides you a choice of various missions (the equivalent of current playable maps) from the worldmap, and many interesting things can be done by having worldmap variables affect the mission setup.

Secondly, I'd like to introduce patterns that define everything in the game. You can compare them with Minecraft's building blocks, only that they are also used to define skills, traits, spells, artifacts, creatures, heroes, everything in the game. Basically, you will be able to express every rule and object from all Heroes games yet, which will give us a sandbox to define and experiment with the rules that we will make the default of our game. The real strength of this approach though lies in the flexibility it provides us and that everything interacts dynamically with everything else in the game. Together with the worldstate this allows for fairly unique and advanced gameplay features.

I know this sounds fairly abstract and thought about giving an example here. But while writing the example, I realized that people here can object to it being special because you could write equivalent scripts. The main difference to scripts is that a pattern based approach is not that arbitrary (scripts require the author to define a change of the world in its entirety) and that building blocks (patterns) can be shaped and cut and logically intertwined by their very nature. They will also maintain proper reactivity, even if many worldstate changes interfere. It may not sound like a big deal but it is.

The argument that you normally hear against it is that it is next to impossible to write an AI for this. Well, our answer is that we have the AI already.

So, area of control 2.0 basically, digitizing every object and action to be processed in sandbox patterns, and a very powerful AI.

I think you should open a dedicated thread if you're interested in feedback.

What? Player base decline in predominately single player game in the niche genre as the owners play through the game? You don't say.

Nonsense:

Compare with Heroes VI

No thank you, I think your opinion is nonsense.

All I can see in your link is a very similar trend.

So wouldn't see any significance in the fact that the predecessor has 10 times more players than the actual game 3 months after release - and still more CURRENT players?

You can also have a look at AoW 3 which has over 400.000 owners - that's two games of the same niche genre faring a lot better.

I mean - with the first big 50% off sale done, you can safely say the game bombed.

@Quantomas

Thanks for shedding more light on the project, even if I'm not sure I get it all already as far as I'm concerned you obviously have more trust from me than Ubi and Limbic will ever have.

Ps. About visuals I don't know if you've checked the h3 forum but there is some very talented 3d and graphical artists hanging around out there.

If you want to go with it fully professional won't be there some legal problems? I don't think Ubisoft would like someone using their brand without their permission. It's entirely possible that Ubisoft would consider it a copyright infringement and fill a lawsuit or something. Creating jobs for people means paying salaries which would imply there's a profit involved and that makes it harder keeping it under the radar or consider it a tribute act that justifies the law of fair use, except if there's a legal loophole involved or Ubisoft agrees (if that's the case, Ubisoft may or will impose some draconian rules nonetheless). I wish you the best of luck, but these legal barriers may prove a big obstacle for the project.

Depends.

It's not different from the football manager games, when one corp has the exclusive rights for the names, and every other manager comes with slightly changed names plus an editor to change names and so on.

Other than that, Ubisoft has no exclusive right to make a turn-based mix of strategy and RPG in a fantasy environment with separate tactical stack-based combat.

Just look at King's Bounty.

Heroes 3 HD Edition, released in the beginning of 2015, has five times as many owners as H7, and still enjoys more active players.

Is that people that only bought h3? Cause deluxe and collectors edition came with it. Not that I'm trying to say the game was a success, but just clarifying.

Even if you think that every copy of H7 was deluxe/collectors edition(which most certainly isn't the case) they wouldn't count even 20% of the h3 HD numbers as free copies.

the only way to know exactly how badly Heroes 7 flopped would be to see the Uplay sales data, but either way I'm sure it will be reflected in the (lack of) future Heroes products lol
