While HoMM1-2 castles were IMO well built (town placed around/near fortificated castle), HoMM3 and HoMM4 towns were IMO built without taking any defense factor. See Stronghold from H3 - you can easly put siege engines above castle itself and bombard it from above.
H3 Stronghold is protected by natural wildlife, didnt' you know
But seriously, without something to besiege you don't really have a use for siege engines.
And how would you easily place them on even the slightest slope?

I've long since gotten used to the disconnect between "town screen" and "siege defence arena"... and I doubt we'll see the end of it any time soon.

Well, I'll admit it's not great, but at least we can see they got there via portal now, even though it doesn't quite match up with the town screen. In Heroes V you had this amazing city in the sky but the siege would take place on the ground with no sign of the sky city or even how you get up there. Sure mages can fly or teleport but how does an invader do it?
Also, hi everyone. I'm new. Been stalking these forums for a while but only recently decided to say something.

I'm inclined to agree with Darklord.
They ain't never gonna be no Unicorns. But the more they look like a Megaloceros, the better they gonna look.

Steyn said: Haven surely had the most walls, but all towns had the fortifications at the town entrance instead of on some hill overlooking the town (as in 3 and 4). Besides, also Fortress and Stronghold had their town completely walled-in upon building fort.
Academy didn't have a town entrance, rather a main gate.
The platforms with those boxes (which I think houses commoners) doesn't even have safety railings. I'm guessing magic?
Dungeon also doesn't have a clear town entrance.
The Inferno castle is the town.
Necropolis is just a bunch of spires.
Sylvan has a moat.
You are confusing the town hall with the castle, which is understandable because of the difference in size. All de examples you gave have some kind of stairs or bridge leading to the town(hall). When building the fort/citadel/castle this walkway is obstructed by a gate with walls. Only for Haven, Fortress and Stronghold these walls encircle the whole town, which I guess has something to do with the geographical conditions.
Avirosb said: I believe surrounding forts were much more common unless the city was real special-like.
The definition of a city (in the middle ages) is a town with City Rights, which includes the right to have a market, guilds, city walls and some form of self-government.

Give it a rest, Stevie! It happens from time to time, but it doesn't mean that a blog update'll be released within minutes of that.
You're really anxious to know the results of the Purge, right?

I know that castles and fortifications such as walls are related, and that one appear when you build the other in the games.
They're not one and the same however; a castle really isn't something that surrounds a town. That was the entirety of my point when replying to Danny.

We are not planning this far ahead for the moment
