I think it's a technical issue, the same was with Namtaru's hair on H6 site.
P.S.: when I first saw them, I thought "OMG, they gave the Lamasu a big spider necklace!"

Spikes? sure, but either way it looks nothing like the concept art. If they made the 3d models look more like the art I wouldn't hate looking at the lamasu so much

Just to make this clear. We have the H5 vampire, the H5 Death Knight (also a vampire) and the H5 Wraith.
In H6 they Took the original vampire, added the Death knights armor and called it a vampire knight
Now in H7, they did the same, but took the leftover horse from the death knight put the Wraith on it, gave it the vampire status and called t a Grim Reaper.
So now have 2 units carrying the characteristics of of 3 units from H5.

I don't think they are done with the models and animations yet. Ubi-Nox used the word "current" animations and models in the blog post, which I take as work in progress.

Personally I don't mind Grim Riders being Vampires that much because:
1) They don't look like Vampires, but as a mix of Death Knight & H5 Wraiths. They look so badass
2) Gameplay-wise they don't act as Vampires or anything like that.
Although it is quite boring to see Necropolis ruled so hard by Spiders & Vampires, some extra variety wouldn't hurt there

if you're a player who ignores the lore it's no problem of course, you gotta admit the unit looks pretty cool,
but there are people who legitimately wouldn't mind a good background too, without stuff like the wizard-did-it beastmen, fire giant dwarves and now vampire reapers lol

When Mage decides to live forever, he becomes Lich, which is first step of Vampirism. So realy Lich = early Vampire.
When Vampire matures ... oh pardon immatures he becomes Vampire.
When he is killed, he can be raised as skeleton so, Skeloton = Undead Vampire.
Some Vampires are female, and when they die, they are Vampiress Ghost. Ghost = Female undead Vampire
If Vampire is powerfull and can affoard the horse and some better armor, he usualy also decide to equip the scythe. Thus he is known as Grim Rider, or Grim Reaper. So, Grim rider = Vampire on horse with scythe.
Vampires prefer Spiders as pets.
Lamassu is just there. He's not Vampire or Vampire related. Realy.
No I mean it. He's not.

Yes yes, I agree, but we've seen things much, so much worse than this on Ashan.
This is very minor to me

I...really like the idea fusion two unit to have another spot for one more unit. I thought if they did so (and they do), they will pick vampire and dread knight. It was a pleasant surprise for me to see the wraith is the rider.
But turn out they choose the safe way, which it not bad, but not as good as my expect.
Oh well, at least I still have lamasu.

How many of those are not gonna buy H7 for this? For how many of them is this the Straw that broke the Camel's back?

My point is if you care that much about the lore. Enough to hate the current lore that much that you'll not buy the game, you'll have given up by now. If H5 didn't killed the game for you, H6 certainly did.
By now, if you care, you've left HoMM for as long as Ashan exists or you've accepted it.
If you're not either of those people, you don't care about the lore. You complain about how your Fish & Chips are wrapped in the Sun and not in the Daily Mail. You cannot be bothered to read the wrapper and you consume the Fish & Chips regardless.
