Well, frankly, I would redesign the basic hc concept from scratch, because it's barely readable. Stevie did good there, but that font is still in conflict with the background items.

I would try Ubi Dev as an alternative to Developer/Official/Ubisoft, as it gives more information in one line.

I do agree that the current ones have major issues with readability. Logical solution would be to put the text either over or under the image instead of layered on top of it.

The problems I have with Stevie's new icons are that they seem scaled down from larger images which makes them look very pixelated, so if these were to be used, they had to be redrawn to make them more well-defined.

I've done pixel by pixel work and repairs after resizing, so you don't have to worry about that. Although my experience as an artist amounts for less than a day, so maybe that's a bit of a problem

How about stylized text of moderator where the swords goes throught the letters 'o' resulting in 'M' and 'r' being behind the sword and 'derat' being on top of it? Some kind of runic or elaborate decorative text would fit nicely. No reason to keep it as a bland font.

Easier said than done, with no much value in the end. Keeping things simple's actually better. Also that's stylized text you see there, font's called Kingthings Calligraphica.

It is hard to read though, a shorter text that fits between the head of the hammer and the end of the handle would be easier to read and not get lost in the it.

Yea, I agree with Ad, they don't have to be readable, they have to look good. Although I wouldn't go for a different color, unless I plan to color all the ranks' texts differently.

I definitely agree that readability is an issue, but this is consistent with the current Admin/Moderator icons, so Val has to voice his opinion on whether he's open for a general re-design.

I didn't go for the prettiest option in my design but more one that fits the current ones in style. Someone mentioned hammer as appropriate for developer, and it does fit the theme of weapons (staff/sword) also.

I made the blue-text option because Val suggested it might be good to have a different colour to show that these people are not engaged in running the community but play a specific role.

Wow, what you guys have come up with in just one day is pretty impressive! I don't want to put too many roadblocks to creativity, but I'll address some basics:

Word: it sounds like "Developer" is a good word to use. I agree that by putting "Ubisoft" into the icon we are potentially limiting ourselves in the future. Still open to suggestions if someone thinks of an even better word.

Practical Use: the representative would have the "Developer" icon with an associated fixed status name (the equivalent of "Hero of Order" and "Mage of the Land" - we can think about what it would be) and in their custom status (editable profile field that all members have) they can put what their official role is. I'm thinking that they will not have any stars, just like mods and admin.

Replacing All Icons: Stevie's work is pretty impressive, but I think that part of what makes HC unique is the old-school feel. I see it as part of the appeal that things are a bit rough around the edges and pixelated.
If we are to replace all icons I think they really have to "wow" us and ideally have an older style more reminiscent of pixel graphics, Heroes 2 and 3 which are at the origin of HC.
Overall, this contest is for one icon, so I suggest focusing on one unless you want to make the others just for fun. If an amazing alternative set with a suitable feel is proposed, we may adopt it, but this was not the original intention.

Weapon: I really like the hammer idea, because it is also used to build and craft. Fits well with moderator sword and admin wand. I don't want to limit everyone to a hammer in case someone comes up with something better, but it is a good concept to keep in mind that the chosen item/weapon should fit the duty of the title.

Text colour: blue on the hammer (Alci's icon) is too hard to read - dark gray and blue blend together. So I guess whether we have red or another colour will also depend on the background image used. Again, don't want to limit your creativity here.

Edited the blue one inon my post up there and I actually think it's easier to read on the gray background.

Or maybe my eyes are effed up I dunno.

Indeed, Hammer is a very fitting choice. Alci's proposal with red text looks great imo

I kind of liked the blue text, but I can see the point of the blue being very hard to tell from the dark grey. One could play with a lighter blue colour, but just to throw in some other options to compare with, here's also green and orange:
