alcibiades said: I kind of liked the blue text, but I can see the point of the blue being very hard to tell from the dark grey. One could play with a lighter blue colour, but just to throw in some other options to compare with, here's also green and orange:
Text color seems too weak now.
I don't agree with Heroes 2/3 favoritism. Pretty unfounded, especially given that there's no telling what you're looking at in the first place. And a colored text on top of that makes it even more difficult. Barely a difference if you'd ask me. Plus, I'm trying to keep up with the present a bit. Like, the people you want to give these icons to are working on Heroes VII under Ubisoft, almost 20 years after the first Heroes. Some might not like that, but we need to start facing reality at some point.

For my second attempt I used the hammer idea but along with an anvil, as I thought the hammer alone is too much of a weapon, while with the anvil, we understand it is for constructing purpose. The blue, grey/blue, light/blue didn't turn out so well so I kept the red.
Maybe like this is better ?

I actually like the bow idea too, though it is true it may differ too much.

the red doesn't stand out well from the background graphic. i would opt for purple lettering, or maybe teal.
lowering the contrast of the hammer would help, as well.

The weapon in the background of the text has been something that has always irked me somewhat. The problem has to do with contrast; the weapon is very dark, while it's placed in a very light (white) background. Text is partially over the weapon, partially over the background. In order to have enough contrast with the weapon, it needs to be light, but in order to have enough contrast with the background, it needs to be dark. So, to meet both demands, the text has to be somewhere in between, not really contrasting with either the background or the weapon, decreasing readability as a whole.

Yes, this is pretty accurate, which means that basically, the only way to avoid contrast problems is to separate the text from the images. Which is doable and would leave us with something like this:

Added blue version of developer icon:

What are the size constraints on the images? I plan on making some myself, but I need to know the dimensions allowed .

A strong entry indeed from Alci. I'm curious what the Developer text colour options would look like with the new text arrangement. Another thought - what about trying to improve the readability of the text by adding a 1px outer glow around the text - white colour with 50% transparency. Don't know if that would look good, just an idea for places where letters go over the image.
Dimensions: the icon must be approximately the same size as the current ones. Not too much wider or taller.
Nostalgia/Future: modernization was not part of the scope of this contest. Contestants are welcome to make designs based on modern graphics for fun, and who knows, maybe an amazing entry will blow us away, but to avoid disappointment keep in mind that the contest is about working within the existing theme/style.

I strongly feel that those are good in and of themselves but not appropriate for this forum.

Because of the rather dark background? At least, now that I've posted them here, I do feel it's rather dark in and of itself.
