508 Error - resource limit is reached
Valeriy, recently I've had a couple of error messages when trying to access the HC website. The message is:
Quote:
508 - Resource Limit Is Reached
The website is temporarily unable to service your request as it exceeded resource limit. Please try again later.
I've done a google search and it appears that the website is reaching some limitations on the hosting server. Since I've not seen that message before until recently, is this an indication that the site has become bigger / more popular?

During the server upgrade the web host introduced a new system of server resource limits. Sometimes it kicks in and limits AOH/HC. At this stage I'm still trying to figure out why as there is no consistent pattern.
When you see the error message just reload the page (F5) and most of the time the page will display after one or two attempts.
When that happens it is not a severe overload - most pages will still load fine, just some requests are being rejected.

Hahah, I tried to go to the donate page and I got blasted with the 508 error for like 5 minutes straight 
that's seriously bad timing btw, instituting a supporter system at the same time the web site is working so crappy

Heh, that is bad timing indeed 
I see that the problem got more serious for a couple of hours today with about 6000 requests dropped. That is getting to be a huge number...
The web host is being unresponsive - I posted about this in a ticket at least a couple of weeks ago, then again few days ago. Time for telephone attack.

The main issue is that the web host introduced new resource limits during the server upgrade, and one of those limits is set too low, so during busy parts of the day it kicks in and drops part of the requests.
EDIT: no answers so far. I've made the internal HC search a members-only feature to see if that will reduce the load. This is a fairly standard practice on many forums.

Yeah, the choke is back... Still no response from the host to the support tickets and a phone message.
I did more optimization last night to reduce resource usage on the web sites, but the CPU load is still running high. I can't find a cause for it to be honest. There were times in the past when this happened and it was fixed when the host simply restarted the MySQL process on the server. I suspect it may be the same this time.
Sadly this is a shared hosting account, so I don't have access to any of these commands and we're now at the mercy of waiting for their reply. So I'm pretty powerless at this point.
Couple of suggestions in the meantime:
- If you get 508 error when you post or edit, press F5 and choose to resend form data. Repeat until it succeeds and then you won't lose what you've written.
- If you are checking the forums for new posts by reloading pages every minute, do it less frequently while the errors are present (maybe once every 10 min) to reduce the load.
