To have such Liches, they en-masse have to start dabling in forbidden Nethermancy.

Now this is sounding good, maybe some interesting story could be written about it.
And so, Liches would be faceless. *drumsjoke*
(why am I thinking of Dungeon twice in a row about this thread..).

I agree, this can work! Liches start following Sandro's example after hearing of his power. They would lose their flesh, but gain access to powerful void magic. There is definitely some potential here!

Pious Augustus. He may not be just bones but he's definitely skeletal.

What's wrong with nethermancy? It's probably the most powerful magic type in all Ashan. That's sufficient reason to have many followers.

As for the story, as I said, I want more variety, so both. As restrictive as Ashan is, I think the possibility of skeletal liches is still there.

You are correct that Nethermancy is very powerfull, which is it's main attraction. Which is the reason Sandro can maintain his own following in the Cult of the Void.

But the reason it is forbidden is because it is very and indiscriminately destructive. If destructive is the correct word. Because Nethermancy 'unmakes' absolutely everything. The Void is the absolute Nothing and everything affected by the Void or Nethermancy becomes nothing. And nothing is spared from the Nothing. When Crag Hack was affected by a void-curse, despite still being alive and despite his fame, people could not remember Crag Hack anymore and he slowly withered away.
We've seen the examples of what happens when Void magic goes wrong. In Kaspar, as a small part of his face was unmade when his carefull experiment went wrong. Or in Sandro. So the effects of a large spell/experiment going wrong, I'm sure you can follow where I'm going.

None. I hope the lich won't be there.

I never thought of the Lich as a creature, more like a hero or something unique.

All liches must be ancient creatures, killing them so easy on the battlefield in huge groups is just stupid.

I'm sure you can kill them in smaller groups as well.

Edit: Where does it say that all Liches has to be ancient, BTW?

It sounds like I should finally play Danse Macabre. First adventure pack was quite decent and I have no idea why I've decided not to play the second one...

Anyway, I still would prefer a new faction of Nethermancers over a void themed Necropolis.

I thought Nethermancers were void based? Do you mean to have two factions, one Necromancer and one Nethermancer? Cause that would be interesting, if developed properly.

Also, Rakshasa's interest in liches is kinda funny overall. I thought you were against D&D and Lovecraft? Because those were the things that largely popularized the name. It wasn't used a whole lot before then, except in the case of using it much like one would use "corpse" or "carcass".

Even so, H6 defined what a Lich is in universe. The arch-liches become so when they passed their "natural" expiration date, so clearly they can't be much older than 100 in total in order to reach that stage, so ordinary liches can't be too ancient lest they pass that arbitrary stage of undeath. Even still, any that die could theoretically be resurrected back, so there is no need to be a shortage of them.

I'd gladly see Nethermancers as a separate faction, that would rise overall number of Ashan's faction to 10.

(Of course Ylath stands higher on a list of factions I'd like to see in the future. Dragon if Air finally should get new followers and be as important as his brothers and sisters .)

Swamp Fortress-successor stands higher than either.

well no offense but as a counterpoint, you can say they won't change it all you want, but I'll tell you this for sure, they definitely won't ever change it if everyone just sits around, stifles their objections and accepts their dumbass bad excuse for a Lich as your post seems to recommend lol

Well made Sanctuary with darker/renegade theme would perfectly replace "swamp town". Just switch Mizu-something with Basilisk and Water Spirit with ugly giant toad .

That's not what I'm going for. I'm not saying roll over and take it on the lip. I'm not saying this poll is pointless. I agree, and I've said many times that making yourself heard is beter than doing nothing.
But I've been trying to point out that the lore here constrains the goal. That unless a major retcon happens, and I'm not expecting one, things are bound to stay the same. So do not get your hopes up.
Lastly, I've been trying to steer this thread into a more constructive atmosphere. Or did you not notice that? I've been steering towards ways things can happen without major upsets. Bringing forth constructive solutions will likely get more done and create more goodwill, than yelling how everything sucks.

Skeletal Liches and Void Necro all the way!

IMHO skeletal, or at least heavily-mummified (just dry skin on clearly-visible bones) should return. I'd also make Vampires more cadaver-like, like Heroes 3 and the Strain TV series. Human-looking undead should just be Heroes, being explained through illusory magic or shapeshifting abilities. Undead should be undead- horrific, ugly and rotten!

Three things:

1) Before the discovery of the mother Namtaru, wasn't there a different way of making liches? I believe for example Vein was not affected by Sandro's meddling with the mother Namtaru because he was made undeath by an older ritual.

2) I understood that by the time of H7 many magical creatures, amongst which the Namtaru have (largely) disappeared. Now I haven't seen an official source, so I don't know the truth of this information. However, if it's true then maybe the creation of liches via the 'new' method is not so easy any more...

3) Assuming the above, maybe at the time of H7 making liches via the  'old' method has become popular again, so maybe they become skeletal again because of the lack of Namtaru venom.

1. Yes. They used venom of regular Namtarus Vein was unaffected because he was touched by the Void (he ripped some memories from himself).

2. Yes, there may be a new method, but I doubt it.

3. I have another theory - Lich's description says "They keep aging however, until they resemble little more than walking mummies." So I believe that H5 Liches are "very degraded" liches of the H6 version in terms of visuals.

still voting for the Hel-like liches: women with half their body alive and the other half decomposed/dead. i just love norse mythology too much too let something this perfect slide away. there really isn't enough of it since the dwarves seem to focus on nothing but the false modern depiction of it. (valkyries and horned helmets isn't enough to make such a wonderful source of inspiration justice)

Hel is of mythological origin with half her body being a corpse. a perfect match while also getting a more diverse Necro . everyone wins
