There are options to adjust before the game in the difficulty menu. Some of them deal specifically with this.. I have once put it on hard and got wiped by pretty much every neutral stack on the map

Well, in the L map for example you better have your whole main area cleaned up within first week (or almost), and have at least Justicars built before start of week two, assure yourself to take gold into the chests as well, and be careful with your hero chainings in order to do the maximum battles (gain XP from there, gather gold and resources and artis) as well as explore the map as much as possible. Use fodders in battles, the AI is completely retarded.
Ps. The random skills system really don't feel that much random at all IMO, thanks to its restrictions. As TD and some others said, the whole issue with this skill system is that random was not taken into consideration -or at least not properly- during its design and concept. And as even more people said, the seven schools of magic really are a hindrance to it.

You guys must be joking. But then again it's Haven, which has significantly lower creeping power than Academy. I'm on the L map with Horde settings on starting armies and I'm killing everything in my sight. It's not even funny. Lots (20-49) of range Elites like Disciples and Inquisitors posses no challenge. I actually skilled my hero in Explorer just to creep faster. It's THAT ridiculous.

I was emphasizing that I'm not building my hero skills to give me an advantage in battle, because the starting armies of 2-3 heroes combined are more than enough to kill Horde level Elites.

Sure, that much is obvious. Perhaps they should reduce the army of the third hired hero to 1 tier 1 unit like in the past, it is easy enough to creep as it is. Even with 2 heroes.

No, the starting armies are fine. The problem here is the AI. Range creatures target Golem > Gargoyle > Cabir last, which is stupid as you would start with the squishiest immediate threat and not with the most tanky core that takes 3 turns to get to you. Melee ones get practically glued to the first creature that gets near. So AI prioritization is completely inept.
Another thing is the fact that you can repair indefinitely. That's absolutely retarded and also reminiscent of the healingfest of Heroes 6.
