But he should say Democrats, not Liberals. Back in those days, according to the little I've read, Republicans were more liberal than Democrats. Yet another example of politicians using words to confuse us as much as possible.

True enough, these words have mostly propaganda usage nowadays, similarly to communism, terrorism, democracy and so on. The conservative parties typically defend the interests of the bloated-rich oligarchy which in turn consists of die-hard proponents of the "free market", knowing perfectly well that it doesn't exist and will never exist but any further liberalization of the economy allows for greater concentration of economic power in a few super-rich entities - a paradox so obvious that almost nobody sees it, preferring "economic freedom" slogans. The "classical" liberal parties themselves have either turned into socialists or into some unidentifiable mutants with some vague sort of "human rights" or "planet rights" orientation but practically no clear ideological agenda and quite often just a cover for lobbying groups.

artu said: why do people care more when 150 die in Paris but skip the page when something similar happens in Kenya
Good article. I agree with most points except the terrorists' intentions. He certainly discuss possible results accurately ( the whole reshuffling the cards thing ) but he assumes that all terrorists does so because of said reason. I don't believe so. Many just join for glory of battle ( like many of our own military people ), and others actually have righteous anger ( like a member of their family killed as collateral damage, an example our media would never tell us if they knew of a particular terrorist's background ) and just share their pain with us out of revenge.
Either way, a well explained argument for the simple conclusion of "don't do what the terrorists wants", an oversimplification that, in my opinion, fails to see what the terrorists really wants in the first place ; mostly us stop meddling in their affairs, just revenge or glory of battle. Other reasons exist but those are the prominent ones in my eyes. Glory of battle? They'll get plenty if we do wage a war on them. Revenge? They already got what they wanted with those 150 + deaths. Us not meddling in their affairs anymore? Ok. As opposed to what exactly, we keep meddling in their affairs forever?
This "let's not do what the terrorists wants us to do" oversimplification will probably strengthen the readers' opinion of their government more than anything else. Perhaps there's a glimpse of government boot licking hidden below all that pile of sound arguments and examples.

It's certainly not an article that covers all the angles of the phenomenon, espceially the part where states sometimes deliberately don't wipe out terrorist organizations to use them against other states or to exploit them as an excuse to insert an agenda of their own.
But the angle it tries to explain, it does it with a fresh take and with original yet coherent contemplation which is what I like about Harari, I really recommend to buy (or download) his book.

As the refugee crisis continues, I do wonder, why those people don't move to the east, instead, to China? It ain't a bad country, I think. That and more and more borders are being closed to refugees.

Two reasons I can see: a) in China you must work extremely hard to worth a decent existence, no matter your race, b) chineses are sorta very proud and in love with their country and do not pass their time to whip themselves about past actions, like Europeans do.
Which means any refugee will be treated as anyone else in China, no religious diversity allowed, no free aid for multiple kids -as chinese have/had a very strict policy on that matter, no indulgence for crimes -but instead one bullet payed by criminal's family. In this very moment, I don't see why anyone -refugee or not- would consider moving to China, but rather move out from. However I hope this will change, I see China as having the greatest potential in the close future, culturally, economically and socially speaking.

Well, there was such an awful lot of China in those 6 lines that I thought you might have the discourse figured out already
But anyway, on the real issue of refugees, it's interesting how Energy's post seems to give off the impression that the crisis is still raging and a media hot topic when I haven't heard anything about it in months.

I admire China but have "on moment" reserves about, did I sound hateful?
Refugees is still a hot topic where people are concerned. Like France with its "jungle of Calais", UK then Germany, where they recently lost track of about 130 000 refugees then it made to the news.

Sal would probably choose to play the piano over that any time of the day.
Also, he has good point. China doesn't need a horde of "muslim" marauders and welfare seekers. therefore, the Glorious People's Republic Of China is not attractive to the "muslim" "refugees"
If something similar to the "jungle" of Calais would be in China, be sure that it would be purged with flamethrowers and bombed into oblivion.
The economic migrants(that's what they are, not some refugees) aim for Scandinavia and Germany, as well as other European nations with liberal policies and good welfare options. Bleep, even other Europeans abuse those countries(DF's posted example).
There's nothing more to say. My only thoughts may provoke another penalty on me, as they are rather radcal on how to deal with the situation.

Out here, you get some news how refugees are still on the border, trying to get back on the road. But other countries do not approve of it and have made a limit on it. It is not "raging", but more of a preparation for what is to come.
And, likely, in a few months, it is very likely more refugees are coming. Brace yourselves, winter is coming ending soon. For it is going to be hard to keep out tens (or even hundreds) of thousands of refugees (or economic immigrants), at least not by force.

Best place for Syrian immigrants is Syria. Oppresive government of Assad should be overthrown. At the beginning there should be established a polis-state at coast of Syria. It would be easier to keep security of small area. (Getting rid of criminals and protection from intruders and terrorists). Some international forces could do it. Some kind of Syrian Hong-Kong with scant taxation (no more red-tape including schools and army). If it works, this area should be extended gradually to the rest of Syria. But there is a real good will required among other states...

I hope you are aware that the mercenaries trying to overthrown Assad in Syria were hired, payed and armed by the United States, and then, when Assad is trying to defend against, they tell "look, the snow kills his people".
If you don't know it, then I suggest you read your news from safe sources.

I doubt it is in the power of EU or US to simply bombard Asad's regime, likely because there are some countries (or a country) that wants Asad there.
Besides, I have my doubts that, after the war, the crisis would stop. For Syria isn't exactly a rich country for people to stay there willingly. This war was, for some, an excuse to move out to Europe. And closing the borders won't stop, either.

I know it...I mean this regime should exist no more because it didn't bring prosperity for Syria for decades...that's why people rebel...I worked with a guy from Syria in Denmark in 2010. He claimed that his olive plantation and proceeding factory where taken over by Assad's regime...I think Assad should be overthrown anyway...whatever by people or by other countries, not by USA, not by bombardments...show its crimes and failures...lack of perspectives...send weapon and troops(mainly recruited from Syrian refugees)
MAybe USA just wanted to destablize region not to bring prosperity or to take our attention out of other issues or to finish ordinary people there...Afghanistan, Iraq, Lybia the same...only chaos...

It doesn't have to be rich...are or were rich Asian countries or European countries after WW2... just give them possibility to work and they will be fine...now they have asset...cheap working force...

So by this logic the best place for Polish emigrants is none other than good old Poland. So if you believe that syrians should be in Syria, then pack your bags pal and leave the Netherlands. Go home to Poland.
Otherwise dude, you're just a hypocrite.
