As a fan of Witcher series I say that it has replay value as it has multiple choices, paths and endings but yes heroes is game you can play over and over. But I think that reviews are so low not because of gameplay but because of graphics, bugs and other minor issues. The best exapmle is IGN's review. They stated that there is classic HoMM gameplay but said that games deserves 6.4 because there were camera bugs and those horrible cutscenes. Honestly I would be fine if they gave it something like 2.5 but they would have to give their reasoning and say what GAMEPLAY not graphics lacked.

After trying it out, I give the game a 50 on 100, which will increase to 60 on 100 if they fix enough bugs.
My review of the game:
Heroes 7 is rough, unfinished product. While some publishers might save money somewhere and focus on another aspect of a game, Ubisoft saved money in every aspect of the game. I mean EVERY aspect of the game. Unit animations are weird and doesn't flow properly. Sound effects are lackluster. Some music was taken from Heroes 6. The main campaign intro movie is laughable! We can't even turn the camera around by holding the right clic button. That is really a bummer. The campaigns looks kind of boring. The brown like UI lacks something, and so does the square grid during battle. Perhaps the color of snow wasn't a good choice, and the battle grid needs more contrast. Lvling up is way too fast. The game sure is computer extensive for the graphics displayed, but my 8 year old overlocked 1 500 $ computer can still run it. Takes about a minute to load. Not as many bugs encountered as reported by others so far. Multiplayer desync is a huge bug however. The AI really sucks.
I haven't had the time to play enough so I can't properly judge the core fighting of the game. But so far, the units seems kind of boring. I keep meeting monsters with "undead, living or construct" along with "immune to fire, immune to cold". 1 interesting skill to the base units and 2 to upgraded ones would've been far more interesting than 0 and 1 respectively. The pizza wheel seems decent, but a wheel to customize and build ourselves would've been a lot better than 6 different classes. The multiplayer premade duel heroes is a real joke.
The game is fade all around, everywhere. But aside from all that, the core gameplay is there. It's there. You just have to look hard enough.
I'm sorry to say but Heroes 6 seems better than the 7 so far. Heroes 7, yet another unfinished product by Ubisoft where they fix just enough bugs to avoid prosecution!

Generally goes like this - had fun, good parts, bad parts - I think, score must be good judging from this wall of Text - in the end 50/100. Wat?
Indie games = 80%+ no matter how snowty the game is.
I know for fact that it's much easier for a small indie to bribe reviewers then for a giant like ubi/ea
Frankly I hate indie games in general, but I do understand how many get good scores. They don't ask for 50-70 euros for their games, they are generally around 1-20 euros. They admit their limitations, they don't claim to have perfect games, but they bring in often their unique angle and have better focus on the things that matter. I have rarely seen good graphics for example in indie games, but I have seen good ideas and great focus on the game-play. I highly doubt they put money in bribing reviewers to be honest, mainly because they don't have money to do that. Not to mention most don't even get reviewed by critics, they market/spread via social media or person to person. At the point critic may see the game it will most likely have wide array of personal reviews from players which in turn can help critic to see different aspects they would otherwise miss.
For big companies on the other hand "bribing" reviews is actually much easier. It's part of their marketing budget, they will arrange events like say fly critics to Paris, wine and dine them, offer hotel rooms and such. It's not something small company can do, but to bigger company this is an investment. Also bloggers are one target market for companies, they send in free product so they get it reviewed. That gives the product free publicity and at same time blogger is in a way obligated to give at least decent review if he wishes to receive more free goods in the future for review. For small company this is risky because there is no guarantee it will be as favorable review, meaning they really gotta count on their product when they do that.
Now the one of the problem with h7 is that it's priced like an AAA-title, yet the game feels like a B-class game. It doesn't really do anything better than previous games, though it's not bad either which begs the question why it would get high reviews? Honestly if this was an indie title with no history I would give the higher score of around 60-70 points. I could understand from new company that they have much more problems and work when they start from nothing. From company that has history and should know better, have done proper research and planning I have less leniency. To be honest when I gave this game 45-50 points out of 100 on my review I feel like I shouldn't even give them that high of a score given the poor state of the game when it came out. It should have come out like six months further in development. The games that come out half-ready should get absolutely trashed, not valued on their potential or how it will be without bugs like I did. Frankly there is a reason why critics and people alike have given this game on average negative and mediocre reviews and it has to do with the game itself and the state it is in, not people being mean about it. They/We can't play the game on the future potential and hopes because if we did every game would get 10/10, some would just require full re-start, but hey it could possibly become good/perfect game in the future.

Thats the kind of reasons we get "new" stuff like the skillwheel. Rehash the same thing and eventually evan fans get into "they arent creative" mode, even if it was something good that worked. Case in example: Batman Arkham series.
Anyway my review i guess:
As i have mentioned before, im pretty snowty in Heroes so i always play it on easy or normal. My pc is in the low end of the requirements so i set everything in low and i dont think it looks snowty but yeah. No gamebreaking bugs so far which is a relief compared to H6 random black screening.
Colorcoding should be optional but as long as my color matches my faction i dont care. The unit scaling hasnt bothered me really so far but i havent gotten/fought against any dragons which apparently are the worst offenders and if they fix it like the mod did i wouldnt mind lol.
The one thing that is definitely bad and they should look forward to fixis the memory leaking and poor optimization. But since i survived Mortal Kombat X i can deal with it (i shouldnt have to though)

Quote: Might & Magic Heroes 7 may not the series' lowest point but it's a low point all the same. Even with proper attention given to eradicating bugs, it fails to capture the magic of the franchise's best while offering a compelling experience to turn-based strategy fans.

Another good quote from this review:
Quote: Might & Magic Heroes VII may unfortunately be signaling the series’ decline and the publisher’s lack of commitment to the franchise. This game just doesn’t feel the same as the titles that fans of the franchise adored for over two decades. It doesn’t have the same grandiose and epic feel that the earlier games had. You don’t have this feeling that you’re on a quest leading your armies to victory. Battles can be fun at points and the level editor will lead to some truly impressive projects, but the game’s implementation, presentation and progression makes the whole experience not really worth the effort. The developers relied too heavily on rehashed ideas from the previous games without showing what made the franchise so good and why people from around the world continue to play even the classic Might and Magic Heroes games even today.

I think that the series is overshadowed by the grand failure of Heroes VI and as such, the reviews are much harder.
Now saying that, i must admit that the game has many flaws.
But, in the case of Indie games, since a lot of times they are made by fundraising and they end up being decent to good games, or with original ideas, they are judged way more lightly than other titles made by big companies. And with that i mean...
When a big company like Ubisoft or EA publishes a game, especially a game with long History, it is expected to meet some standards. A big company means a good funding and marketing and a well chosen team for the game (or what is expected). When a game such as Heroes comes out and is, let's face it, in many regards unfinished, or the developers have lost their focus or became to shortsighted in their vision (Erwan needs to distant himself a bit more from the franchise and try something new and different before returning, or else he will never grow a bit more and refresh himself), it is bound to lack soul.
On the other hand, there is also another side to the matter: 1. Reviews done by fans of the series and those done by people that try the game for the first time. Paid reviews and objective. Reviews made by those that get paid to make reviews for other products of the company and not for this one and so on.
In general, very few games get objective reviews and each genre gets different criteria.
A good stadegy game should have i think:
The impression circle:
1. Good Soundtrack that makes you want to listen, engage in the game and keep you listening to it (like in the case of heroes IV)
2. Pleasant graphics, not necessarily state of the art, but pleasing to the eye with good animations and fluidity.
3. Good sound effects, both from units and spells as well as from objects.
4. User Interface: clean, non introcive, detailed and pleasant to look at without feeling out of place.
The gameplay circle:
1. A good foundation of mechanics for gameplay that scale to accomodate and define difficulty levels.
2. Elements that add to replayability such as various modes etc.
3. Good story and presentation to the campaigns that continues to stand alone games
The extras circle:
1. Modding cababilities and support

Frankly I never heard neither from critics nor from gamers, what exactly made the franchise so good and why people around the globe continue to play even the classic Heroes games even today.. But they keep repeating the same words. Does anybody know by any chance? Is it some kind of mantra or this words really have any meaning?

What they mean is that if you play H7 you wouldn't know why the franchise was hailed once and people around the world are still playing the old games, because H7 is far away from that - not that they know the particulars that were good then and missing now.

The reason they are judged more lightly is because they cost much less. When you buy a new car you have much higher standards compared to a used car for less than half the price.

The arithmetic average of my Heroes 7 review scores is this:
(8 + 7 + 6 + 6 + 5 + 7 + 7 + 8 + 6 + 7 + 6 + 9) / 12 = 82 / 12 = 6.8(3)
The arithmetic average of the current metacritic scores is this:
(88 + 80 + 80 + 80 + 78 + 75 + 75 + 70 + 70 + 70 + 65 + 65 + 64 + 60 + 60 + 50 + 50 + 40) / 18 = 1220 / 18 = 67.(8)
The scores would've perfectly coincided had the metacritic scores amounted to 1230 instead of 1220. I won't lie to you, that number appeared so vividly to me in the past few months and even just minutes ago that it was the only reason I started writing this reply. But when confronted with the calculations, I realized that they didn't match. This was very troublesome for me as I somehow knew that it shouldn't be that way, and in an attempt to try and explain it I came up with this scenario. It is possible that my self from a future timeline has discovered memory leap and altered the past by giving me memories of the future. In doing so I became inclined to write a Heroes 7 review in preparation for this moment so that the uncanny scores coincidence would be perfect and make many people believe this hypothesis I'm laying down right now. However, he did not anticipate the outcome that me writing this review would then result in a change of the metacritic scores themselves. It is possible that a reviewer or many more were influenced by my own review, or who knows what other divergent line of events. This would also explain the myriad of deja vu moments, recurring dreams and bizarre illusions I've experienced lately. I was fearing I might've gone insane. Anyway, I'm writing this in hope that the envisioned outcome might still somehow come true. If not, the information will be stored and used for future experimentation.
