Hi I've been trying to make a map and although the editor is generally easy to use, there are so many quirks. I have some observations and questions.
1. I don't get the concept of 'packages' - can someone explain how this works please? What is an 'untitled' package?? Packages get saved elsewhere, then you get mismatch errors. Is the package the same as the map?? OMG if only there was some documentation around this horrible concept of packages.
2. Packages again. To fix external reference errors, close the Editor, change the project folder name (default EditorWorkspace), open the project, close the Editor, then change the project folder name back and reopen the project.
3. Anyone wondering where the map check is - go to the Unreal editor.
4. Publish Map is so buggy and hangs sometimes. I found it was better to use the Play Map option which somehow publishes it correctly. This option opens up some process which gets blocked by the firewall, so watch out for that.
5. Under map properties, player options, what are standard, script override, explorer, gatherer and general?
6. I am trying to make a 'defeat hero' win condition, but related to question 5, how can I make it so the user of my map cannot change this AI hero or any of its properties? In other words, player 1 to 4 are user defined and player 5 must be AI and not be allowed to be a custom hero.
Thanks for any answers or input!

Quote: Also is everyone else having problems linking objects and changing their properties using the main editor? I have to use the unreal editor for everything. For instance linking the manipulator to the bridge has to be done in the unreal editor. Basically every object you double click on in the regular editor that has variables such as a random town has to be changed in unreal because if you change something such as faction then close the window and re-open it the default is there again like you never changed it to begin with. WTF!
Yes it is a bug. I can link portals only through expert mode. Also some scripts work only in kismet if you manually enter the variable of the object.
I have no idea about manipulators..don`t have them on my map..haven`t touched them.

OK I am on the verge of giving up with this @#@#@$ editor. It keeps giving me package mismatch errors and I KEEP LOSING MY CHANGES. How does Ubi expect us to release maps with all this package nonsense? Who in his right mind creates an editor with packages that can save as a umap and create conflicts with the map you are editing???
It was fine at one point when I was working in EditorWorkspace but then when I tested it with Play Map it created WHAT in CustomMapsAdventureMaps - is it the package or the map??? - and then it keeps telling me package conflict between the two locations and then when I SAVE map it obviously only saves in EditorWorkspace!
aaargh!!!

I have my map in adventuremaps folder and edit and test it from there. No problems so far.

@sandman1142 You need to put your custom package INSIDE the package of your map. Not separately.
https://monosnap.com/file/y04ch1r71s2YWYPb1ejSkzNvVtAwgO
But if you want to create a separate package, you must create it with a precisely the same tree of a references like an initial package. Otherwise all connections will break and the editor will crash.

@natalka Thanks! I will try that...
@3LiON I do not want anything to do with packages. When I first started creating the map, it asked me to save 'untitled package' on the first save. Ever since then I've been battling with what to do with these packages. So, if possible, I do not want to have a package at all. I certainly did not try to create a custom package.

Have you tried the Unreal mode (the button on the far right)?
Yes I found the button...
But now can not go back to simple mode anymore.
Can you please kindly help me to find the "go back to simple mode button" as I I think Unreal mode is too difficult for me for the moment?

Having used both H6 and H7 editors extensively, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that H7 is far superior in every aspect. H7 also offers a RMG (although not perfect yet) and a campaign editor, which H6 never had.
Don't forget that the default editor is the "simple" tool to make basic Heroes maps with the game's default content. If you want to create brand new content and "complex" situations, try the Unreal mode. We made these two modes because we know there are different kinfs of mapmakers: some will just want to make a nice Heroes map with or without a simple story, while others will want to do a lot of modding.

@verriker I don't dispute anything you have said. You didn't respond to anything I have said though. Maybe this is a bad name for this thread and we should start a new one called 'editor help' ?

I thought verriker was Erwin. Technically though if he was Erwin he could have taken Marzhin's words after threatening Marzhin with a copyright violation.

It is in the same place the other button is.
Thank you, you helped me. That worked.
I even wrote to Ubi official support but it seems their customer service operators never heard about different options regarding the map editor, they asked me to reinstall the game, to reinstall windows, to send them lots of screens, etc. I can not say any more polite words about them, sorry ))
and thanks again ))
