From what I understand, if the touchpad producer refuses to make an "open" driver, you can only use a "general" driver, which is usually glitchy.
Either way, linux ain't for me. Win does cover 100% of my needs, to be honest, and I'm not really overly bothered with the telemetry server. I still blocked it just because

I heard about this a few weeks back, maybe I should have said something then.
Folks, if you have Win-7 and you want to keep it, you had better not allow any updates.
Fyi, "at least" as far back as 2008, Windows update would give you a <ahem> "Critical-update" however, there have been occasions when it also had spyware. Fact.
Even without "allowing updates" you may have already given the AOK for one of Microsoft's third-party companies independent access to your Registry. i.e. Adobe was able to bypass my "No downloads" and still do a HUGE update and all I could do was "allow restart" 600 MB update for a PDF viewer? I don't think so and now it is gone.

I find myself wanting to upgrade to 10 so i can get killer instinct!!!
I did a superficial research on how to disable most of the spyware. The plan is to keep my old hard drive as an external, and buy a new ssd to install windows 10 with nothing on it. Once i disable cortana it will be like windows 7 spyware right?
But i haven't heard anything about stability tho. Good or bad.

I'm using Windows 10 since first public beta-version and there were not many problems.
The most common problem with Win10 is that not all devices have Win10 drivers made by their developers.
I had problem with Lenovo Compute Stick hanging after Win10 upgrade. But this may new Win10 build finally came out, and now all is working like a charm.

Surprised not the whole world is hating on Windows 10, I thought I'd link the following article here: Why Windows 10 sucks (last revised May 24, 2017).
I'd like to point out the writer is a Microsoft fan and also bashes on Linux on another article.
Of course you do as you want.

Hey Galaad, I have nothing against the author of the article. However, I can post similar links proving Windows 10 is a great OS.
For me as a user without any special interest in technical details, the following features are important for me:
- it has a decent inbuilt antivirus
- it's GUI has been improved
- it has many settings to set up everything as I wish
- many new functions have been added, like for example better control of apps run during start up or the quick access
As I don't need to do any special changes, just ordinary usage, I need an OS which enables me as efficient work as possible, clear environment without many functions.
After trying both W7 and W8, I can say W10 took indeed the best of them while adding even some cool, new features. I agree there may not be many reasons to upgrade from W7 (and I did not do it either, it was my new laptop which made me do the change) but it's a necessity for both W8 users and for people who buy new machines. At least that's my opinion.
The last important point to mention: W10 is criticised for collecting user data the most. Even if ignore the fact you can reduce this amount of collected information through special settings, I don't think we can expect anything else in the 21st century... Google, Facebook, Youtube - the information is collected everywhere. It's the tax we pay for using modern technologies, we're losing a part of our anonymity and privacy.

Not all people post their lives on social media, that's a moronic thing to do. If you don't care about protecting your privacy, that's fine, but bear in mind it doesn't mean that others don't want to protect it.

Though this may be off topic a little, I'll post my thoughts.
Windows OS in general is bad OS. I prefer Linux, but in truth, any Unix based OS is much better than windows. Starting from Kernel of the OS, and going to the upper levels. IMO, the only reason that Windows lives is the fact that there are software companies who refuse to develop their softwar for other OS (game developers included here). However, things are slowly changing, and that is a good theng. Some years ago we only had Wine for gaming on Linux, now we have Steam for linux and some great games that work on it (DOTA2, AoW3, Divinity: Original sin are just some that come to mind).
Antalyan said:

Have you ever wondered why Linux is not affected with viruses as Windows is? Basically it is because Linux does not do things without your knowledge (unless user allows that, in which case it is user's own fault if something goes wrong).
Antalyan said:

From what I've seen (there are Win10 machines in my office), it is nothing special. My impression was that it is harder to navigate through toolbars in Explorer, but I haven't used it that much, tbh.
Antalyan said:

And that is nothing compared to things you can set up on Linux (or FreeBSD). You can configure just about anything. You can even change whole GUI (something that in case of windows comes to changing desktop themes) and make it even look like Windows
Antalyan said:

That example sounds like something that Unix had from it's start. Unlike on Windows, on Unix you can really control the processes (apps in your example) and even kill them, without much trouble (I still remember that dreadful task manager of windows).
Antalyan said:

I don't know what work you do on PC, but that description sounds like descriptions of Linux system But I respect if someone wants to use Windows (I hope that you won't see this as me advocating you to switch to Linux, I just posted my thoughts on the topic).
I always hear arguments that Linux is complicated for usage. In past, that was true (as Linux is free, and it was not supported by big companies such as Microsoft). However, things have changed, a lot. My girlfriend is average PC user (she is not from IT, and has no special knowledge of computers) and she was able to install Lubuntu by herself on her laptop, and still uses it. So the argument that Linux is hard for average user is invalid.

Windows 8 was ****. So, I guess windows 10 is better. But, I would argue that WIndows 7 is the last Windows that is okish to this day.

First, this reduction you are talking about is still limited, so yeah, they gather your info. The fact that it does not bother you that your privacy is compromised is disturbing. That is not the tax we have to pay. That is violation of your (our) rights. Of course, when you create accounts on Facebook, you have to agree on something and it is your choice to do so or not. I for once, never had facebook account, and never will. However, having an OS that monitors everything you do on your PC is scary. Just let your imagination work a little, and you will see how those informations can be used against the users.

Windows 10 has the most godawful program ever made, Groove.
I've been using Win10 for about a year now and it's been fairly trouble free. After installing it though I spent a lot of time de-****ing it by turning off all the microsoft crap and installing real programs.
Here's your basic set:
CCleaner
Process Explorer
Classic Shell
Total Commander
OpenOffice
Foxit PDF reader
Foobar
edit
After reading the "WIN10 sucks" I found this: "A big number of Windows 10 apps are still NOT on par with their classical counterparts from Windows 7/Vista/XP (many features are missing or many options are not configurable)."
It would be more accurate to say that all the windows 10 apps are still not on par with their classical counterparts.

Which Windows OS is better for a hardcore gaming on the old machine (have no money for the new hardware).
Windows XP - in use, but some son of the preacher man games don't working on this mega cool GUI program.
So what to choice, Windows 10 OS, and don't bother, or something earlier. Also the matter is the ability to restrict OS and programs to use the Global Internet Connection, coz' it's speed for now is something close to ~ 10 Kbyte/sec , so if the System Program will abuse the connection it will impossible for frostysh to play in video-game online .
Any good ideas, Steam OS? I don't know.
Thanx for the answers.

If you play old games that run on XP, I would advise you Linux as is particularly efficient on old machines and gives them a new life. You can play all good old Windows games through wine without much trouble. I suggest a lightweight environment, like XFCE.
If you really want to keep Windows, alas 7 would already be too heavy on a dinosaur, and you can forget about 10.
