Flanking in that game basically makes one waltz around the other, no much different from clashing front to front. If you could at least choose which direction you would face after moving or acting, it would then be much different.
Ability-wise, you had necropolis non-upgraded units as a bunch or different-shaped skeletons. Some would just be different (aside stats) when they were upgraded.
Quote: Graphics are plain disappointing regardless of what game you compare them with, I expect better from a 2016 AA title. Those goddamn awful trees man. Or the badly scaled units. Or the terrible effects like treant bubbles.
Not to mention those system requirements and demands. If it was supposed to be better than H6, it should at least look better (not the same) and work better or easier, if it's the same. Given it's the same with worst performance, then it's worse.

It doesn't make sense to pick out a couple of points and start comparing them, because a game is (or SHOULD) always be more than the sum of their elements; as important as the elements as such are, their interaction with each other and its fluidity is at least as important. So

At this point we might as well make our own Heroes game (with cardgames and pleasant female company) if we ever are to hope to have something decent to call a heroes game again.

No, because both I & VI are worse. Original HoMM is too worn & simple, I haven't even touched HoMM 2 for over a decade simply because it lacks depth of later games. Not even nostalgia can help the original game for me since I was introduced to series with II.
Only thing I miss from VI is Sanctuary and some nice music tracks. Non-random skill system, Dynasty weapons and Conflux were all very detrimental to my experience playing that game.
I've mostly played few cooperative hotseat games in VII and despite the shortcomings (especially with the early versions) I've enjoyed it.
Pity we are likely to never see any more impactful future content for the series...

Don't touch Heroes I! It's a great game, that already set up future blockbasters like HMM2/3. And it is more challenging and hard, than other parts of franchise including HMM3.

Bashing the first game isn't too good of a call. Wouldn't have had the others without it, now would we? VI you can bash all you want, its nothing but a poor, yet at times enjoyable, game failing at catching it's precursors glory.

That's the problem. I'm not touching it because I see no reason to. It only has historical value as a progenitor of the series like Civilization 1 but that's it.

wouldn't agree it is actively worse than H7 and all the other games just because it's been superseded in most ways by a better sequel mate, maybe the least interesting in a current context but not the least valuable or worst lol,
in a universe where Heroes 2 and 3 are not available I will still play happily clean and simple little Heroes 1 for a hundred million years before ever going near bugfest cheapskate garbage of Heroes 7 which destroys one's processor and has no fun charm or wit lol

I absolutely concur. The only saving grace of Heroes VI were the nice graphics, the world & unit design as well as the (mostly) enjoyable campaigns. Otherwise the dumbed down skill system was a major showstopper & the Conflux elements were simply not necessary. Although I did enjoy making my own heroes, being able to give them OP "dynasty perks" and even more OP "dynasty weapons" pretty much destroyed the balance of the game.
Heroes 7 might have had its technical & bug issues, but it at least has a good replayability value - if your system specs can put up with it. I just wish that they wouldn't have botched the game's release so bad by green-lighting it in such an unacceptably buggy state. Better reviews and sales would have hopefully kept development going until the missing 2 factions are released.

RE-playability needs PLAYability first, though, which means it doesn't factor into the equation.

Well, I did mention both factors that limited playability (buggy release and bad optimization), so I kinda implicitly covered that one

My main issue with Heroes VII is that it just feels... completely bland. Even with the Paul Romero/Rob King music (which sadly sounds largely uninspired), there doesn't seem to be any love put into the development--it's clear the developers were just going through the motions.
After a few years of having not played any of these games, I picked up Heroes VII for cheap recently out of curiosity. I didn't expect much, but good lord... it feels like a glorified phone game.
After that disappointment, I decided to go back and try Heroes VI again because I never really gave it much chance. To my surprise, I found it quite a bit more enjoyable than VII, despite the departures in design.
