Yep. Looking for a stationary laptop experience with better performance basically. The keyboard is cause I type better on a laptop keyboard, and I type a lot. The screen is cause I'm happy with 14 inches, yes, would be looking for a new one.

Forget about the 14 inch, get a good monitor with good refresh rate (120, 144) and response time (1s).
Buy an 8 core i7 for gaming. Cut RAM to 16, cut it to 8 for budget purposes if need be, you can always add more later.
That's my final input for your thread, color me disinterested after DF happened. GL HF.

Worst thing you can do is to aggressively defend an uneducated opinion (you were bordering on that) and then throw a fit. You're close to doing that, Stevie  Why the denial? SLI/crossfire sucks. GPU>CPU for gaming. End of story. Those are facts, not opinions. If you're unsure why, I'll gladly provide you explanations based on proper sources. Just don't "play it smart". Don't nitpick, ffs. We're not here to argue about crap. We're here to help a fellow HCer. Providing wrong info isn't helping.
Poly, you'd probably enjoy a bigger screen after the initial shock period, they are valued for a reason. If jumping to 27 inch I propsed is too much for you, try 21 incher screens, I can find you a good one. I'm pretty sure nobody even produces gaming/multipurpose 14inchers anymore.

Better get yourself a case that comes with fans - your "chosen" PSU is quite capable of handling 20-30 extra Watts and better cooling is always a good thing. Besides, you might decide to get yourself an AMD which typically doubles as a house heating upgrade. 
Also, in case you're on the CPU/GPU fence - if you're building this primarily for gaming and fancy games with bombastic graphics, invest more in the GPU. For multi-purpose machine or you don't play games with "real-world graphics" - get a better CPU. The rest is dick-measurement competition, trust me.

Case with fans, got it. Gaming-wise there are a couple titles I want to try, but mostly HoMM 5. Apps I want in the future are MemoQ and Trados, for now Word Excel Powerpoint. Thought I'd try a pc instead of a laptop on the same budget and run with the performance difference. Basically if I get one with decent ports and an equivalent or better card than a geforce 960m I'm happy
Re: ports, where can I check that? Ideally 3 or more really fancy USB ports, hdmi port, headphone jack- 3.5mm I think, optionally sd card reader

USB ports are on the motherboard and sometimes on the case. SDs should normally use USB (2). Most up-to-date motherboards come with multiple USB standards, including... "fancy" ones.
Headphone and other audio ports are on the motherboard.
HDMI and other graphical ports are on the GPU.
Read their respective documentation, everything should be there. And by the way, if you decide to go with another CPU, make sure you get a motherboard with a matching socket.

If I switch to the Ryzen 2600, do I need to change anything else? I assume there would be conflicts otherwise. Also no way I'm buying 32 gb ram, half that is enough.
The motherboard. MSI b450-A Pro+ Ryzen 3600. Seems like the better deal without lost performance

I think the config Doom made you is pretty solid. You may not need such a powerful graphic card so you can cut down some of the expense there by going with a lower model, along the screen if you want it smaller.

Edit: Actually, if from his config you lower the graphic card, the Ryzen 3600 should enter your budget.

Poly, your recommended setting is fine too. I prefer EVGA over Corsair for PSU, however. EVGA has a more solid build and better warranty  The Radeon 5700 XT is an excellent price/performance GPU.
Personally I'm using a mechanical keyboard, the Coolermaster Masterkeys Pro S with Cherry MX Red. I used to use chiclet style keyboards earlier and was afraid about my typing speed, but it actually increased from 75 WPM to 80 WPM on the new keyboard because of how comfortable it is. I'd recommend it. Most people prefer tactile bumps, I feel very comfortable without one though (hence MX Cherry red switches) since they are the most natural progression from a "laptop style" keyboards IMO.

So has recently come to my attention that I need a wifi card. Thing is,the one I chose(based on customer star rating) costs exactly as much as a more expensive motherboard which has an integrated wifi card, the MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC. I'd be spending the same money, which is the better option? Leaning towards the better motherboard.
And I'm getting a small screen cause I'm not comfortable with larger screens. It will still be larger than what I'm used to

+1. If you're into gaming, GPU is a key. CPU can only give you a slight boost if you're already maxed out with a beefy GPU.

Do you? Always get the Ethernet right into your rig if you can. WiFi is only fine for browsing and emails, but forget about competetive gaming or video streaming.

If you're into old games, you may consider UHD or 4K screen. HoMM5 will still run fine in 4K with any modern GPU, but look better that it could at the day of release.

Sadly, cables are not an option due to the locations of my would be PC and the router. I really don't need a fancy screen though. Just for movies and some games

Since you're going for a 60Hz HD-panel you can make do with a way cheaper graphics card than 5700XT. GeForce 1660Ti is a good choice. For a bit cheaper card, RX580 is good. For even lower RX570 is amazing value for money. For a bit more money 5700 is a good choice. Also reference design 5700XTs are awfully loud and hot, so if you do want a 5700XT go for a partner model like the Sapphire Pulse instead, which is cool and quiet.
That means you can save money on graphics card now, buy a better CPU and then upgrade later when you if you want to get a larger resolution screen. This way you will get more value for your money since CPU effective lifetime(before it becomes too slow) is roughly ~7 years and GPU roughly ~3 years so if you don't plan on getting rid of it, planning for that is a good idea.
You said main workstation with a bit of everything. Unless you can specify your programsnvm, I can't read, you did. Ryzen 3600 is the best price/performance for the future and you don't need anything faster for your workloads. 2000-series Ryzen is going to bottleneck your system when you upgrade your GPU in 3-4 years time, while 3000-series will not so that's why a 3600 instead. Intel doens't compete in this price category so simply pass that by.
If you want a motherboard with wifi go for the MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon AC. It's expensive but it's also really good. If you can make do with a wifi add-in card go for the cheapest B450 motherboard with bios flashback, which is probably a MSI. They'll have weaker power delivery but that won't be an issue for 3000-series Ryzen.
Why you want USB Bios Flashback is that it means you can update the bios by simply plugging in an USB stick with the new bios that supports 3000-series Ryzen CPU and pushing a button. You don't have to pay the PC-vendor to update it for you.
16GB of decent speed(around 3000MHz) ram is solid, brand doesn't matter(all have infinite warranty.) You can upgrade to 32GB later by simply adding another two sticks if you were to need it.
For the case in your price category you can get a (somewhat)quiet case or a great cooling case. Not both. Pick one. Silverstone RL06 excellent for cooling, NZXT H500 is decent for quiet. Since you use speakers, I'd recommend a somewhat quiet one.
BUILD LIKE THIS is an example of a working computer(with windows included) without peripherals. In your budget this would still leave $400-450 worth for those. $200-250 for a screen, $100-150 for a set of stereo speakers and $50 for a keyboard sounds about right.
What concerns me is that you said this is your main workstation and you're going for a small screen. Do you have to carry the screen with you on travels? Can you not fit a larger one on your table? Because I'd highly recommend two screens or at least a larger one, it just makes your life SO MUCH easier. This is my work setup.
To leave more money for the dual screens, I'd go for a BUILD LIKE THIS INSTEAD.
