Very good. A solid brand. One of best alternatives for Heroes III if you want some another strategy style.

As with every title in the genre that reaches its 4th iteration, I guess the old world blew up and people traveled through portals to a new one.
Heroes IV comes to mind (ofc...), but what else?

Yeah, what else?

Updated F.A.Q.
https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/threads/regularly-updated-f-a-q-upd-27-01-23.1566405/
Will the dire penguin be back? Yes!
Will there be dragons in the game? Yes, AoW4 will feature mighty dragons, and we’ve done our best to make them look powerful and imposing on the battlefield. Next to dragons there are wyverns that can act as mounts for your heroes!
Will the game OST be available somewhere? The game soundtrack will definitely be available later, however, we are now not ready to share any details on the format. Many fans will be happy to hear the score is composed by Age of Wonders veteran Michiel van den Bos!
Will there be a campaign? Story and lore are very important in AoW4. The game is centered around Magehaven, from which the Godir travel to magical realms within the Astral Sea. The Godir are a cast of ancient Wizard Kings and newly ascended Mortal Champions, which together form the Pantheon.
The Godir venture to a variety of realms to investigate and conquer. Some of these realms are "Story Realms", which construct an unfolding plot. Through these Story Realms the campaign is integrated into the Pantheon system. You can compare the structure to an open world RPG, where our story Realms are like the main plot, and the other realms are more like side missions and/or exploring the wilderness of the universe.
We are going to have a dedicated Dev Diary with more details about Lore and Story Realms next week, Feb 2nd. Keep an eye on the Forum on Thursday!
Will different climates and environments affect the morale of races like in aow3? We have handled race-terrain interaction a bit differently in AoW4. Some race transformations give morale bonuses in certain terrain types. Frostlings are happier in the arctic, for example. Additionally, some races have traits that allow them to settle in inhospitable places, or develop abilities to harness environmental features in unique ways.
In Age of Wonders 2 there were these 4 shrines for the different spirits (nature, magic, order, war) where you could get quests and nice rewards from time to time. Are they coming back in some form? Age of Wonders 4 features an elaborate narrative event system that confronts your ruler with quests, leadership dilemmas, and boons coming from your empire or the larger world. Some of these events are centered around powerful entities connected to one of the game’s affinities (Nature, Astral, Chaos, Order, Shadow and Materium). Pending the affinities you pursue they may contact you with quests or boons testing your dedication to your affinity. So a different implementation but a similar concept!
Will there be an option for co-op in the campaign? The Story Missions are exclusively single-player, but players can of course play Special Challenge Realms in co-op.
Will everything presented during the show be available at the release? Generally speaking — yes. However, it is important to remember that everything we show now is a “work in progress” as we are doing our best to improve the game before release. So some things might be slightly changed in one way or another.
Will the game support modding? Will there be a map editor? The game will definitely support modding, however, the scope of modding tools is still being determined. While previous games can give you some understanding of what to expect, we highly recommend waiting for an official statement from the team — we’ll make it as soon as we have some news to share.
Will the game be available on Mac or GoG? At the moment we are not planning to release Age of Wonders 4 on Mac, sorry. GoG is now at the discussion stage so we are not ready to make any promises. In case of any changes, we will let you know on our Website, Steam, and social media channels!
Are we going to add more supported languages? You can see all supported languages listed on the Steam Store page. We are not planning to add any more languages for now, but we’ll keep you posted in case of changes!
How demanding the game will be? The team will do its best to provide the best performance possible and optimize the game so that more players could play it. You can check our Steam page for optimal and minimal specifications, but there is still a chance that we will be able to make them a little bit lower.
Where can I pre-order the game? Pre-orders are not available yet but you can Wishlist the game on Steam so that you don’t miss it! (which helps our promotion efforts as well!)

Sounds relatively good except for the "limited modding scope"... and I'm not sure how to feel about the campaigns integrated into some sort of hub meta-lore system, that doesnt tend to end up well.

So they break the spirit if not the letter of GOG with AoW3 having a sneaky form of DRM requiring registration to play LAN and online, sell out to Paradox, immediately start tracking old purchaser's information in AoW3, something we did not sign up for, and then make Planetfall a DLC-fest.
Now AoW4 comes along. Announcement trailer has Lennart Sas super excited to show off his baby and Jordi keeps interrupting him to move along, doubles down on the stealing your information (and refuse to admit it plainly when I ask for clarification, or treat me like a human despite prior amiable relationship with a number of developers) [This was Jordi who did it]). Then they make overtly political and divisive stances (fair enough) and ban all discussion of those decisions (not fair) [Jordi who locked it] and then they announce bonus gear if you sign up to the newsletter, pre-order bonus, and now at least 4 planned ahead DLCs.
Lennart Sas is one of my favourite game designers, but the business decisions of the company are horrible from a pro-customer perspective. (But maybe not pro-consumer). I boycotted Planetfall, and basically just asked to be treated like a human to consider ending my boycott for AoW4 and they didn't do that much.
It's a real shame.

Which part?
Data stealing/tracking/harvesting: Because you are paying someone to profit off of you, rather than them paying you back for it. And the trackers are not free. That's eating up your cpu cycles/ electricity and adding more room for bugs. AoW3 started crashing regularly for me and I was locked out of it for a while after they added in the data tracking. I still get error messages popping up.
DRM: Because GOG has an anti-DRM policy. If you buy a game on GOG you own it. You don't own AoW3. Once the company goes out of business/ gets bored of supporting paradox accounts, you'll be locked out of multiplayer (I'm sure fans/their last gasp will come up with some solution) but it shouldn't have been their to start with. Plus accounts are a real pain.
DLC upfront: Because it suggests they are cutting content to sell back to the player later.
Season Pass: Because they are asking you to gamble on an unproven product.
Pre-order bonus/news letter bonus: Those who come to the game late will get a lesser game. It is a desecration of the art. They are purposefully chopping apart their game to encourage their customers to go against their best interests and pre-order (buy a product which doesn't exist)
Lots of DLC planned: It means DLC is a model for making money rather than health expansions which add to the game. AoW3's expansions compliment it perfectly
Jordi being a customer service robot: The company doesn't care about their costumers and their issues and instead will say whatever it takes to make them shut up and go away. This is the tendrils of Paradox taking over ever more
Pushing a political message then refusing discussion let alone criticism: They are cowards looking for cheap hypocrisy points rather than standing by what they believe in.
Changing AoW3 years after it was purchased by the majority of its players and then refusing to make any concessions on the matter: It means they are completely untrustworthy, and we have no reason to believe they won't pull the rug under us again. Another reason why GOG's ability to own your own game is important. Because then you can keep whatever copy was the 'unruined' version and still keep the complete feature set.

Pre-ordered it on Sunday because I'm probably going to play it the next 5 years which means it's a steal.
