I said, it would be very doubtful from a legal point ov view, because moderators could so easily abuse their power.
On the other hand people have to learn that the internet isn't a place where you can afford to do everything without beging punished, ever.

I mean, take this a step farther - cyberspace, as envisioned in things like Shadowrun or others. If the "internet" becomes a level more "real" it becomes a level more obvious that people can't just do every jackass thing they can imagine.

People would be able to use the law for the most serious offenses.

Basically, the hope is, the internet can become a little bit more like real life. In the real world, it is impossible to enforce a law where everybody is nice to everybody and they don't give personal insults. But, there is such a thing as harassment, and there has been such a thing as harassment a long time before the internet or the internet 2.0 existed. If a person has a pattern of behavior that is interfering with another person's life, the person could take it to court. That would also be the idea on the internet where people have a public identity.

And, I do think, that if people actually have verifiable public identities, that will calm down a lot of vitriol. It's the anonymity that makes people so inclined to say things that they would never say in real life. It's like committing a crime during a large-scale riot instead of during a normal day. The huge riot gives you anonymity in the chaos and makes you do things that you otherwise would not do. Criminologists have known this for a long time. Not to mention people are potentially saying vitriol to minors, which again, is something they would never do if they had a public identity or if they were talking to the person in real life.

Meh, the definition of "hate speech" on the left. During decades people politely reminded that immigration from backward countries and cultures is not so good, maybe we should limit it or at least put some decent conditions. Nobody listened while it turned out to be a disaster - as expected, everywhere where it occurred : skyrocketing of criminality, illiteracy and massive unemployment. Loss of identity cohesion, dilution of secular culture in place, then two civilizations are now face to face.

And now that common sensed people have more than enough to headbutt a wall and start to rant more aggressively about, what the left does ? let's define a new felony, the "hate speech" so we can play deaf even longer (in reality we have no idea how to fix it so better hide the problem). Then pretend that if it doesn't work, it is our fault, we have a duty to educate those people and make them nice.

No, we don't. You move in, you adapt. Can't or don't want, go fly a kite back from where you come, you are of no good for us. Almost all countries concerned are progressively shifting to far right political spectrum for this reason, among others, so is only a matter of time to get back on rails.

Hoping the damages are not already irreversible, the situation looks enough noxious. And to hell with political correctness trying to muzzle people, it only artificially slows the inevitable outcome.

Look, you formulate like mass immigration is a graceful gift only executed out of generousity. Yes, of course immigrants should adapt, of course the laws and the culture should remain secular but you can not mass transform people’s minds from less developed countries and the reality is immigrants are allowed because they are in demand. And the cold fact about capitalism is illegal immigrants are cheaper and they have less rights (hence less choice regarding work conditions), so a lot of people who hire them, prefer them. They live in different neighborhoods anyway. It is your working class and middle class who are mostly in conflict. Yes, overzealous execution of hate speech and so on is an attempt to handle that situation, not a great way either, but it is the situation at your hand.

More developed countries have low birth rates, people live a long retirement, welfare state is solid and there aren’t enough local people willing to do the snowty jobs with the snowty pay. Not to mention, the movement of capital itself is transnational at this point and suggesting to suck dry less developed countries resources, outbuying their national companies with tech giants etc, meanwhile not allowing tne work force to be transnational as well is not a sustainable system. Such level of unbalanced accumulation will lead to havoc, uprising and war. You cant have your cake and eat it, too.

I mean, you know I’m not a communist or anything like that but this is what capitalism has evolved into. You cant have the good ol’ nation states with air tight borders with such demographical and sociological settings. I agree that putting a muzzle on complaints is not the way to go but those complaints will be there as potential gasoline to fire in a situation you can not change with a finger snap. What can the far-right do? Mass deport all the immigrant work force?

Despite all the problems you listed and serious reaction from voters, why do you think states keep letting all the illegal immigrants in? I mean, they could use military force to stop it in an instant if they wanted to. You think it’s because of high humanitarian ideals?

It's not about control, but about avoiding abuse. What do you think why our times are called "post-truth"? Too many pewople are naive and gullible. Just think about - how many e-mails did you get this year with some message about having to verify a link or else ...? That YOU of course deleted immediately. But if noone would ever click on these links they wouldn't mass-send these things. Think about the mass hacks with facebooks...

The thing I say, which I repeat, is that the people who earn billions with social media - like Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk (and Donald Trump) and ... and should be held accountable for doing more for
security
fact-checking
moderating

And that's only on first look.
The can't just wash their hands off of it - not our problem.
And think about what it means that two people owning social media worked together in an election. I mean, what works in a positive way in, say Iran, will work in a negative way as well.

You are an immigrant from Romania, if I'm not wrong.

I guess you know what reputation Romanians have within the EU, do you? All criminals. Gangs controling house break-ins and car theft EU-wide. Guess what nationality EU citizens would throw out of the EU if they could?

And YOU, as a Romanian, who was allowed immigration to France now argues the way you do? How entitled can anyone feel?

And just as a reminder - the people coming from a ex-French colony have a constitutional right not only to immgrate into France, but also to become a French citizen.
The fact that YOU, as a Romanian, are allowed to live in France would be second to that - if it wasn't for the EU.

A little humility would probably become you.

Is enough to read the BS Wikipedia became, politically speaking, to get that fact checking is as biased and hypocrite as the opinions is supposed to "fact-check". Is a joke where a random mustache makes you Hitler in the minute.

So far, USA doesn't consider "hate speech" as an offense and things go rather well, then every-time you ask someone complaining about hate speech, he comes with peanuts like "he said a woman can not become a man, therefore I SAY is hate speech", or "he said no more illegal aliens, therefore I SAY he hates all migrants, preferably color skinned". People need to grow a skin, or stay away from platforms.

Is rather simple : the mainstream can't handle the alternative medias where everyone is placing his bets, for the worse and the best. Because NOW they get fact-checked too, then debunked. So they will have to reinvent themselves and, let's hope, start to deliver some reality instead of the reality they wish to see. Or they may close as well - already losing millions, because what they did for years was to constantly deliver "hate speech" against Trump and the MAGA voters (deplorable, garbage, fascism, racism, misogyny blah blah). It goes both ways you know, depends from where are you looking from.

See, I am the type of migrant the left hates, because he doesn't need their moral assistance/ascendance, then the arrogance and veiled racism.
The migrant who assimilates so well that he considers now the interests of this country above his own interests. Remember what I said in 2020 : when minorities/migrants shift away from left and start vote right, the game is over, because the only way to keep majority is control them, by both identity politics and affirmative actions.  Remembering them - as you do here - that they are and will remain different, inferior, and will never be uncoerced responsible citizens. No wonder you want to shut anyone not thinking like you then, its survival instinct.

No, you are just the equivalent of an ex-smoker who now cries murder whenever he gets a sniff of smoke into his nose. See, that phenomenon that a certain type of converts is more orthodox than the othodoxy. More papal than the Pope, as the saying goes.
That's all that's to it, sorry to burst your bubble.
Or if you prefer - there are those who indeed made a fortune tell everyone that anyone who really wants it can do the same and that anyone who doesn't is just lazy. You know, the typical "what I did everyone can and everyone who doesn't is just trash".
THAT's what you are and that's why the left despises vour type of person in general. Because they spread the delusional lie that no one needs help and everyone who doesn't cope without is dead weight, the proof being "I managed, so everyone can".

You can't even admnit that you wouldn't where you are without 1) the end of the Warsaw Pact; 2) Romania becoming a member of the EU; 3) general illwill against Romanian people (as opposed to "immigrants") isn't filtering through to you.
The latter, mind you, is part of the EU-tiredness of Western European population because of the "East European dead weight" they have to carry.

Instead you support a guy who allies with and supports the worst type of dictators, like Kim and Assad.
What if you were migrated from Ukraine instead of Romania?

And even if it is the same rate of pay, there's just not enough interested workers to fill the vacancies, unless you have legal or illegal immigrants do it, because the dollar goes a long way when those workers send some money to family back home.

@sal:

There is such a thing as hate crime, but it's not used very often and it takes a lot of evidence to land a conviction with it. There were cries in the Minnesota court after George Floyd to have Derek Chauvin charged with hate crime, but it never happened, let alone a conviction.

In France we have about 7000 hate speech offenses in justice every year. That's 20 a day. At that rate, is not like they pop in the eyes, is that there is a constant online track for them, you have full time associations and political groups, thousands of people, making a living from it. It is business.

Eh... now that the election is over and the results are in, I don't think it really matters who RFK endorsed. Endorsements in general barely ever move the needle, because people are going to vote who they are going to vote for. They (meaning the Harris campaign managers) also tried to bring out Obama for awhile so that Harris could piggyback some of his charisma for voters (particularly male black voters who are hemorrhaging from the Democratic core base of voters) and it didn't have much of an impact at all.

Now that the election is over, it's clear that if the Democrats wanted to stand any chance, they needed to have an actual primary election, and even then they probably would have lost.

I am sincerely curious how this strange new administration is going to function, or if it is going to hold together at all, because you've got a recent ex-Democrat, you've got an independent and JFK's nephew, you've got Ramaswamy who is really a libertarian registered as a Republican, and you've got Musk, who is basically there to facilitate the purge of federal employees. And then there's Vance as the VP, who is smarter and more articulate than his boss. They are held together by a mutual rejection of the establishment, but ideologically, they are all different people, and Trump already had a very high turnover of staff when he was president 2016-2020. It's probably the most rebel-like presidential cabinet since the cabinet was made up of literal rebels. And then on top of it there's the looming question if there will be more assassination attempts.

The Trump honeymoon won't last long, because people are going to discover that lowering the cost of goods is easier said than done. It sure as **** won't happen by manufacturing stuff in the USA; as much as I wish that were the case, it ain't gonna happen. Trump campaign promise is "I'm going to tariff China" and Trump campaign promise is also "I'm going to make things cheaper." Mmmhmmm. Kay. It's the sort of stuff you say in order to win discontent voters, which it did. It worked.

Lowering corporate taxes would help with inflation on certain things, but that lost revenue would need to be made up somehow. There's really no easy fix, which isn't something voters like to hear. If making stuff cheap was easy, everybody would be doing it. Resolving the war in Ukraine and removing the sanctions on Russia would help a little, but that might still be years away, and a lot of Westerners still have the pipedream idea that Ukraine can regain its lost territory, which ain't gonna happen.

The country as a whole just needs to spend more time with relationships and hobbies and less on buying stuff, but that is a cultural challenge more than it is a political one.

It’s hard to say what will happen to the USA, but the USA of the 60s, 70s, 80s is part of world mass culture - films, brands, etc. Harley Davidson, Lucky Strike, etc. Even knowing that the United States is an enemy of my country (Russia), I would not want the United States to turn into the crazy something that it began to turn into under the power of the globalists.

Yeah brands, etc

When expensive, etc So another company goes to bankruptcy, because of expensive or something etc

Think about 1950's Finland producted Finnish brands, and a very rare and a few foreign brands, it were very expensive! And the Soviet protected their companies, so only one brand..

Today you know the Macallan, and so etc Why? The rich have money, and it can't go to monopoly.. They waste their money..

Another reason, if people buy so too much, economics goes down.. So expensive brands help and keep equal..

When you buy the only product from your market, so it rises price, etc

Ok

I guess more important then winning was, to the DNC, to conclude that they were too much to the left of the electorate, so they can protect their donors from any "progressive candidates".
To me, what they did to Marianne Williamson was closer to censorship.
