Letting the enemy go
Greetings, heroes
After a long, long time failing to access to this forum (due apparently to a strange error on my Internet Provider) I've managed to log in just today, from my office. I hope my presence will be permanent again...
I've read the first page of the posts in the HOMM4 dedicated forums and no one seems to mention a doubt I have had since the first time playing HOMMIV:
When an enemy army offers to surrender to me, I can logically accept its offering or reject it. When I accept, the "cash" is immediately counted on my "bank". No problem at this point.
But when I want to totally destroy the army by rejecting the surrending offer, sometimes they fight and sometimes they leave the battlefield. Does this mean they have chosen the old "Retreat" option and lost all its creatures?? I suppose that's what they do, but I'm looking for a confirmation from somebody else.
Regards, and good fight

Yes, I believe they use the flee option.
I saw somewhere that the Charm or possibly Diplomacy skill of the heroes involved in the fight will affect the outcome.
For this reason when an enemy flee they could acutually have been surrendering, but their heroes have better Charm/Diplomacy skill than you so you are disallowed to turn down the offer.
The same goes for you if you want to surrender/flee. If your skills are better the creatures you fight cannot reject your surrender.
Anybody who has tried this out with more details?

Thanks to all for the responses
To Djive: your explanation makes sense to me. Now I understand why creatures without a hero aren't allowed to retreat, and that's an extra value to charm/diplomacy. As I play the game, I'm starting to use heroes in every army, except for scouting parties...
To Hexa: Thanks. Whatever was the access problem it seems to have disappeared, and it's nice to be back. Now I face a legion of unread postings... Patience.
