Listen here..
Once,in a hotseat game ia attacked an enemy.
It was a long battle I only ended with a hero(low life and no mana) and about 20 air elementals(summoned).Normally the elementals disapeared after combat!
The next turn my enemy(who was human) had a spare army of 6 crusaders. He attacked my remaining army.
But........
He instantly won. There were no casualities ,i didn't retreat or surender. The combat screen didn't even apear, and he took my hero to his prison.
What the hell happened???

dead people
A question about dead heros:
If a hero is killed and there is still something left in the army, the army can take the hero's tombstone to a town or sanctuary and have him brought back to life.
But if a hero and all of the army is killed, there is a grave marker put onto the gameboard. What can be done then?
I know that if I stand on the grave marker of a fallen hero of another alignment, I can snatch his artifacts.
I have yet to have one of my heros die in the field to test what happens when I step on his grave marker. Can I pick him up and take to a town or sanctuary to have him brought back to life?
Is there any way to get the fallen hero of another color? In HOMM3, dead heros went back into the pool of possibles -- but that does not seem to be the way HOMM4 works.

what I was wondering is how to dismiss a hero(without having to run him/her into an impossible fight)
And how can i see howmuch experience is needed to reach the next level?

I tried the same using multiple different approaches, without effect. I assume it can't be done, unless through a not yet discovered bug.

Dismissing heroes can't be done. If you want to get rid of one, you just crash into an impossible fight. You want to get rid of hundreds of potions/useless artifacts, give 'em to one lvl 1 creature and do the same (you get them back if you decide to destroy the hostile stack later)
Amount of exp needed to level up can be seen on the hero stat screen, right clicking the total amount of exp.

Have you noticed that whirlpools are a lot more expensive in HOMM4 than they were in HOMM3?
In HOMM3, the whirlpool took part of the weakest stack. Thus you could put a single halfling or some other level 1 creature there and lose almost nothing.
In HOMM4, the whirlpool is taking 10% of *every* stack, rounded up to the next whole number. Thus if you have two titans in a stack, you lose one!

Getting rid of heroes:
Why? If you don't want them, station them at a mine or something! Since mines can be guarded exactly like garrisons, you can forget about them ... this is common treatment for Lords, and sometimes Druids (but with Druids you have to remember if you're to benefit from summoned creatures.)
If they get killed in battle, you could drop their tombstone about five steps from a castle of yours; then if you ever want to use them again, you could hire a single L1 creature to go, pick them up, and bring them back to the castle. (It's done through the 'armies meeting/separating' screen.) Note that hero tombstones, like artifacts and potions, and unlike HOMM4 creatures, can be 'chained'!
Whirlpools:
Yes, I have noticed the increased losses, and I was annoyed! It cropped up in 'The End of the World' by kevyip (good map, btw) - I reloaded and eventually found another way to the same place.

Do you benefit from the lord's gold and mining abilities when he is guarding a mine or a garrison? I think I confirmed that you do *not* get those bonuses when he is stationed inside a castle -- only if he is stationed outside.
Do heros who are guarding a mine or garrison count towards the limit (8?).

=> I've seen that you do benefit from Estates and Mining when hero is in garrisons. However, you don't see this income in the kingdom overview, but you do get the money.
=> When it comes to Peasants you don't get their 1 gold/day unless they are in one of your 8 armies. So in that case you really lose the money.
The limit is for armies on the overland maps. Any heroes/creatures in any type of garrison (mines, garrison, towns) do not count as an army.
The way to determine this is by looking at the portraits to the right, which represents your wandering armies. These and only these armies count towards your 8 army limit.

In the hero window (where it shows your artifacts and stuff...), right click on the experience symbol near your exp points!
==================
How do you know how much experience you got from a battle besides looking at ur exp before the battle and after?
