I find it rather odd that people say "going for money is stupid as the gold is just laying around on the map". That all depends on the map you're plying on. What if there are no money buildings, gold piles around and all you get from chests are 500 golds ? Going for the creatures on week 1 on a map like this leaves you unable to buy the creatures because you will have no gold.
If you can't find the gold on the map then the guy going for the capitol first starts having the advantage by the end of week 3 not month 3.

Absolutely true! You will surely enjoy your capitol when killed on second week because the other recruited what he could, while you have nothing but an undefended bank

In theory you are correct. But in reallity its very, very rare to not have anything to colect on the map.
What kind of map (template) it will be, if there is nothing on it?

I have read most of the messages and I just want to underline one thing:
If there is a "best strategy" in any strategy game, then its not a strategy game.
Every decision depends on the situation, and ends with different results.
Although I myself like to go to Capitol first, I think going for the creatures is more professional and more beneficial if you are good player and you dont get unlucky.
Capitol is safer, specially on large maps. You dont take much risk, and you will have a nice army to be offensive during mid-game.
At the end, both strategies are hugely depends on lots ond lot of different parameters, and every decision is dicey a little.

No, creatures are always better.

Exactly. I would say if ALL strategies in a strategy game are similarly effective, then it is not a strategy game. It's better to go for creatures. Detailed strategy that is the most useful for the specific map depends on resources, gold, dwellings, etc, but going for capitol before creatures is never a good option(unless you make a custom map being totally empty)

Umm but I didn't said "Every strategy is the same", but "Every strategy depends on the situation". No strategy is better, you choose them by considering map details or other information.

Yes. Going for Capitol is a safe and rewarding option for those not yet able to sustain minimal casualties when fighting with starting army. The map also could have only high level stacks around starting base, then you go for Capitol as well. Some people could choose to play with magic heroes, so they pick all chests as experience, then need Capitol.
All in all, in multiplayer, human vs human, the maps are designed in such way that you need to go monsters first, no other option or you lose.
If not multiplayer, play as you like. After several weeks of single game play, the difference between "go capitol" or "go monsters" will be insignificant.
Also there are nuanced options, when playing rampart you will be dumb to go Capitol without building elves first, no matter the situation. Same for Castle's archers, or wiverns, or thunderbirds. This way, you mix benefits from both strategies.

For Wog the landmine hero+master gremlin is a pretty neat early combo, if not overpowered.
You can fill the whole map with landmines in seconds & if you got slow and leadership even better... (Not sure if expert fire makes it even faster that would be so OP.)
