Maybe not a hero
Maybe there wouldn't be engineer heroes, but a secondary skill engineering.

Skill
Its odd i never even thought of it being a skill
That would work and every level would make it cheaper and more buildings. you need to have a hero with engineer skill to adance castle to optimum levels. ie new units and such
basic engineering = can build roads (adv. map) build level 1-3 unit upgrade buildings (castle)
advanced eng = build garasins (adv. map) upgrade level 4-5 units (castle)
expert eng = plant mines; destroy mountains (adventure) (upgrade lvl 6; build damage endusing moat; allow capital (castle)
something like that You with me ?

Wouldn't it be a little too powerful to be able to destroy mountains on the adventure map?

not really i mean whats the differece between this and Dimension door? sure its permanent but still you will have to have played for quite some time to get expert engineering and it would cost money eh. lots and lots of money +it would add ore just came to me

Hi, Draco,
Engineer is a good idea. I think it should be a skill rather than a hero class.
As I've seen from some source (forget the origin, it seems from somewhere told by Angelspit, just can't remember )
In h4, u cannot just flag a mine and then wait for the resource, u have to build something to make the mine start production. Maybe this is the place for engineer skill: can open mines with less cost and can give higher production. (or maybe it should be a "miner" skill ???)
For engineer to build road, garrison, upgrade structure is cool. But to destroy mountain seems to be too much for me. How about bridge ?? It seems that bridge maybe be allowed in h4.

hmmmm........
maybe destroying mountains would take some time (a week? two?) Also, I thought of a few more things engineers should be able to do.
Basic:can build roads, can build 1-3 upgrade buildings in castle, is able to start production in mine.
Advanced:build garrisons, upgrade 4-5 castle units, able to start production in mine with optimum efficiancy, can build up to 5 tile bridges, can build shipyard (inside of castle, if castle is not next to water you must send a hero to carry it to water
Expertlant mines, destroy mountains, can upgrade all levels of creatures in castle, build damage inducing moat, allow capitol, can build up to 10 tile bridges, can build external creature dwellings, can build shipyard (outside of castle), can set build mines
Maybe there would be certain areas on the map where there would be resources of a certain type and that would be the only place that a hero with exp. engineering could build a mine of that type.

good ideas..
thou some of those couldnt work that well..
the best thing to build is a garrison, it should cost time and money and be restricted to some places (cant build it just anywhere).
The second level of the skill could be to build random creature summon. Expert engineering could allow the player to build teleports.. rather one-way i think.
building most other buildings could disturb the game alot, and would have to be concidered when editing maps.
the player shoudl be also limited to a certain amount of buildings (only one teleport) but could always delete the built ones (yet this operation might also cost something).

Key
The key to making a engineer skill is decifering (prob shouldnt use big words if i cant spell em eh?) the time period needed for each object. obviously opening a mine will take less time then a garrasin. A hero (CID) master engineer could start with basic engineering and a special of engineering (-10% build time) well? what do y ahtink?

NO!!!
No there should not be a skill or anything like engineering. To remove a mountain....no !!
You can't do that.
And there is a BIG diffrence between dimension door and engineering. Like you said the mountain will then be gone forever !!
That is a bad idea. I sure hope that no one from 3DO like this idea. If they read it that is. Not that I think they do, but still. If someone actually does read this I hope he hates the idea, like I do.
Nothing personally.

I agree with the engineering being a skill rather than unit.If they were a unit they would took some space, but that is such a waste 'cause you can fill it with something much cooler.
But hero with expert engineerig could upgrade some low level units to engineers(something like Gelu with sharpshooters)and then you will have some extra bonuses.

the hero idea is over its settled it is a skill. however mountains must stay maybe you could build some mountain pass or something that would be hidden and cost lots of time to pass through. (you can normaly go though mountains i would like at 05% normal speed) with mountain pass you move at 50% movement

Ok here is why the engineer skill destroying mountains would never work in heroes.
Heroes is as much an adventure game as a strategy game, and it achieves this mostly by creating barriers that you cannot cross, to influence which direction you go in, and maintain the integrity of the story. It's true that fly and dimension door can screw this up as well, however that can be controled by simply not allowing those on the map. Having the ability to destory obstacles would screw up at least half of the good heroes maps that are out there.
This is also why we will never see the ability to create new castles in heroes.
I could see an engineer skill as long as it didn't create new map structures and only reduced the cost of building town structures. But that would probably be too weak in late game and too strong in early game to be balanced.

No engineers!
I agree with Nightshade: Walls or mountains are a very important element of strategy games. They shouln't be removed.
Besides, engineers to build up roads, mines, and change terrain? --> Go play Civilization!!!

Strategy games

Sure walls and mountains are very important... but why can then be passed through?
I talked in other thread about "The Ancient Art of War". It's a very old game, i'm not sure if it's turn based or not, but mountains, hills, rivers, forest and any rough terrain could be passed through at the risk of losing some or all your troops (much like triremes sailing in open seas in Civilization). This was a history based strategy game. HOMM, as i've said many times, it's a fantasy based strategy game. But even looking through fantasy logic i can't find an explanation to unpassable terrain.
Why don't give magic ropes to help troops climb or a magic axe to help troops move through a forest and so on... Unpassable terrain should be only the ones which have been blocked magically, something like a permanent dome of force.
I guess HOMM designers fixed terrain to prevent deeper levels of strategy reasoning about them. I mean one less variable to think about at the time of making your decisions, and strategy games is about decisions after all.
In HOMM you just have to decide which to build, which troops recruit, where to go and who/when attack... That's all. There's nothing else. I don't mean this makes the games easier, but makes it less deep.
In other strategy games you also have to decide where are you going to raise you new settlements and how are you going to defend them and have to take care of you citizenry mood and the like. It's not just trying to demolish your enemy as soon as posible, before that you have to build a strong empire...
Opinions?
