vlord! giants and crusaders and archangels and black dragons etc r good stuff too but if in terms of contribution then i think sprites and maybe blue santas r crucial for development. gold mine week 1

Funny how people talk about the Angel to Arch-Angel upgrade.
I usually don't upgrade to Archs because Angels alone are pretty damn good. Probably the best non-upgraded level 7 unit.
Units I ALWAYS or almost always upgrade before even buying any creatures:
- Giants to Titans.
- Gremlins to Master Gremlins.
- Vampires to Vamp Lords.
- Walking dead to Zombies. (Walking dead are way too slow)
- Dendriods to Den Soldiers. (Dendriods way too slow)
- Dwarfs to Battle dwarfs. (Dwarfs too slow)
- Gorgons to Mightys.
- Pixies to Sprites.
- Firebirds to Phoenixes.
- Behemoths to Ancients.
- Harpies to Harpy Hags.
- Ogres to Magis.
- Hell Hounds to Cerebus.
Most other units I don't upgrade unless later if I have lots of gold and/or resources.

best upgrade for me must be Psychic Elemental to Magic Elemental because of +5 hp, +5 dmg, +2 speed and Magic immunity

in one on one, the devil is better if I remember well. and probably in many other cases.
that's funny you upgrade zombies but not angels 
ok they are already very strong, but you gain +50 HPs, +10 attack, +10 defense, resurrection and +6 speed. I doubt you gain that much with zombies
did someone said raiders ? their damage increases by more than 100%. I'm not sure even crossbowmen, elves and crusaders gain that much.

Ya I guess its funny on my preference of upgrades. I don't think I really understand what the best upgrades are too make.
I don't keep track of the numbers all that much, seems like too much to remember. I usually just go by feel and my experiences.
Maybe I never realized the large improvement from angels to archs. I always thought the devil to arch devil was a better uprgade because it seems to me its harder to keep the devils alive rather than angels.
I also had no idea the psychic - magic elemental upgrade was so much of a difference.
And also ya the wolf raider upgrade is a very good one too.
For sure I know heroes 4 better than I know 3.

I would think it's easier to keep devils alive than angels. they have no retaliation

Its a joke about two players with very different level of knowledge of the game. I hope nobody got offended.

Hey just because I don't know a lot about all the upgrade improvements don't mean I lack a lot of knowledge of the game. That is just one area of the game. I was able complete a few maps on impossible so I can't be that bad right?
The way I see things is that I'd rather purchase higher level dwellings before bothering with upgrades. I see more importance in getting the top level creatures as quickly as possible and using good strategies to expand. Upgrading can come later and if you can afford it. A map can be won without doing any upgrading at all.

How about bone dragon => ghost dragon? Could imagine some unlikely scenario where aging + lots of instant damage (or no cure-dispell) would be more useful than anything else.

Crusaders (+3 att, +1 min/max dmg, attacks twice)
Champions (+1 att/def, +5min/max dmg)
Naga Queen (+10 dmg)
Mighty Gorgon (1 att, 2 def, Death stare)

Vampire-Vampire Lord(life drain)
Black Knight-Dread Knight(the best lvl 6 creature in the game,with double damage it can deal higher damage than some basic lvl 7,luck+double damage=slaughter)
Bone Dragon-Ghost Dragon(aging ability makes the ghost dragon even more dangerous than other lvl 7 creatures)
Swordsman-Crusader(strikes twice)
Archer-Marksman(shoots twice) elves-grand elves for the same reason
Red Dragon-Black Dragon(totally magic immunity)
Genie-Master Genie(not the stats,but the blessing casting ability makes them very good support units)
Gorgon-Mighty Gorgon(awesome ability)

hmm...
1. Giant-Titan (shooting)
2. Gremlin-Master Gremlin (shooting)
3. Pit Fiend-Pit Lord (can't demon farm otherwise )
4. Vampire-Vampire Lord (no comment needed)
5. Gorgon-Mighty Gorgon (no comment needed)
I guess I put them in the order I did because I saw this as most increasing the usefulness of the unit...in this way, giants and gremlins are fairly useless until you upgrade them and then they become fairly good, whereas vampires and gorgons were already fairly good units, whose upgrade simply manages to make them OP.

1. Vampirelord (incredibly strong)
2. Wolf Raider/Crusader/Marksman/Grand Elf (cheap upgrade, twice as good as before)
3. Mighty Gorgon (the wonderful death stare)
4. Ancient Behemoth (from crappy to uberstrong)
5. Harpy Hag/Cerberus (gains no retaliation)
I do not put as much regard into the master gremlin and titan.
You can basically defeat the same stacks with unupgraded gremlins using them as "close combat shooters" (one single gremlin takes retal, big stack hits for the kill). It's not as comfortable, but it works.
And once I have a real army with nagas and magi, I dont care about gremlins anymore, upgraded or not...
And Titans... They are soooo expensive I seldom find the money to get them AND the rest of the troops I want (Magi, Nagas Queens,...).
So I often stick with Giants who are not really good, but they can do some fighting for low money...
I always have a bad feeling upgrading them... Is it really worth all the money?
Takes at least a full utopia to convince me I now have enough gold...

Giant to Titan is the best upgrade. The strongest shooter must have a good price, but at the time you upgrade the Giants you'll have many resources in your treasury.
