Peasant --> Skeleton

HP increase by 600%, A increase by 500%, D by 400%, maximum damage increased by 300%, and even a speed increase

In terms of price and everything, I think ancient behemoths is definetely up there, a feared unit indeed.

Level 1: Gremlins to Master Gremlins, because they shoot which doesn't make them useless.
Level 2: Archers to Marksmen. They shoot twice, and how many Level 2 creatures does that? Exactly, none.
Level 3: Wood Elves to Grand Elves OR Griffins to Royal Griffins. Grand elves shoot twice but Royal Griffins are so powerful in a stack of over 100.
Level 4: Magis to Arch Magis. Powerful in a stack with over 50+. Also shoots.
Level 5: Pit Fiend to Pit Lords OR Genies to Master Genies. Pit Lords: because they can make Demons out of dead allies. Master Genies: I don't use these to attack, I use them to buff my Level 6 or Level 7 creatures.
Level 6: Black Knight to Dread Knight (?). So much more powerful than Black Knights, looks 20% more cooler and, overall, better.
Level 7: Angels to Archangels OR Red Dragon to Black Dragon. Angels: Angels are so useless, sure, they fly over obstacles but in a stack of 5 and they attack, they are pretty much useless. They also don't have alot of health. Archangels on the other hand can resurrect, and in a stack of 5 they are pretty much unbeatable if they are split up. Black Dragon: Spell Immunity against ALL spells. Just get a few of them, get the spell Armageddon together with Expert Fire Magic and go around and troll everyone

Giant-2-Titan is the best upgrade if you have a fort on the hill somewhere near your Tower. Free thunderstrucks for your opponent from the 2nd week is ultimative.

1. Gremlin - Master Gremlin
2. Harpy - Harpy Hag (tough choice though, Wolf Riders and Archers are both great contenders)
3. Elves - Grand Elves (honourable mention to Hell Hounds)
4. Really tough, as it seems all towns but Fortress and Inferno get very valuable upgrades at this level. Necro takes it, though, with Vampires - Vampire Lords
5. Gorgons - Mighty Gorgons (again, some tough competitors. Pit Fiends, Genies, and Rocs all get awesome upgrades)
6. Black Knight - Dread Knight
7. Tough choice between Angel - Archangel and Giant - Titan. I'm going to go for Giant - Titan, though, because Angel is still an awesome unit, whereas Giants are a little underwhelming.

Both of the best upgrades are in Tower: Gremlin to Master Gremlin and Giant to Titan.

For sure giant to titan is a better upgrade than angel to arch. Angels are still useful and strong but giants basically suck.
Giant to titan is the best level 7 upgrade in my opinion. But for the other levels I'm not sure, and is debatable.
Red dragons are still good too to not upgrade, because you can cast resurrection on the red dragons, but you can't on the blacks.

since it has much more Hp and doesnt die against weak opponents

ogre to ogre magi is decent for spell casting, same for genie.

The zombie and dwarf upgrade is also good since... it makes the unit a bit useful. They are too slow before the upgrade, you know.

Edit: Gorgon upgrade of the swamp town is also great

So I posted my opinion on the best for each level a while ago...now I'm going to post my personal worst for each level and why.

Level 1: Imp -> Familiar. From my experience, it's just bad...because imps biggest draw is for pit lord demon fodder, and familiars are tougher to kill, so less useful for it. Even with the mana leech...just...I don't like it.

Level 2: Gog -> Magog. Pretty simple, they're nearly unusable, if not completely so, beyond round 1 or 2 of combat. This is the only "upgrade" in the game where the unit actually is WORSE after being upgraded. I mean, what were they THINKING!? (Dishonorable mention: Walking dead -> Zombies, seeing as how I NEVER keep my zombies as such, just chuck them in the skelly transformer)

Level 3: Orc -> Orc Chieftain. Now this is really because there are only two units that gain ONLY stats and not abilities, and Orcs gain less than Beholders, I think. Correct me if I'm wrong, and I will edit this. The upgrade is still actually quite decent, just it's up against some really good ones.

Level 4: Demon -> Horned Demon. Again, still alright, but the stat gains are just too small compared to the rest of the level 4 guys...also it's going to be several times the cash spent on it since you raise so freaking many.

Level 5: Dendroid Guard -> Dendroid Soldier. I just...yeah, they're horrible for anything other than defending against a siege when not upgraded...but the upgrade doesn't do anything for that...and on top of that, it's hard to tell the difference between the two.

Level 6: Manticore -> Scorpicore. Even if you have the paralysis added, it just doesn't strike very often, and the unit still doesn't last nearly as long as you'd like.

Level 7: Hydra -> Chaos Hydra. Basically, adds nothing new and doesn't improve the stats as much as other upgrades. With level 7, the upgrade should really add something AMAZING. Hydras and Chaos Hydras just can't compete...although it is by no means BAD.

Note: This is all just my opinion.

Note 2: I only considered the improvement on the unit, not the strength of the unit itself.

Theres no point anyway so:

Come on! The enemy can't cluster it's units together which leaves them more open for efreets and devils. How is that not the most awsome thing ever?

They usually do not want to cluster anyways since this leaves them vulnerable to meteor and mass berserk though.

1 - Master Gremlins I suppose
2 - Wolf Raiders/Harpy Hags - for some reason I lean toward Hags, cuz their utility is greater for early game purposes, not saying WR are that far behind though - later in the game WR are devastating for sure.
3 - Dragon Flies - not sure why, dspell+weakness combo is really good + these insects gain the initiative in most fights
4 - Crusaders or Vampire Lords, can't decide
5 - do you even need to ask Mighty Gorgons baby <3
6 - Efreet Sultans (gains quite a bit of speed)/Naga Queens/Dread Knights
7 - BlackDragons/ArchAngels/Anc Behemoths
