Sebian PM killed

Our Prime Minister Zoran Djincic was shot yesterday outside the government building.

He was reformist, pro-western politician and key figure in arresting Milosevic. Although never the most popular here, we have no better man for his position.

This is great loss for Serbia.
Our government has declared three days' mourning.

Yeah, I saw this. It was all over the news yesterday. Not an everyday event, exactly...

Was it the mafia who killed him? I remember something about the mafia being mentioned.

Yes.

Although often being accused of having contacts with the local mafia( even called "godfather" by his political opponents ),Zoran was obviously the mafia's greatest enemy. A number of criminals, including the biggest names, were to be arrested these days.

It's hard to explain why a PM was such a key figure for his country. Yes, the assassination of a premier would be a great issue anywhere in the world. But here in Serbia, Zoran was not just a PM, he was the incarnation of Hope for many.

For all the people on this forum, he may be just a piece of bad news... Another foreign name you find hard to spell and pronounce. Nothing more, I guess. Well, I could describe him as our J.F. Kennedy... A young, idealistic but capable leader who would lead its country out of the dark.

Personally, he was one of my heroes. I'm 26 and have no idols, but I think "hero" is the word. And one's heroes should never die, you know? Grandparents, parents, neighbours, even old school friends die. Your heroes should grow old with you. Whenever it seems hopeless, you know there are your heroes to make things right. Now we must live in a world without Zoran.

I'm not going to be so condescending or trite to pretend that I know how the Serbian people must feel but I do know that this is very bad news and all my sympathy goes to you right now.

My sympathies go out to you and to Serbia.  I will say this, though.  The US made tremendous progress in civil rights reform and in social policy reform shortly after a reform-minded president, JFK, was assassinated.  Sometimes, a martyr can bring about great good.  I hope that's the case for you and your country.

Dushan and others from Serbia --

Deepest sympathies, friends.  While it is wonderful to be able to dialogue with people from all nations, it is also regrettable that our world still ails from this deplorable violence and its destabilizing effects.  Our radio source here in the U.S, National Public Radio, said many great things about this man yesterday.  Like bort, I will not pretend to know the first thing about the details and dynamics or how your nation might feel, but we wish you the best, and hope the resulting damage is minimal.  Our hearts, best wishes and prayers are with you.

Perhaps one day all our dialoguing in fora like this one will make some small dent in the forces that divide us...

I for one hope deeply for this.

Thanks, everybody...

In case somebody's interested in what's going on, Serbian police have arrested 350 criminals so far, from major drug taycoons to a pop music star to local thugs. The main person behind the assissination is still free, though.

Vlaad -- sorry I ommitted your name from my last post -- it dawned on me after the fact that clearly you are from there too.

I was just at Attack Iraq thread.  It might be a waste of time, but you might tell daRgON a few real-life facts about this dam thing we're starting.  I am despairing.  Just sent some personal messages to PH and others saying how sorry I am on behalf of my thick-headed country, and hope to whomever that this thing does not have very negative ramifications for everyone globally.

The very best of luck to you and yours there.  I hope your troubles over the assassination are mercifully few and brief.  Good news on some of the captures, is it (I presume??) Is there any indication of a successor yet?  Who's in charge now?

The problem is Zoran Djindjic was one in a million and can hardly be replaced. His deputy has taken over the duty of PM but the things will never be the same.

As for dArGOn, it's no good. I was really embittered after reading his messages, otherwise I wouldn't post there at all. That thread is so... tragic. It's terrible how hopeless the world is.

Understand about daRgON.  I think he's just alienating people terribly and it's painful to watch.  He's obviously extremely bright.  What a waste.

I am so, so sorry you are despairing.  What a terrible thing to have to deal with for all of you, after everything else you have been through.  I don't know if it makes any diff at all, but there are many of us out here who have you in our thoughts much these days.
