luck in HoMM4 maps

am tired of those version threads
I wanna see some opinions about luck in HoMM4 maps
I think in h4 is less than in h3.exept some maps.wich I do
not play
also I donot like to play random town couse of my unluck .I always get worse town .but anyway about maps I play :
superheroes-ring of pyromancer is killing art.but not always .sometimes oponents are so slow that they cant take it in his own side -good map
dog days-practicaly no luck.exept minor art  in box.also some stuff in middle(4lvl dweling,town)-good map
deathvalley- the one wich I would play with random town.deasnt matter town tipe -also good one
round the world - the greatestone that hidden helped to discover me .no luck till u get in neutral zone.that I like most
disagree about maps I wrote or some other ideas about luck>?

I'm not sure if this is related to what you're talking about but I was wondering what people think of non-linked towns. I reckon they add a large element of luck. If the second or third (unlinked) town is the same alignment as your main town (1/6 chance) then you get a big advantage over the other player if they haven't got the same. Maybe it's just the way I play but I never find it useful to try and build up two different alignment armies. You can't combine them, they reduce morale if you use them with your main army and you get a different, possibly useless, magic guild.

I guess people don't think it's such a big problem because lots of maps have random towns, but I don't like them, they give a lucky player too much of an advantage.

Am I wrong?

Yep.

See, I come from this mythic land called Heroes 3 Toh where most people only cared about having fun and unwinding with friends over a game of heroes.  In this land, there were these magical fairies that brought us maps like Hg, Bob, and random Xls.  These maps were often decided by somebody who was lucky enough to get matching castles.  Of course that double build often meant squat if one person had been nicer that year and recieved extra special gifts from the Santa Dragon.  (Five extra archs doesn't mean much when you got the HH, SoJ, and some nice spells.  And even if you did lose, you could laugh with your friends and say: "Damn, you got lucky that game.  Let's rematch and see if it'll happen again."  There is no shame in losing to luck.)

That was then, and this is now.

Getting lucky with matching castles doesn't mean near as much in heroes 4.  It's so much easier to defeat.  One well timed dispel, hypno, cancel, confusion, sanctuary, or wasp swarm can squash the extra troops.  Why?  Because on most maps it's not the creatures that decide the game but rather, the heroes.  (For more info ask Zud about our game on Bob where he defeated my double built Nature towns.)

But what's even worse is ending up on a closed map where all the castles are linked to your starting type and you end up as Nature.  With no chance of getting Dispel/Cancel you had better start praying for the One_Ring.  Without it you won't stand a chance.  Try playing a decent player and walk into the fights without dispel/cancel.  To quote Bobntamr, that's "GM suicude."

Linking castles like you suggest takes out more of the randomness that shapes strategy, influences tactics, and wrecks an important part of what I find fun in the game.  If that's what I want I'd go play Chess.

Psychobabble, you're not wrong if you always pick your alignment.  But for myself, I don't, and I hope I never do.  Where's the fun in always picking every game?  Look at how quickly Flipmo got tired of that.

Joel (as horribly written as usual.)

Edited to fix some typos.

Agreed - picking town type is a burn-out path. So is an overwhelming desire to win. Many a great game were the ones I lost.

desire to win

..gives more fun,indeed..much much more

hands ON the table though!
all games must start as close to 50%-50%,means not try to screw one another on choosing map,settings,town-if not random.

..yet,some of us(we all know who),have that attitude.

heh yeah, try winning on superheroes when one of your opponent's heroes can summon 20 unicorns (or maybe 3 phoenix .. whatever) over and over and over again.
THis is how i lost to mike11, i had barb and chaos for castles, he had barb and nature for castles.

Nobody reads anymore.  Superheroes is not a closed map where all the castles are linked to one alignment.  And even if they were, it's still a map that's really in it's own class.  (Being more akin to a fest map than a regular h4 map, in my opinion.)
