Size of units on the battlefield (differentiate more!)  Posted 3-5-2001 19:55

How can a centaur be the same size as ancient behemoth with 30x hit point difference? Even on all movies titans are pictured as big that they can squash harpies with their feet, and black dragons as big as titans. I think there should be more sizes than 1 hex and 2 hexes. How about up to 3 (horisontal) by 2? Also big units should have more height to them. If a huge 6 pixel unit blocks someone behind (obstructs the view), the outlines of the units behind it would appear visible. By moving cursor to that outline the obstructing unit would become transparent by about 70%.
I think that can work.

But imagine the excitement of building the best unit and seeing it in action: A giant dragon grilling the teeny weeny goblin sausages. Just having huge units on the battlefield would be an experience. They would of course be attacked from more sides, but units such as chaos hydras would look amazing with dozens of heads hurling around this huge lump of flesh... Just imagine the excitement of having huge units!

Do we have supporters??? Please sign and vote

Yes! I want giant units to induce fear, 3x2x3height hexes!
Yes, I want them, but 3x2 hexes will do with no height.
Make them 3 in length and add some height, but no width.
Just make them 3 hexes long, no width, no height.
Nah, 2 hex should be the biggest like in homm3.

I'd ask for this, although I'd appreciate it if the size difference wasn't HUGE. I was thinking that 3-hex critters'd be nice. Much larger than that, though, and you'd start having problems moving around the battlefield. I already use 1-hex chokepoints in my strategies, but if the enemy couldn't move through at all, that'd be really abussive.

A little more realism would be nice, hopefully the new engine can help provide that. I definately think Homm4 could do a little more in the way of cool battlefield affects as well. A little more final fantasy--ish with spell affects and attacks being a little more glamorous. Battle in homm3 is solid but not spectacular.

Use height  Posted 3-6-2001 09:15

I didn't see much utility for the creature size in the HOMM3 game (there was too little space inside the town walls and you could not easily put a giant creature there), but one of the "facts" that has been revealed about HOMM4 is that the battlefield will be far greater, maybe with scroll or zoom options.

This battlefield enhancement leaves us plenty of space to maneuver greater units. They haven't to occupy a lot of hexes. They might take a maximum of three horizontal hexes and four vertical hexes. This "HEIGHT" dimension is very underused in HOMM3, and they can do impressive units using only three real hexes. Imagine a Black Dragon with 3*4 dimensions, standing in backwards of your army and watching the enemies approach like a mighty general, with a praetorian guard of "little" minotaur kings protecting his sides and also getting covered by the flaming breath.

I suppose the problem with height is that the creature standing behind the tall unit remains hidden, but the transparency solution suggested by Valera could be a solution if the selected unit is the one whose "feet" we point on.

It's still funny to imagine those possibilities, but I feel that if 3DO is releasing game screenshots the most of the design work is already fulfilled and this wishes are too late for them to hear.

Regards and good fight:

GREAT idea.  Posted 3-8-2001 12:52

it gives the game more more adventure and your really feeling that you got an strong and fearless army, it would deffently light up the combat scen's i support you valery and the battle field should be more detailed, example you se the wind blowing the leaves of the three's and the gras beneath is moving and you se the sun i shining or and the cloudes are moving if you are attacking at the night you se the fullmoon, or if its raining you se the rain thrumbling down

They have to make Titans look like Titans. Giants obviously should be bigger than imps. Another thought is if certain HUGE creatures could reach over a castle wall...just a thought.

i like the battlefield as it is now.. altho perhaps a little more cooler looking attacks or something, but i would like it to be 3d and to rotateable - i would be able to see from behind my troops or the enemies rather then just from one fixed side angle. this not only looks nice but lets you see tricky angles or when a big creatures blocks your view of something

Why...

I don't get it, why do u make luxury wishes with complex options of 2x2x2 units, and what the hell this height thing anyway?
Don't u get it, 3DO has only 5 month to fullfill (hopefully)our wishes about gameplay and really important and new ideas, so first make sure the basic gameplay wishes will be fullfilled and then worry about graphics and esthetics, after all what is more important, gameplay or looks? Think about it well before replying and eating me alive.

Mystery, wasn't I the one who told you this?
Size is pretty easy to do by the way, no need to draw new artwork, just make it bigger so that it looks as it is powerful

Programming...

I you would know programming, Valeriy, you would understand that it is extremwly hard to make data changes in the battlefield array so that the hexes would be defined for the same unit, and it may even require to change the whole battle engine.

i think as long as you keep it in good ordor

have it be 3 hex sides attached to eachother in a triangle, or 3/3/3 in a triangle, and only let it attack the middle hexes, so its restrictive in its attacks as well,
but alas, i agree that we shouldn't press things like this on them, instead give them like 100 town ideas that they can build on solidly, and reletivly unmentioned ideas (such as the creature morpher thingy) so they aren't rewriting what they already have done, besides, they probably already covered this issue in their development team and may have come up with a new way of mesureing the battle field, or a new way of viewing the creatures, but odds are, from what they have brought us in the past, the future already holds great things

Yup

I think it would be great if those huge creatures would be well huge. I have to admit it seems silly that those centaurs are as big as dragons or others. I think it would be awesome if your Black Dragon could literally step onto those pikemen and really squish them between its toes. Also the rotatable battlefield sounds cool.

Just for the sake of this topic

plese ignore whether it requires any programming or not, we don't know how much and it's not our business or decision. The question is: would you like to have HUGE creatures on the battlefield, not whether it's possible or not
So cast your vote and add your comment, I'm sure many of us agree that when it comes to power, size does matter

Ok.

Ok! Ok! I agree! But please explain me what the hell is that height thing is. Yet there is one thing I dont agree to and its that thing that the dragon will squish the pikemen, that would make him too powerful.

Three dimensional creatures

Hey, don't worry! I'm not talking about 3D-rendered creatures (a rumour denied by Maranthea, a 3DO designer, in a post to the members of The Statesman Quill). I only try to answer the young Mystery poster.

To Mystery --> In the HOMM3 battlefield, all the creatures take one hex WIDTH. The also take one (elves, goblins, and the most of creatures) or two (champions, nagas, chaos hydras, all the dragons...) hexes LENGTH (the dimension running from the left side of the screen to the right one)

What Vareliy is trying to propose is to modify this two dimensions as much as the third one, HEIGHT, the one who tells you how TALL the creature is. Of course some creatures are actually taller than others (A mummie is far taller than a goblin), but this dimension isn't very used. A Dragon taking three hexes length and two hexes width (six squared hexes) will look extremely scary with a three hexes height.

Anyway, making a Titan big enought to step on a harpy is quite exaggerated. A 3*2*3 maximum dimensions seems OK.

Understand...

Now I understand.
But I think the height shouldn't be measure by hexes but by pixels, because width and length take hexes and when they are taken, they can't be occupied by other units, but height doesn't occupy any hexes so it shouldn't be measure by hexes but by pixels.

Also....

Also I think that units like Dragons should be able not only to attack two hexes but to do actual range damage (not like shooters, like the inferno spell), that their breath affects a patch of 5 hexes grouped together, becuase they are giant and they just swipe the whole 5 hex area with their breath, so they could kinda mass destruction units .

Bad breath

Yeh, that could be a half-ranged attack that only half-ranged creatures could retaliate to.

How about making it an option to first move creature and then to make an attack. That would allow for those half-ranged attacks.

Another thought, the largest creature(s) in the game (very hard to get) would squish level 1 creatures by simply stepping onto them. Or have a sqish attack that kills half the stack undepending on size.

neh...

sorry, velriy... nothing personal.. but i don't think the squish attack idea is a good one.

it makes certain creatures (the really big ones who would have this ability) too powerful.

it also takes away the fun and strategic qualities of the game if a unit could just 'squish' another unit.

As we see from screenshots,

this idea has not been considered much, has it?
Behemoth, gold golem, minotaur and mage are all pretty much the same. Only halflings and other extremely little things are any different from the rest. I think the size idea should be considered. (they've heard us at the old HC about halflings it seems )
