World and ignorance...
It started a few days ago... I was doing my cybergeek stuff.. And on a chat thing I started talking with a guy from U.S. We chated about life, philosphy etc. Interesting stuff.. After 20 minutes of talking he asked me about my country.. So I said.. Romania... Then he asks me very simple.. WHERE IS THAT?! NEVER HEARD OF THIS ONE!!! I was becoming a bit mad... But I've explained him.. Then we continued our chat, ending up talking about religion. Soo, he asked what my religion is: Orthodoxism, I said. And very simple he asks me... What kinda of religion is that? It's only in your country or what?! I was like astonished. I've ended my chat, shutdown my computer and went straight into town to talk to my friends about it. They've agreed on this one.
You'll say now, that is a one-case only. IT ISN'T!!! I was looking 2 years ago at a show... DIvertis in U.S. Divertis is an entertainment group, which made a fun show... So they were in U.S. and they started asking people on the street if they've ever heard about Romania. I was disgusted. One lady said something: "Ohhh! Romania.. Of course.. Ceausescu, no?" GOD. Ceausescu died 14 years ago. Also somepeople only heard of Romania in te same phrase with Dracula or Vlad Tepes. Well.. That is sooooooo stupid. First of all... The relation between Dracula and Vlad Tepes was made by an author, that hadn't even visited Romania , but his book had so much succes. Now let me explain something.. I believe Vlad Tepes was one of the heroes of Romania, after Stefan the Great and Mihai the Mighty and a few others. Now almost all of HC will starting cursing me. Ha ha ha.. First of all, if it wasn't for Vlad Tepes, a third part of Romania would have been conquered by the otomans, leaving a gate for Europe to be conquered, but nobody saw that. Also beacuse of Vlad Tepes, theives in that part of the country drastically got low, beacuse all cheaters, theives and smugs were beeing killed in a way that put fear in all the rest. Now.. What was the link beetween Vlad Tepes and Dracula?! None. But almost all americans only heard of Romania in this phrase and they don't even know where is it.
As a final question... What do americans learn at those hours of studying called GEOGRAPHY and HISTORY?!?

Sorry dude.....i had the same way of thinking some years ago.....but then an american friend of me asked me a question:
Where is Oregon located?
I couldn´t answer....i heard it before, but wasn´t able to locate this state in the maps. (it´s only a little bit smaller than romania..)
The USA has 50 states, europe has a similar amount of countries.....and the same way u are not able to tell us ALL 50 states and their specialities, most of the americans are not able to tell us ALL european countries.
Most of the time, the well known countries (like california or texas in usa, or england, france and germany) will be named.
So ask yourself, how much do you know about the states?
Don´t blame others when u can´t stand the knowledge vice versa..

Sorry.. to disppoint you... But I know half of the states in the world(have some problems with middle Asia.. they are so many ending "stan" and some in north africa... Also I'm noy the only guy.. Some students from my class know ALL the states AND their capitals... In Romania, at the geogrphy olympics for the whole country you must know at least the first 10 countries at almost industries.. To be more clear.. At coal for example you have to know the first 10 countries.. Ans those guys aren't going to have a job invoving geography!!! They know it simply for their knowledge..

I totaly agrea with Shai. The ex comunist countries (one of wich i come from too) had much better school system, and generaly people know things.
Beside Europe has many separate countries with centuries of history, while USA is just ONE contry with many states inside it. It would be like someone pretended that people should know all of Italian provinces.......heck, not even Italians know them

You speak to one American and assume we all know nothing? For all you know the guy was 8 years old. Everyone I know in America knows exactly where Romania is. Do you know your North American countries? Where's The Dominican Republic?
I was joking, you don't have to answer.

Heck with you Romanians. You all get pissed off when people assosiate your country with Dracula, and in fact he's the best ambassador your country has ever had (much better than those pesky ambassadors you have around the world that suck on your budget). After Causescu, of course.
On the point of Americans being ignorant, I can say that I had a real trouble explaining to a 16yearold that when he converts dollars to lei (the Romanian national currency) he doesn't become a million times richer. After 15 minutes of explaining, I still wasnt sure if he got it, especially because he was surprised by the fact that actual currencies other than the dollar did exist in Europe.
But not all are like that, of course.
Just one question as brain food though: How come if our Eastern European systems offer the best education, we are so behind in economical terms compared to USA or other Western countries?

Indicators of American ignorance
Quote: Methodology.
(A) One hundred people were randomly interviewed at Times Square on Broadway in New York City on November 19, 2002. (Wallace 11-20-2002)
ii Conclusion.
(A) The Mirror reported, “When the Daily Mirror carried out a poll of 100 people on the streets of New York yesterday, we found that 80 per cent didn't have a clue where Iraq was.” (Wallace 11-20-2002)
iii Excerpts from the Mirror article.
(A) “New York cop John Riley, mounted on his trusty steed Hoss, studied our map for several minutes, saying: ‘I've got to get this right.’ Then, with his finger hovering over northern Europe, he declared: ‘I know it's round here somewhere. Ah yes, there.’ With a firm stab of his finger, he picked Austria as the new Iraq.” (Wallace 11-20-2002)
(B) “A burly construction worker barked: ‘Don't know, don't care, they'll be nothing left of it soon anyway.” (Wallace 11-20-2002)
(C) “There was no messing about from Tracey Shauger, 21, and pal Misty Wright, 20, from Michigan. Five seconds' consideration and a firm "here", as both agreed Iraq was in the Gobi desert. Wrong - that's in Mongolia.” (Wallace 11-20-2002)
(D) “Others placed Iraq in France, Germany, Albania, the Caspian Sea, South Africa and Nicaragua.” (Wallace 11-20-2002)
b Poll conducted by the American Geographical Society.
i Methodology.
(A) 3,250 young adults from nine different countries participated in the survey. Interviews with 2,916 18- to 24-year-olds and 334 25- to 24-year-olds [all from the US] were conducted “using an in-home, in-person methodology.”
(B) “A total of 300 interviews were conducted in each country except the U.S.; in the U.S. nearly 500 interviews were conducted with 18-to 24-year-olds and an additional sample of more than 300 25-to 34-year-olds.”
(C) Interviews were conducted in the United States, Canada, Mexico, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Great Britain, and Japan.
ii Results.
(A) Americans scored third to last when asked to locate the U.S. on a map. 11% of Americans could not find their own country. Mexico scored the highest while Italy and Great Britain took 8th and 9th place respectively. [National Geographic]
(B) When the survey participants were asked to locate Japan and Russia on a map, Americans had the most difficulty. Only 42% could find Japan, and only 62% knew where Russia was.
(C) When the survey participants were asked - “The Taliban and al Qaeda movements were both based in which country?” - Americans had the most difficulty. Only 58% of Americans knew that the correct answer was Afghanistan.
(D) When asked to locate Afghanistan on a map, Americans came in near the bottom, second only to Mexico. Only 17% of Americans knew where Afghanistan was located.
(E) Only 1 in 7 Americans could locate Iraq on a map. (Wallace 11-20-2002)
Some factual info. And keep in mind that if Eastern Europeans would have been interviewed, we would have busted their asses.
I guess PH's assertion and Lews signature do have some significance afterall.

Short Answer
Quote: How come if our Eastern European systems offer the best education, we are so behind in economical terms compared to USA or other Western countries?
The answer is because you pompous Eastern Europeans spend too much time criticizing the USA and other Western countries instead of emulating their economic models. It is called failure to adapt and accept change.

i'm not going to lie to you here, (I'm from Canada) but the first time i ever heard of Romania was here in HC, and I had to look it up on the a map.
does that make me dumb?
also i dont know where the states are, and I dont think its relitive to my life, i only know where about 15-20 states are, there are just to many of them, I know very little about all the countries in europe, dont even knwo how many there are, but I do know where Russia is (where the old USSR) was, I know where Japan is too, not sure how people didnt know that one, its one of the only islands off the coast :S.
what I am trying to say here, is I think im smart, but im don't know everything, and I dont expect anyone too. no-one is perfect.
maybe the American school system needs work, maybe the Canadian one too. who knows maybe even most of the European ones too (but i heard good things about em from teachers and friends who now teach english second language (france and germany to be precice)

Wow, I had no idea we were so educational. Have you looked up Macedonia yet?
btw, doesn't America also apply to Canada?
[I have a friend who lived in Canada for 2 years. And they put her in some special programme for extra gifted kids, cos they thought she was some kind of freaking prodigy. She's really smart alright, but nothing to unusual limits, you know. What I'm trying to say is that I have a theory about the educational systems and the societies, but maybe some other specialized thread would be more appropriate for that. This is bash Americans only. ]

thats like saying isnt Romania the same as afganistan. were completely different countries
The reason our population may seem to ignore you guys (any little country) is because 99% of us will never need to know about you, simple truth. why learn something you dont need to know, if you do ever travel to those parts, you will learn it, or if you plan of doing buisness with their people, then maybe you will learn it.
oh as for the geography thing, our Geo class, was mainly used to teach us about stuff like sedimentary rocks, and (roche ignee) ?ignes rocks in english? and stuff, and how to navigate a map. not so much the contents of the map.
